Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, motile, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium that is widely distributed environmentally. While B. cereus is associated mainly with food poisoning, it is being increasingly reported to be a cause of serious and potentially fatal non-gastrointestinal-tract infections. The pathogenicity of B. cereus, whether intestinal or nonintestinal, is intimately associated with the production of tissue-destructive exoenzymes. Among these secreted toxins are four hemolysins, three distinct phospholipases, an emesis-inducing toxin, and prote

In 2005, in order to investigate the occurrence of Helicobacter pullorum in poultry, the caecal contents collected from a total of 60 animals intensively reared in Italy on 15 different farms (9 farms of broiler chicken and 6 of laying hens) were examined at the slaughterhouse. A modified Steele-McDermott membrane filter method was used. Small, greyish-white colonies of Gram-negative, gently curved, slender rod bacteria were preliminarily identified as H. pullorum by a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay based on 16S rRNA and were then subjected to an ApaLI digestion assay to distinguish H.

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, a gram-negative rod of the Pasteurellaceae family, causes pleuropneumonia in pigs. Establishing A. pleuropneumoniae free herds is difficult due to the occurrence of persistently infected animals. The ApxIV toxin is expressed by A. pleuropneumoniae in vivo and an ELISA based on the toxin is used to detect infection and to differentiate between infected and vaccinated animals. In this study, we have identified a 1070bp insertion element of the IS30 family, designated ISApl1, in the A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 7 strain AP76. ISApl1 contains a 924bp ORF encoding a

Melioidosis, a severe, often fatal disease caused by infection with Pseudomonas pseudomallei, has been thought to be a rare endemic disease relatively limited to the areas 20 degrees on either side of the equator. However, an increasing number of people travelling to these areas are reportedly suffering from this disease. It is timely to review this disease for doctors who are unfamiliar with this disease. P. pseudomallei, first discovered by Whitmore and Krishnaswami in 1912, is a gram-negative aerobic rod, motile due to polar flagella, isolated from soil and natural waters in endemic areas,

Four actinobacterial strains, Y1847ᵀ, Y1694, W1665ᵀ and W1679, were isolated from the coal mine working environment in Shanxi Province, China. Sequence comparison of 16S rRNA genes indicated that the strains were closely related to Ornithinimicrobium kibberense K22-20ᵀ, with similarities ranging from 98.06 to 98.47%. Further phylogenetic analyses (based on 16S rRNA gene and core-genome) placed the strains within the genus Ornithinimicrobium and formed two distinct clades. The strains are Gram-stain-positive, facultative anaerobes and non-motile. Specifically, strain Y1847ᵀ is coccoid, whereas

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is a common spine deformity. Most cases are idiopathic. However, it can be predisposed by certain congenital and neuromuscular conditions, such as osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Surgical site infection (SSI) is a possible complication of scoliosis surgery. Corynebacterium jeikeium (C. jeikeium) is a rod-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium. It is part of the normal skin flora and has been implicated in various infections, especially in the immunocompromised. To date, only one case of SSI following scoliosis surgery has been reported to be secondary to C. jeikeium. In this repor

OBJECTIVES: Heyndrickxia oleronia is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium originally isolated from termites but has gained clinical importance due to its association with Demodex mites and rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Despite its clinical relevance, genomic resources from human-associated environments remain limited, with existing reference genomes derived from ecologically distant sources. This study aimed to provide the first complete genome sequence of H. oleronia EISK28 isolated from human facial skin to support future research on its role in skin health and disease.

Robinsoniella peoriensis is a Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the phylum Firmicutes and the family Lachnospiraceae. Until now, R. peoriensis is the only species of its genus. It was first isolated in 2003 during a study into the flora of lagoons and manure pits. Given the rarity of this microorganism and the sparse information in the literature about its way of transmission, the way to diagnose its infections and identify it in the microbiology laboratory, and its public health relevance, the present study aimed to identify all the published

BACKGROUND: The Clostridium species is a gram positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped microbe that is known to produce many toxins. Most infections by the Clostridium species involve C. botulinum, C. difficile, and C. perfringens. However, other types of Clostridium species are also clinically relevant, such as C. septicum and C. tertium.
CASE SUMMARY: We discuss a case of a 79-year-old patient with a past medical history of prostate cancer and alcohol abuse who presented to the hospital after being found down. They were admitted to the ICU for septic shock, and initial blood cultures grew C. septicu

Bacillus anthracis is a gram-positive, rod-shaped and endospore-forming bacterium that causes anthrax, a deadly disease to livestock and, occasionally, to humans. The spores are extremely hardy and may remain viable for many years in soil. Previous studies have identified East Qinghai and neighbouring Gansu in northwest China as a potential source of anthrax infection. This study was carried out to identify conditions and areas in the Qinghai Lake basin that are environmentally suitable for B. anthracis distribution. Anthrax occurrence data from 2005-2016 and environmental variables were spati

Listeria monocytogenes is a facultatively anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod-shape foodborne bacterium causing invasive infection, listeriosis, in susceptible populations. Rapid and high-throughput detection of this pathogen in dairy products is critical as milk and other dairy products have been implicated as food vehicles in several outbreaks. Here we evaluated confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy (785 nm laser) coupled with chemometric analysis to distinguish six closely related Listeria species, including L. monocytogenes, in both liquid media and milk. Raman spectra of different Listeria species
