FIGIJ Advocacy Statement on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting FGM/C, Endorsed by NASPAG.

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a global problem affecting millions of girls and women. It involves cutting or removing parts o … bjected to FGM/C. FIGIJ and NASPAG strongly oppose the harmful practice of FGM/C as it is a form of gender-based violence and child abuse. FIGIJ and NASPAG call upon governments to ban the practice, and health professionals to develop culturally sensitive patient-centered clinical practice guidelines, and to respectfully cooperate with community leaders in order to co- …

Street Harassment and PTSD Symptoms in Women: Exploring the Indirect Effects of Rumination and Suppression.

Street harassment is a pervasive form of gender-based violence that negatively impacts women's mental health. This study investigates the inter-construct mechanism linking street harassment to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Specifically, it examines a moderated mediation model with rumination as a mediating variable and emotional suppression as a moderator of the relationship between street harassment, rumination, and PTSD. A survey of 433 Indian women revealed that rumination partially mediates the relationship between street harassment and PTSD symptoms. Additionally, emotion…

Exploring access to health and social supports for intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors during stressful life events (SLEs)-A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) often face increased incidents of violence during stressful life events (SLEs) such as economic recessions, environmental disasters, and pandemics. These events can diminish the effectiveness of both formal (e.g., health, social, justice, labor, community) and informal (e.g., friends, family, neighbors) support systems. Additionally, SLEs exacerbate existing health and social inequities, making it necessary to understand the accessibility of support services during these times. This scoping review investigates access to services by indiv

The Mpondombili Project: preventing HIV/AIDS and unintended pregnancy among rural South African school-going adolescents.

Unintended pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections are major threats to the health of South African youth. Gendered social norms make it difficult for young women to negotiate safer sex, and sexual coercion and violence are prevalent. Sexual activity among adolescents is influenced strongly by conservative social norms, which favour abstinence. In reality, most young people are sexually active by the end of the teen years. Girls' decision to have sex is often a passive one, influenced by partners. The Mpondombili Project is a school-based intervention in rural KwaZulu-Natal th

Sexual Assault and HIV Postexposure Prophylaxis at an Urban African Hospital.

Antiretroviral postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) may be underutilized in sexual assault cases in Kenya. This study evaluated the characteristics of survivors of sexual violence attending the Gender-Based Violence Recovery Center (GBVRC) at the Kenyatta National Hospital and reviewed the uptake, adherence, and outcomes of those initiated on PEP. In a retrospective cohort, data from charts of the assaulted seen at the GBVRC from 2009 to 2012 were abstracted. Data were collected describing sociodemographic characteristics, nature of sexual assault, HIV serostatus, and aspects of the PEP care cascade…

Making Abortion Safer in Rwanda: Operationalization of the Penal Code of 2012 to Expand Legal Exemptions and Challenges.

Penal code was revised in Rwanda in 2012 allowing legal termination of pregnancy resulting from rape, incest, forced marriage, or on medical grounds. An evaluation was conducted to assess women's access to abortion services as part of an ongoing program to operationalize the new exemptions for legal abortion. Data was collected from eight district hospitals; seven gender-based violence (GBV) centers and six intermediate courts. Three focus group discussions and 22 in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants. At hospitals, of the 2,644 uterine evacuation records (July 2012-June 2014)…

Measuring mistreatment of women throughout the birthing process: implications for quality of care assessments.

Measuring mistreatment and quality of care during childbirth is important in promoting respectful maternity care. We describe these dimensions throughout the birthing process from admission, delivery and immediate postpartum care. We observed 677 client-provider interactions and conducted 13 facility assessments in Kenya. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression model to illustrate how mistreatment and clinical process of care vary through the birthing process. During admission, the prevalence of verbal abuse was 18%, lack of informed consent 59%, and lack of privacy 67%. Women w

The Current Status of Research on the Integration of Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV Services.

Integration of services for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV has been widely promoted globally in the belief that both clients a … , scaling up, and mainstreaming integration continue to be challenging. Overcoming stigma, reducing gender-based violence, and meeting key populations' SRH needs are critical. Health systems research using SRH as the entry point for integrated services and interaction with communities and clients is needed to realize universal health coverage.

An Examination of Exposure to Traumatic Events and Symptoms and Strengths for Children Served in a Behavioral Health System of Care.

The present study examined how exposure to traumatic events impacts children with severe emotional disturbance who are being served in a school-based system of care. Multilevel growth curve models were used to examine the relationships between a child's history of traumatic events (physical abuse, sexual abuse, or domestic violence) and behavioral and emotional strengths, internalizing problem behaviors, or externalizing problem behaviors over 18 months. Results indicate that children receiving services (N = 134) exhibited increased emotional and behavioral strengths and decreased internalizin

Intoxication, criminal offences and suicide attempts in a group of South African problem drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Incidence rates of crime and alcohol abuse in South Africa are unacceptably high. Research suggests a relationship between alcohol and both crime and suicide. This study aims to add to the information base on this topic in South Africa. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional record study of criminal offences and suicide attempts in 269 admissions to an alcohol rehabilitation unit in the Western Cape. Types of criminal offences and suicide attempts are described. Relationships are sought between crime, violent crime and suicide attempts on the one hand, and demographic and alcohol-rela

Characteristics and Mental Health Correlates of Nonconsensual Condom Removal Among Undergraduate Students.

Nonconsensual condom removal (NCCR), the removal of a condom during sexual activity without consent, is a common yet underrecognized form of sexual violence that occurs within broader systems of power, identity, and structural inequity. Although prior research links NCCR victimization to emotional distress, research examining identity-based disparities and a broader range of mental health correlates is needed. Among a sample of sexually active college students (N = 977), we investigated the prevalence of NCCR victimization and its association with gender and minoritized racial/ethnic and sexua

Targeting the SAVA (Substance Abuse, Violence, and AIDS) Syndemic Among Women and Girls: A Global Review of Epidemiology and Integrated Interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple pathways link gender-based violence (GBV) to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among women and girls who use or inject drugs. The aim of this article is to synthesize global literature that examines associations among the synergistic epidemics of substance abuse, violence, and HIV/AIDS, known as the SAVA syndemic. It also aims to identify a continuum of multilevel integrated interventions that target key SAVA syndemic mechanisms. METHODS: We conducted a selective search strategy, prioritizing use of meta-analytic epidemiological and intervention studies that a…

Disrespect and abuse in maternity care: individual consequences of structural violence.

Disrespect and abuse of patients, especially birthing women, does occur in the health sector. This is a violation of women's fundamental human rights and can be viewed as a consequence of women's lives not being valued by larger social, economic and political structures. Here we demonstrate how such disrespect and abuse is enacted at an interpersonal level across the continuum of care in Tanzania. We describe how and why women's exposure to disrespect and abuse should be seen as a symptom of structural violence. Detailed narratives were developed based on interviews and observations of 14 rura
