Pathological gambling and suicidality: an analysis of severity and lethality.

Pathological gambling represents a major public health issue. Risk factors for suicide such as major depression, substance abuse, marital breakdown, unemployment, financial crises, and legal difficulties are commonly found in populations of pathological gamblers. The objective of this study was to systematically investigate the nature of suicidal behavior among treatment-seeking pathological gamblers and its relationship to gambling characteristics and depression. Indices of suicidality were assessed in a sample of 85 treatment-seeking diagnosed pathological gamblers. High rates of suicidal id…

The role of natural recovery in alcoholism and pathological gambling.

While most pathological gamblers, like most alcohol abusers, recover on their own, it seems likely that they are at greater risk for relapse than those who have been through successful treatment. Accordingly, a substantial increase in treatment resources for pathological gamblers, along with greater efforts to establish the effectiveness of these treatments, ought to receive national priority. If the data on alcohol-abusing self-changers are generalizable to self-changing pathological gamblers, the prognosis for gamblers who stop gambling all together is better than for those who aspire to con…

Effectiveness of pharmacotherapy for pathological gambling: a chart review.

Although pathological gambling is a relatively common disorder, there exists only limited information regarding the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy for this illness. This study examines which medications may be effective, dose and duration of medication trials needed to achieve response, and possible predictors of response. Using a chart review, 50 adult outpatients with DSM-IV pathological gambling treated in clinical practice were assessed regarding response to a variety of medications, including augmentation strategies, and response to concomitant psychotherapy. All subjects received pharm…

Prevalence, assessment, and treatment of pathological gambling: a review.

OBJECTIVE: Although pathological gambling is an increasing problem, many mental health providers are unfamiliar with its diagnosis and treatment. To improve recognition and treatment of pathological gambling, the authors reviewed the literature on its prevalence, assessment, and treatment. METHODS: Entries in PsycLIT and MEDLINE were examined for the years 1984 to 1998. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The prevalence of pathological gambling seems to be increasing with the spread of legalized gambling; casinos are now operating in 27 states. Point and lifetime prevalence rates of pathological gamblin…

Prevalence of gambling disorders in a primary care setting.

BACKGROUND: Pathologic gambling prevalence seems to be increasing as opportunities for gambling increase. Prevalence may be different in a primary care setting compared with population-based studies. OBJECTIVES: To determine the gambling disorder prevalence in a primary care setting and to investigate associations between gambling disorders and proximity to a casino, substance abuse, health ratings, age, sex, and socioeconomic status. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey of 1394 patients presenting to their primary care physicians between November 1, 1997, and April 1, 1998. SETTING: Three primar…

Pathological gambling and substance misuse: a review of the literature.

This paper reviews research conducted on the link between pathological gambling and substance misuse. We first examine the phenomenon of "pathological gambling," including similarities between pathological gambling and substance misuse, instruments used to measure pathological gambling, and the prevalence of pathological gambling in the United States and internationally. We then examine research on substance misuse among pathological gamblers, pathological gambling among substance misusers, and the treatment of the pathological gambler-substance misuser. We conclude with a discussion of future…

The prevalence of problem and pathological gambling: A critical analysis.

Prevalence of pathological gambling refers to the percentage of cases of pathological gambling occurring in the community at a given time. Prevalence studies conducted in different principalities throughout the world are reviewed, and it is found that none of them conforms to this definition of prevalence. The major error in all but the most recent surveys conducted is identified as the use of questions which ask whether gambling-related problems have ever occurred rather than whether they are currently occurring. This error will lead to an over-estimation of the prevalence of pathological gam…

[A case of pathologic (F63.0) or dangerous (Z72.6) gambling?].

The authors recapitulate the term of pathological gambling in different classifications incl. the 10th revision of the ICD. It is a new concept which involves certain obscure points also from the linguistic aspect. They demonstrate on a forensic expert opinion elaborated by the Faculty why the statement of the accused that he committed extensive property offenses as a result of pathological gambling was not accepted by experts.

Factors determining the severity of pathological gambling in males.

In extending the implications of our earlier research, we found that a measure of impulsivity developed by Barratt (1965) differentiated recovering, male pathological gamblers (N = 12; mean age = 48.9 years) from male control subjects (N = 15; mean age = 43.3 years). Among the gamblers themselves, however, this measure of impulsivity did not correlate with an index of the social and familial disruption engendered by past gambling. In contrast, a measure of one facet of the gamblers' cognitive style (the TF subscale of the Myers-Briggs Inventory) did correlate with this index of gambling-induce…

Gambling participation and risk over time associated with type of gambling activity: Trends in Australian general population 2015-2022.

There is limited longitudinal data examining national gambling trends in Australia. This study examines longitudinal trends in gambling participation and higher-risk gambling in Australia from 2015 to 2022 using data from the nationally representative Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) panel study. Study participants were HILDA respondents aged 15 and older in 2015, 2018, or 2022 who completed the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI; N = 44,836 observations). Gambling participation was based on self-reported typical monthly expenditure on 10 gambling activities. Gambli…

Addressing gambling harm to affected others: A scoping review (Part I: Prevalence, socio-demographic profiles, gambling profiles, and harm).

Awareness is growing that gambling harm can affect social networks, including family members and friends. This scoping review broadly aimed to examine contemporary research on gambling harm to adult affected others, covering prevalence, socio-demographic profiles, gambling profiles, and harm (Part I); and coping strategies, assessment, and treatment (Part II). A systematic search of electronic databases identified 121 studies published from 2000, 88 of which related to prevalence (9.9 %), socio-demographic profiles (6.6 %), gambling profiles (4.1 %), and harm (71.9 %). Prevalence estimates in …

Regulatory Resistance? Narratives and Uses of Evidence around "Black Market" Provision of Gambling during the British Gambling Act Review.

Commercial gambling is increasingly viewed as being part of the unhealthy commodities industries, in which products contribute to preventable ill-health globally. Britain has one of the world's most liberal gambling markets, meaning that the regulatory changes there have implications for developments elsewhere. A review of the British Gambling Act 2005 is underway. This has generated a range of actions by the industry, including mobilising arguments around the threat of the "black market". We critically explore industry's framing of these issues as part of their strategy to resist regulatory c…

Stressful Life Events Precede Gambling Problems, and Continued Gambling Problems Exacerbate Stressful Life Events; A Life Course Calendar Study.

Do stressful life events cause gambling problems, or do gambling problems cause stressful life events? This study used a retrospective design to examine the temporal order of these associations. Specifically, the study employed a life course calendar in a self-directed online survey to minimise memory biases common in retrospective designs. A total of 1564 US respondents who had gambled at any point in their life (51.0% female, median age 46) were asked whether, for each year of their adult life, they had experienced each of eight stressful life events, and whether they had engaged in casual o…

A Systematic Review of Land-Based Self-Exclusion Programs: Demographics, Gambling Behavior, Gambling Problems, Mental Symptoms, and Mental Health.

Systematic and quantitative reviews on the effects of land-based self-exclusion are scarce. Therefore, the current review aimed to provide a comprehensive summary of (1) the demographic characteristics of land-based self-excluders and changes after exclusion, including (2) gambling behavior, (3) gambling problems, (4) mental symptoms, and (5) mental health. A systematic database and literature search was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Nineteen naturalistic studies met the eligibility criteria. The quality of all included records was rated via adaption of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Res…

The PROblem Gambling RESearch Study (PROGRESS) research protocol: a pragmatic randomised controlled trial of psychological interventions for problem gambling.

INTRODUCTION: International prevalence rates for problem gambling are estimated at 2.3%. Problem gambling is a serious global public health concern due to adverse personal and social consequences. Previous research evaluating the effectiveness of psychological interventions for the treatment of problem gambling has been compromised by methodological limitations, including small sample sizes and the use of waitlist control groups. This article describes the study protocol for a pragmatic randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluating the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), behav…

Differences in gambling problem severity and gambling and health/functioning characteristics among Asian-American and Caucasian high-school students.

Studies of Asian-American adults have found high estimates of problematic gambling. However, little is known about gambling behaviors and associated measures among Asian-American adolescents. This study examined gambling perceptions and behaviors and health/functioning characteristics stratified by problem-gambling severity and Asian-American and Caucasian race using cross-sectional survey data of 121 Asian-American and 1659 Caucasian high-school students. Asian-American and Caucasian adolescents significantly differed on problem-gambling severity, with Asian-American adolescents more often re…

Dopamine release in ventral striatum during Iowa Gambling Task performance is associated with increased excitement levels in pathological gambling.

AIMS: Gambling excitement is believed to be associated with biological measures of pathological gambling. Here, we tested the hypothesis that dopamine release would be associated with increased excitement levels in Pathological Gamblers compared with Healthy Controls. DESIGN: Pathological Gamblers and Healthy Controls were experimentally compared in a non-gambling (baseline) and gambling condition. MEASUREMENTS: We used Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with the tracer raclopride to measure dopamine D 2/3 receptor availability in the ventral striatum during a non-gambling and gambling condi…

Assessing Gambling Disorder Using Semistructured Interviews or Self-Report? Evaluation of the Structured Clinical Interview for Gambling Disorder Among Swedish Gamblers.

The Structured Clinical Interview for Gambling Disorder (SCI-GD) has the potential to bridge a diagnostic clinical gap, but psychometric evaluations have been scarce, in particular in relation to self-reported diagnostic criteria. This study analyzed existing data, including Swedish gamblers (N = 204) from treatment- and help-seeking contexts, self-help groups, and the general population, who were interviewed with the SCI-GD and completed self-report measures. The results indicated that fewer individuals fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for gambling disorder (GD) with the SCI-GD (n = 110, 54%…

Much Ado About Nothing? The Role of Land-Based Gambling Venue Employees in Facilitating Problem Gambling Harm Reduction and Help-Seeking.

Over the past decade, greater emphasis has been placed on the role of the land-based gambling industry to respond to problem gambling behaviour in their venues. Despite this, there is a lack of clear information advising best practice responses by gambling venue employees. This article reviews strategies, practices, and policies employed by land-based gambling venues concerning their employees' role in preventing gambling-related harm and responding to problem gambling behaviours. A systematic search strategy was applied to source peer-reviewed literature which identified 49 articles. The synt…
