BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB) is an important nosocomial pathogen which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in high-risk populations. Aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes (AMEs) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) methylation are two important mechanisms of resistance to aminoglycosides. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of 16S rRNA methylase (armA, rmtA, rmtB, rmtC, and rmtD), and the AME genes [aac(6')-Ib, aac(3)-I, ant(3'')-I, aph(3')-I and aac(6')-Id], among clinical isolates of A. baumannii in Teh

Staphylococcus spp. is a major nosocomial pathogen, particularly affecting immunocompromised patients and infants. It is associated with bacteremia, endocarditis, and co-infections. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococci (MRS) carry the mecA gene, encoding PBP2a, which confers resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. The aim of this study is to investigate resistance profiles and develop a molecular method to identify nosocomial Staphylococcus spp. strains. A total of 64 strains from public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro were analyzed using phenotypic and molecular methods, with 17 classified as MDR.

Increasing resistance to antifungal therapy is an impediment to the effective treatment of fungal infections. Candida glabrata is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen that is inherently less susceptible to cost-effective azole antifungals. Gain-of-function mutations in the Zn-finger pleiotropic drug resistance transcriptional activator-encoding gene CgPDR1 are the most prevalent causes of azole resistance in clinical settings. CgPDR1 is also transcriptionally activated upon azole exposure; however, factors governing CgPDR1 gene expression are not yet fully understood. Here, we have uncovered

Tuberculosis (TB) has become a curable disease, thanks to the discovery of antibiotics. However, it has remained one of the most difficult infections to treat. Most current TB regimens consist of 6-9 months of daily doses of four drugs that are highly toxic to patients. The purpose of these lengthy treatments is to completely eradicate Mycobacterium tuberculosis, notorious for its ability to resist most antibacterial agents, thereby preventing the formation of drug resistant mutants. On the contrary, the prolonged therapies have led to poor patient adherence. This, together with a severe limit

Although most of the approximately 94 million annual human cases of gastroenteritis due to Salmonella enterica resolve without medical intervention, antimicrobial therapy is recommended for patients with severe disease. Wild birds can be natural hosts of Salmonella that pose a threat to human health; however, multiple-drug-resistant serovars of S. enterica have rarely been described. In 2012, silver gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) chicks at a major breeding colony were shown to host Salmonella, most isolates of which were susceptible to antibiotics. However, multiple-drug-resistant (MDR

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolones (FQs) are a cornerstone of modern multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment, particularly within the WHO-recommended all-oral BPaLM regimen. The emergence of FQ-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) poses a critical threat to these life-saving therapies. While the global proportion of FQ resistance among MDR/RR-TB cases is estimated at 19%, phenotypic and molecular data from low-incidence countries in Central and Eastern Europe remain limited. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the FQ resistance profile of MDR/RR-TB strains isolated in Poland

Fowl typhoid (FT), which is caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (S. Gallinarum), leads to high morbidity and acute or subacute mortality in chickens of all ages. Although a live S. Gallinarum 9R vaccine was introduced in 2001 for commercial layer chickens in Korea, until recently, a variety of antimicrobials were widely used to prevent or treat FT. In this study, we investigated antimicrobial resistance in S. Gallinarum strains isolated from 2014 to 2018 and characterized the multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains to better understand the resistance trends in recent isolates. A total o

The rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica presents a critical global health concern and highlights the need for new antibacterial agents. This study investigates the activity of the hexahydroacridine derivatives D01 and D04 using a comprehensive set of in vitro, in vivo, and in silico approaches. Both compounds exhibited strong bactericidal effects against MDR S. enterica, with D04 showing superior potency, achieving a ≥6 log10 reduction in CFU/mL within 24 h at 2 × MIC. D04 also reduced biofilm formation by 95% at 2 × MIC. Synergistic interactions with ciprofloxacin and tetrac

Escherichia coli is a significant pathogen associated with foodborne outbreaks. This study investigated the presence of diarrheagenic, antimicrobial-resistant, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli in free-range poultry products in a tropical region. MALDI-TOF/VITEK® 2 system and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) assays were used to detect E. coli, phenotypical antimicrobial resistance profile, virulence, and β-lactam genes. Escherichia coli was identified in 92.3% of poultry meat samples (24/26) and 15.8% of egg samples (6/38 pools). Of these isolates, 60% (18/30) were c

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Among current treatment strategies, chemotherapy continues to play a central role; however, its therapeutic efficacy is markedly compromised by the development of multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer cells. To address this challenge, a new triblock copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactide)-b-poly(cationic polylactide) (PEG-b-PLA-b-CPLA), was first synthesized and converted into biodegradable charged nanocapsules (BCNCs) without the use of surfactants or additives via our developed nanoemulsion interfacial cross-linking tec
