Pregnancy induces a dynamic reconfiguration of the vaginal microbiome, typically marked by increased dominance of Lactobacillus species and reduced microbial diversity. Among these bacteria, Lactobacillus iners stands out for its unique genomic traits, controversial associations with vaginal health, and frequent presence across all stages of gestation. This review synthesizes current literature on the maternal microbiome with a focus on L. iners, exploring its strain-level diversity, metabolic idiosyncrasies, and inflammatory potential. We discuss how host factors such as ethnicity, sexual act

The female reproductive tract (FRT), particularly the vagina, has traditionally been regarded as a sterile environment. However, it is now recognized that the vagina is a complex, dynamic ecosystem dominated by Lactobacillus species, which maintain internal homeostasis through acid production, competitive exclusion, and immune regulation. Microbial dysbiosis, characterized by a loss of Lactobacillus dominance, increased microbial diversity and overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria, triggers chronic low-grade inflammation by disrupting physical barriers, activating pattern recognition receptors (PR

Alcohol-associated diseases are linked to gut microbiota disruption, but how ethanol intake is associated with microbial functional remodeling remains unclear. Here, using male C57BL/6J mice, we integrated spatiotemporal quantification of ethanol and acetaldehyde across the gastrointestinal tract with 16S rRNA sequencing, metagenomics, metaproteomics, and metabolomics. Our results showed that small-intestinal communities were enriched in taxa and functions related to bile acid tolerance/utilization, whereas cecal communities exhibited pronounced remodeling of multiple core functions associated

The expression "lung-gut-liver axis" refers to the interconnected processes occurring in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and liver, particularly in relation to immune function, microbial regulation, and metabolic responses. Over the past decade, growing concern has emerged regarding the detrimental impact of air pollution on liver disease. Air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) and chemical gases such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), can influence the microbiome in the lungs and gut by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induce oxidative stress and local inflammation. This r

The gut microbiota has been implicated in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but whether these associations reflect causal relationships remains unclear. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the potential causal effects of gut microbial taxa on RA risk. Summary-level data from the MiBioGen consortium (n = 13,266) and a large RA genome-wide association study (n = 97,173) were used. Multiple Mendelian randomization methods and sensitivity analyses were applied to ensure robustness. Four microbial taxa showed nominal associations with RA. Increased

New solutions are needed to detect genotype-phenotype associations involved in microbial drug resistance. Herein, we describe a Group Association Model (GAM) that accurately identifies genetic variants linked to drug resistance and mitigates false-positive cross-resistance artifacts without prior knowledge. GAM analysis of 7,179 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) isolates identifies gene targets for all analyzed drugs, revealing comparable performance but fewer cross-resistance artifacts than World Health Organization (WHO) mutation catalogue approach, which requires expert rules and precedents.

Most in vitro models lack the capacity to fully probe bacterial phenotypes emerging from the complex interactions observed in real-life environments. This is particularly true in the context of hard-to-treat, chronic, and polymicrobial biofilm-based infections detected in the airways of individuals living with cystic fibrosis (CF), a multiorgan genetic disease. While multiple microbiome studies have defined the microbial compositions detected in the airway of people with CF (pwCF), no in vitro models thus far have fully integrated critical CF-relevant lung features. Therefore, a significant kn

Owing to its flavoring, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic nature, vanillin is widely used in foods, beverages, perfumes and pharmaceutical products. Ferulic acid (FA) is an important precursor of vanillin which is abundant in cereals like maize, rice and wheat and sugar beet. A major drawback of microbial vanillin production from FA is the degradation and biotransformation of toxic vanillin to other phenolic derivatives. The present study is undertaken to explore microbial vanillin production from FA precursor rice bran by employing vanillin-resistant Pediococcus acidilactici BD1

Autoimmune liver diseases include autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), and primary sclerosing cholangitis. A variety of environmental and genetic risk factors have been associated with these conditions. Recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI) have been strongly associated with PBC, and to a lesser extent with AIH. These observations were initially based on the observation of significant bacteriuria in female patients with PBC. Larger epidemiological studies demonstrated that there was indeed a strong correlation between recurrent UTI and PBC. AIH has not been linked t

Psoriasis is a multifactorial immune skin disease whose etiology involves a strong genetic component, involving several genes encoding proteins involved in epidermal differentiation and immune, inflammatory and pathogen responses, in combination with microbial environmental factors. Although various microorganisms appear to provoke or aggravate the disease, including Staphylococcus aureus, Malassezia and Candida albicans, the association between S. pyogenes throat infections and guttate psoriasis is supported by the strongest clinical evidence. Furthermore, the identification of peptidoglycan-

BACKGROUND: Understanding the origin and structure of microbiomes and their associations with ecologically significant host traits is essential for understanding the evolution of host-microbe interactions. These interactions support a wide range of physiological processes important for development, survival, and reproduction. Syngnathid fishes (seahorses, pipefish, and seadragons) represent a compelling system for investigating host-microbiome interactions due to their unique evolution of male pregnancy. Males harbor a fitness-critical brood pouch that provides embryos with protection, osmoreg

OBJECTIVES: The continued emergence of Campylobacter jejuni strains resistant to fluoroquinolones (FQs) has posed a significant threat to global public health, leading frequently to undesirable outcomes of human campylobacteriosis treatment. The molecular genetic mechanisms contributing to the increased retention of resistance to FQs in natural populations of this species, especially in antibiotic-free environments, are not clearly understood. This study aimed to determine whether genetic recombination could be such a mechanism.
METHODS: We applied a large array of algorithms, imbedded in the

Human listeriosis outbreaks are often associated with consumption of contaminated food, especially meat products. To better understand meat contamination of L. monocytogenes, whole genome sequencing(WGS) was performed on all detected isolates to investigate genetic relationships between retail markets and slaughterhouses. 110 and 13 isolates were isolated from 1914 food samples and 67 food and environmental samples, respectively. IIa (51/123,41.5%) and IIc (7/123,5.7%) were detected as the dominant serogroups of 123 L. monocytogenes isolates. Most isolates were penicillin-resistant (22/123,17.9

d-Fucose, a nonmetabolizable analogue of l-arabinose, prevents growth of Escherichia coli B/r on a mineral salts medium plus l-arabinose by inhibiting induction of the l-arabinose operon. Mutations giving rise to d-fucose resistance map in gene araC and result in constitutive expression of the l-arabinose operon. Most of these mutations also permit d-fucose to serve as a gratuitous inducer. It is concluded that d-fucose-resistant mutants produce an araC gene product with an altered inducer specificity. Addition of l-arabinose to cells induced with the gratuitous inducer, d-fucose, resulted in

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host, with respect to metabolism, immune function, and nutrition. Any perturbation of these beneficial microbes leads to gut dysbiosis, which triggers the development of various disorders in the gastrointestinal system. Probiotics play a key role in resolving the dysbiosis posed by external factors such as antibiotics, other substances, or interventions. Supplementing probiotics with antibiotics is favorable in reducing the harmful effects of antibiotics on gut flora. These microbes a

Babesia parasites infect a diverse range of vertebrate hosts, from penguins to pigs. Recently, the emergence of zoonotic Babesia infection has been increasing, and the list of species reported to infect humans continues to grow. Babesiosis represents a burgeoning veterinary and medical threat, and the need for novel therapeutic drugs to effectively target this diverse group of parasites is pressing. Here, we review the current culture systems that exist to study and manipulate Babesia parasites, and identify the scope and methods for target discovery and validation to identify novel, potent an

Background: Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease with a complex interplay between microbial, environmental, and host-related factors. Among host factors, genetic susceptibility plays a significant role in influencing both disease onset and progression. Over the past two decades, a wide range of genetic tests, ranging from single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis to genome-wide association studies (GWAS), have been explored to assess individual risk profiles and potential treatment responses. However, despite initial enthusiasm, the clinical integration of genetic testing
