Extensive gingival myiasis - Diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Myiasis is a rare disease primarily caused by infestation of tissue by larvae of houseflies. Oral myiasis is still more "rare" and "unique" owing to the fact that oral cavity rarely provides the necessary habitat conducive for a larval lifecycle. Here we report a case of extensive gingival myiasis, in an 81-year-old female patient, diagnosed and treated successfully in our department. The case is discussed in relation to its clinical presentation, etiopathogenesis, management, and prognosis.

Current concepts on gingival fibromatosis-related syndromes.

Gingival fibromatosis is a rare, benign, slowly-growing fibrous overgrowth of the gingiva, with great genetic and clinical heterogeneity. Gingival fibromatosis/overgrowth can be inherited as an isolated trait (hereditary gingival fibromatosis) and/or as a component of a syndrome, or it can be drug induced. As a clinical manifestation of a syndrome, gingival fibromatosis is usually associated with generalized hypertrichosis, mental retardation, or epilepsy. Gingival fibromatosis and its related syndromes are mainly inherited in an autosomal-dominant manner, but autosomal-recessive inheritance h

Proinflammatory effects of muramyldipeptide on human gingival fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Because human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) are the predominant cells in periodontal tissues, we hypothesized that HGFs are contributed to receptors for components of bacteria. In this study, we focused on expression and function of nucleotide binding oligomerization domain 2 (NOD2) in HGFs, which is a mammalian cytosolic pathogen recognition molecule. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Expression of NOD2 in HGFs was examined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and flow cytometry. Production of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, cc chemokine ligand2, cxc chemokine li

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm characterized by variable clinical manifestations. When located in the gingiva, this neoplasm may mimic common inflammatory lesions. The aim of this study was to report a case of atypical squamous cell carcinoma, in which the patient had no risk factors for the development of this neoplasm. METHODS: A 61 year old Caucasian female was seen with a 3 month history of a rapidly growing, painful nodule in the gingiva adjacent to tooth #11. Clinical examination revealed a proliferative lesion in the vestibular marginal gingiva o

Orthodontic therapy and gingival recession: a systematic review.

To perform a systematic review on the effect of changes in incisor inclination owing to orthodontic treatment and the occurrence of gingival recession. PubMed, EMBASE Excerpta Medica and CENTRAL of the Cochrane Library were searched and a hand search was performed. From 1925 articles identified, 17 articles were finally included: six experimental animal studies and 11 retrospective clinical studies in humans. More proclined teeth compared with less proclined teeth or untreated teeth had in most studies a higher occurrence or severity of gingival recession. Contradictory results were found rega

Focal palmoplantar and gingival hyperkeratosis: a case report.

UNLABELLED: We report a rare genetic condition characterized by gingival hyperkeratosis with skin changes affecting the hands and feet. The patient presented with asymptomatic oral lesions and the diagnosis was reached by taking a full clinical history and biopsy tests. Palmoplantar keratosis can be a feature of a range of different syndromes and can be associated with periodontal destruction, benign oral keratosis or cancer of the oesophagus. It is important for dentists to be aware that clues to diagnosis can be gained from examination of the hands and feet, in addition to an oral examinatio

Gingival metastasis of a bronchogenic adenocarcinoma: report of a case.

We report the case of a 64-year-old patient suffering from a multiple metastatic bronchial adenocarcinoma, referred to our department for a gingival tumefaction. The diagnostic assumptions considered were those of a pyogenic granuloma, of a primary gingival carcinoma, or of a metastasis of the bronchial tumor. An excisional biopsy was carried out and the histopathologic examination confirmed the latter diagnosis. No complementary care was performed because of the multiple localizations and unfavorable prognosis. If metastases of pulmonary cancers represent the majority of gingival metastases,

Gingival neurofibroma in a neurofibromatosis type 1 patient.

Neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumour. It is one of the most frequent tumours of neural origin and its presence is one of the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF-I). Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominantly inherited disease due to an alteration in the long arm of chromosome 17. About 50% of NF-I patients have no family history of the disease. NF-I patients have skin lesions (cafe au lait spots and neurofibromas) as well as bone malformations and central nervous system tumours. Diagnosis is based on a series of clinical criteria. Gin

Primary tuberculous gingival enlargement: a rare entity.

With the advent of effective drug therapy, tuberculous lesions of the oral cavity have become so rare that they are frequently forgotten. Primary gingival tuberculosis is extremely rare and usually manifests as ulcer. We report the first case of primary tuberculosis manifesting as gingival enlargement, which was the only presenting sign of tuberculosis. Diagnosis was based on histopathology (hematoxin and eosin staining), complete blood count, polymerase chain reaction assay and immunologic investigation with the detection of antibodies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The possibility of gi

Verapamil induced gingival enlargement in cluster headache.

Verapamil is an effective prophylactic treatment for cluster headaches and, therefore, is widely used. This report describes four patients with cluster headache who developed gingival enlargement after initiating treatment with verapamil. In two patients, it was possible to control this side effect adequately by optimising oral hygiene and dental plaque control. In the other two patients, lowering of the verapamil dose, in addition to optimal oral hygiene and dental plaque control, was necessary; in one patient verapamil had to be stopped completely to reverse the gingival enlargement. Clubbed fingers in a patient with inflammatory gingival hyperplasia.

The association of clubbing with miscellaneous diseases and its diagnostic implications are such that its detection should prompt consideration of the underlying etiology. We encountered a 48-year-old woman with clubbed fingers and a cauliflower-like gingival swelling on the hard palate of the upper jaw. There were no conventionally well-known causes for clubbing. Histological examination of gum biopsy specimen revealed a diagnosis of inflammatory gingival hyperplasia. As an etiology of clubbed fingers, gingivitis was suggested, since clubbing was regressed in parallel with remission of the gi…

Gingival recession: prevalence, extension and severity in adults.

The gingival recession was assessed in 380 adult individuals aged more than 20 years and comprised both subjects being treated and looking for treatment at Bauru Dental School. Clinical evaluation was conducted by a single examiner in all teeth and involved analysis of four dental aspects (mesial, buccal, distal and lingual). The gingival recession was regarded as present whenever more than 1mm of root surface was exposed, and its vertical width was measured in millimeters from the cementoenamel junction to the gingival margin. The recessions were further scored following the criteria suggeste

Viral etiology of gingival recession. A case report.

Herpes simplex virus-type I (HSV-1) is responsible for both primary and recurrent infections of the oral mucosa. The aim of this case report is to show how HSV-1 may cause periodontal damage such as gingival recession. A 26-year-old male patient presented in a private office for the treatment of gingival recessions. He reported that the recessions had appeared suddenly with marginal inflammation of the gingiva and vesicle formation; within a few hours, the gingival tissue had been completely destroyed. The lesions were accompanied by pain, fever, and regional lymphadenopathy. Two weeks later,
