Mental-health service utilization among elderly people has been shown to be low relative to younger age groups. This study was done to determine the current proportion of elderly persons served in a university-affiliated psychiatry outpatient clinic, and to better characterize elderly patients who receive specialized mental-health care in this setting. The aim of this study was to examine the procedures of the caregivers in their daily work with meals in geriatric care, emphasizing ritualized practices, praxis and norms. An ethnographic approach was used. Registered nurses, enrolled nurses and nurse's assistants observed in the study responded to a questionnaire and, finally, were interviewed. We describe a geriatric patient with acute substernal chest pain thought to be due to coronary heart disease, who was subsequently found to have Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia associated with infection of the thymus and manubriosternal joint. Old people are commonly receiving diuretics on admission to hospital. Diuretics are recognized as a risk factor for electrolyte disturbances; controversy exists about the relative risks of different combinations (in particular, co-amilozide [Moduretic]). Aerobic gram-negative bacillus (AGNB) groin skin carriage was prospectively studied in ambulatory geriatric outpatients: 42 from three nursing homes and 44 from private homes. This study was based upon deceased patients in a geriatric university hospital with a high autopsy rate (81%). Of 6200 autopsied patients, 333 (5.4%) had had an active peptic ulcer; agonal and other acute erosions were not included. 257 cases were selected for the study (average age 83.8 yr).
