Activation of the right inferior frontal cortex during assessment of facial emotion.

We measured regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using positron emission tomography (PET) to determine which brain regions are involved in the assessment of facial emotion. We asked right-handed normal subjects to assess the signalers' emotional state based on facial gestures and to assess the facial attractiveness, as well as to discriminate the background color of the facial stimuli, and compared the activity produced by each condition. The right inferior frontal cortex showed significant activation during the assessment of facial emotion in comparison with the other two tests. The activated …

Electropalatography in the treatment of articulation/phonological disorders.

Treatment using electropalatography (EPG) is described. Speech learners wear a custom-made appliance called a pseudopalate in order to view … ation, using electropalatography, showed that the children benefited from learning new articulatory gestures rather than learning to correct isolated errors. Studies with phonologically-impaired children have shown that perceptually neutralized (or non-contrasted) sounds may actually be produced with consistent articulatory contrasts. This knowledge could …

Transient mutism following posterior fossa surgery in children.

We report 3 patients, ages 5, 9 and 13 years, with mutism following posterior fossa surgery (PFS). All presented with headache of 10-180 days duration, excellent premorbid learning performance and paucity of neurologic signs. Radiographic studies demonstrated large posterior fossa tumor occupying the fourth ventricle, and hydrocephalus, leading to gross total resection of the tumor. Within 24-48 hr, all patients were mute. None had problems with swallowing and coughing. All were able to nod "yes or no," follow commands, point to body parts, and make their wants known by gestures. Jaw, gag, sno…

Ideomotor apraxia in Huntington's disease.

The pattern of movement errors in ideomotor apraxia suggests an abnormality in selection and sequencing of component movements. Individuals … associated with errors in imitation of nonsymbolic movements but not with errors in recognition of gestures. It correlated significantly with duration of disease and with progressive abnormalities of posture but not with other individual aspects of elementary motor or cognitive function. These associations indicate that apraxia in Huntington's disease may …

[Visual and tactile agnosia].

A patient presented with visual and tactile agnosia due to a spontaneous left occipito-temporal hematoma. Major memory and spatial orientation disorders were also noted, but language, gestures, auditory and olfactory perception, and interior visual imagerie were unaffected. A review of the literature since 1970 found 6 cases of an association of this type among 17 patients with visual agnosia. There appears to be no relationship between the presence of tactile agnosia and the global or partial character of the visual agnosia, the severity of memory disturbances, the presence of visuoverbal dis…

The neural time course of self-oriented pointing and labeling in visual processing.

Pointing and labeling are traditionally seen as communicative behaviors; the present study examines their neurocognitive consequences when produced for oneself. Twenty-four participants completed a priming task in which they encoded a color prime in three within-subjects conditions: point, label, and point & label. Following each prime, participants judged whether a target object belonged to the same (congruent) or different (incongruent) color category. Target-locked ERPs showed effects of congruence and encoding conditions spanning early and later processing stages. At early latencies, point

Developmental Shift in Multimodal Cue Usage in Early Mother-Child Conversational Initiation.

Early mother-child conversational initiation is increasingly understood as a developmentally dynamic, embodied, and socially embedded process in which caregivers and children coordinate multimodal cues, including gaze, gesture, touch, and speech, to establish joint attention and meaning. Drawing on an existing audio-visual corpus of Korean mother-child interactions from 35 dyads aged 8-27 months, sampled across stages of language and motor development, we examine how nonverbal cues preceding verbal conversational onset vary with child age, sex, and speaker role. Results show that initiatory mu

Universal Constraints on Linguistic Event Categories: A Cross-Cultural Study of Child Homesign.

Languages carve up conceptual space in varying ways-for example, English uses the verb cut both for cutting with a knife and for cutting with scissors, but other languages use distinct verbs for these events. We asked whether, despite this variability, there are universal constraints on how languages categorize events involving tools (e.g., knife-cutting). We analyzed descriptions of tool events from two groups: (a) 43 hearing adult speakers of English, Spanish, and Chinese and (b) 10 deaf child homesigners ages 3 to 11 (each of whom has created a gestural language without input from a convent

Defective imitation of finger configurations in patients with damage in the right or left hemispheres: An integration disorder of visual and somatosensory information?

To explore the mechanism underlying the imitation of finger gestures, we devised a simple imitation task in which the patients were instructed to replicate finger configurations in two conditions: one in which they could see their hand (visual feedback: VF) and one in which they could not see their hand (non-visual feedback: NVF). Patients with left brain damage (LBD) or right brain damage (RBD), respectively, were categorized into two groups based on their scores on the imitation task in the NVF condition: the impaired imitation groups (I-LBD and I-RBD) who failed two or more of the five patt…

Contextual bottom-up and implicit top-down modulation of anarchic hand syndrome: A single-case report and a review of the literature.

Anarchic hand syndrome (AHS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by seemingly purposeful, goal-directed hand movements which the person afflicted by the syndrome is not, however, in control of. By extensively examining a patient with AHS we provide novel neuropsychological and lesion mapping data that shed new light on the possibility of modulating specific symptoms associated with AHS, in particular unilateral apraxia and magnetic apraxia. Moreover, we compared lesion mapping data with an in depth analysis of previous studies in order to explore the neural network responsible for t

Neonatal Mimicry of Caregivers at Home: Feasibility of an Asynchronous Online Paradigm.

While early life sets the stage for later learning, comparatively less is known about newborns' cognition than that of older infants. A striking example is the lack of consensus regarding the extent to which newborns spontaneously mimic gestures, and whether such behavior drives bonding and learning. Despite the theoretical importance of these questions, practical challenges limit researchers' ability to engage newborns in behavioral research. Webcam-based, asynchronous online studies have expanded developmental science's capacity to reach older infants. However, such scalable and replicable m…

Preserving the eponym: Klinkenbergh technique for bronchial stump suturing.

The technique for bronchial stump suturing following lung resection which is currently applied in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium owes its name to the Dutch surgeon Dr. Klinkenbergh (1891-1985). A true pioneer of cardiothoracic surgery in Europe, Dr. Klinkenbergh dedicated himself to the surgical treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. His work was praised by his peers for his precision and the reasoning behind every gesture. The Klinkenbergh technique consists in performing two running sutures which cross each other 'in the same manner as the laces

Sign Language in Light of Mathematics Education: An Exploration Within Semiotic and Embodiment Theories of Learning Mathematics.

Research rarely focuses on how deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students address mathematical ideas. Complexities involved in using sign language (SL) in mathematics classrooms include not just challenges, but opportunities that accompany mathematics learning in this gestural-somatic medium. The authors consider DHH students primarily as learners of mathematics, and their SL use as a special case of language in the mathematics classroom. More specifically, using SL in teaching and learning mathematics is explored within semiotic and embodiment perspectives to gain a better understanding of how u

Behavioural biomarkers of typical Rett syndrome: moving towards early identification.

The dynamic course of Rett syndrome (RTT) is still said to begin with a period of apparently normal development although there is mounting evidence that individuals with RTT show behavioural peculiarities and abnormalities during their infancy. Their spontaneous general movements are abnormal from birth onwards. Normal cooing vocalisation and canonical babbling (if at all required) are interspersed with abnormalities such as proto-vowel and proto-consonant alternations produced on ingressive airstream, breathy voice characteristics, and pressed or high-pitched vocalisations. The gestural reper

A Case Study of Visual Agnosia without Perceptual Processing or Structural Descriptions Impairment.

We report a new case of visual associative agnosia. Our patient (DJ) was impaired in several tasks assessing visual processing of real objects, colour pictures, and line drawings. The deficit was present both with naming and gesturing responses. Object processing in other modalities (verbal, auditory nonverbal, and tactile) was intact. Semantic processing was impaired in the visual but not in the verbal modality. Picture-word matching was better than single picture identification. DJ's visual perceptual processing, was intact in several tasks such as visual attributes discrimination, shape dis

Phonetic and phonological aspects of English affricate production in children with speech disorders.

In this paper we consider phonetic and phonological aspects of the English voiceless affricate /t integral of/ as it is realised by children with developmental speech disorders. The speakers described in the study have normal /t/ but disordered /integral of/ and /t integral of/. Using electropalatography (Reading EPG), we compare the stop and fricative phases of /t integral of/ to independent /t/ and /integral of/. This comparison shows that the place of articulation of /t integral of/ can be predicted from that of independent /integral of/. There is a strict requirement for the affricate's st

Acquired aprosodia in children.

In adults, the affective components of language, including certain aspects of prosody and gesturing, appear to be a dominant function of the right hemisphere. The various combinations of affective processing deficits associated with focal right brain damage are called aprosodias and have functional and anatomical correlates similar to the propositional language deficits associated with aphasias secondary to focal left brain damage. Developmental affective-prosodic deficits have been reported recently in children with congenital or very early right hemisphere injury. We now report two school-ag

Liquid Metal-Based Flexible and Wearable Sensor for Functional Human-Machine Interface.

Rigid sensors are a mature type of sensor, but their poor deformation and flexibility limit their application range. The appearance and development of flexible sensors provide an opportunity to solve this problem. In this paper, a resistive flexible sensor utilizes gallium-based liquid metal (eutectic gallium indium alloy, EGaIn) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and is fabricated using an injecting thin-line patterning technique based on soft lithography. Combining the scalable fabrication process and unique wire-shaped liquid metal design enables sensitive multifunctional measurement under s
