'Flower of the body': menstrual experiences and needs of young adolescent women with cerebral palsy in Bangladesh, and their mothers providing menstrual support.

Determinants, consequences and potential solutions to poor adherence to anti-osteoporosis treatment: results of an expert group meeting organized by the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) and the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

UNLABELLED: Many patients at increased risk of fractures do not take their medication appropriately, resulting in a substantial decrease in the benefits of drug therapy. Improving medication adherence is urgently needed but remains laborious, given the numerous and multidimensional reasons for non-adherence, suggesting the need for measurement-guided, multifactorial and individualized solutions. INTRODUCTION: Poor adherence to medications is a major challenge in the treatment of osteoporosis. This paper aimed to provide an overview of the consequences, determinants and potential solutions to

Healthcare workers' beliefs, motivations and behaviours affecting adequate provision of sexual and reproductive healthcare services to adolescents in Cape Town, South Africa: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents' sexual and reproductive healthcare (SRH) needs have been prioritized globally, and they have the rights to access and utilize SRH services for their needs. However, adolescents under-utilize SRH services, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Many factors play a role in the under-utilization of SRH services by adolescents, such as the attitude and behaviour of healthcare workers. The aim of this study therefore, was to explore and gain an in-depth understanding of healthcare workers' beliefs, motivations and behaviours affecting adequate provision of these services to adol

Closing the Womb Door: Contraception Use and Fertility Transition Among Culturally Tibetan Women in Highland Nepal.

Objectives Whether in metropoles or remote mountain communities, the availability and adoption of contraceptive technologies prompt serious and wide-ranging biological, social, and political-economic questions. The potential shifts in women's capacities to create spaces between pregnancies or to prevent future pregnancies have profound and often positive biological, demographic, and socioeconomic implications. Less acknowledged, however, are the ambivalences that women experience around contraception use-vacillations between moral frameworks, generational difference, and gendered forms of labo

Breastfeeding and Methadone Therapy: The Maternal Experience.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence of low transfer of methadone into breast milk and the potential physical and psychological benefits that breastfeeding offers for methadone-exposed mothers and infants, the rate of breastfeeding initiation in this population is about half that reported nationally. This study describes the perceptions surrounding breastfeeding decisions and management among pregnant and postpartum women taking methadone. METHODS: Seven pregnant women and 4 postpartum women enrolled in methadone maintenance programs participated in semistructured, audiotaped interviews and focus gro

A comparative analysis of anorexia nervosa groups on Facebook.

PURPOSE: To analyze the content and culture of anorexia nervosa (AN)-related communication on the current major social network site (SNS) Facebook. METHODS: We searched for groups and sites related to AN on Facebook by means of a faux profile of a young female. Identified groups/sites were analyzed with respect to (1) category (education, self-help, professional help, pro-ana, anti pro-ana), (2) activity, (3) motivational aspects (prose, pictures), and (4) social support. RESULTS: Numerous relevant groups were found in all categories except that professional help was almost nonexistent. Pro-

Adolescent boys' experiences of first sex.

There are limited contextual data regarding first sexual experiences of younger adolescent men. Yet these data that are needed to inform sexually-transmitted-infection and early-fatherhood-prevention efforts, particularly in lower-income communities. Using qualitative methods, 14 adolescent men (ages 14-16, all low-income, most African American) from a mid-sized US city were asked about relationships and sexual experiences in a one-hour face-to-face semi-structured interview, with two follow-up interviews at six- to nine-month intervals. Story-telling was encouraged. Descriptions of first sex

Minority organ donation: the power of an educated community.

BACKGROUND: In 1978 in Washington, DC, we became aware of the scarcity of minority donors, especially African Americans. STUDY DESIGN: From then until now, 4 decades later, we have been involved in a grass roots effort emphasizing community education and empowerment combined with the use of mass media, which has increased minority donation rates exponentially. This program was initiated with a $500 grant from Howard University and was subsequently funded by National Institutes of Health grants and other funding totaling more than $10 million between 1993 and 2008. RESULTS: Between 1990 and 2

Thiopurines in inflammatory bowel disease: pharmacogenetics, therapeutic drug monitoring and clinical recommendations.

There is a growing interest in the use of thiopurines (azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine and 6-thioguanine) for the management of inflammatory bowel disease. The genetically controlled thiopurine (S)-methyltransferase enzyme is involved in the metabolism of these agents and is hypothesised to determine the clinical response to thiopurines. Diminished activity of this enzyme decreases the methylation of thiopurines, theoretically resulting in potential overdosing, while high thiopurine (S)-methyltransferase status leads to overproduction of toxic metabolites and ineffectiveness of azathioprine and

Fear and violence: raising the HIV stakes.

Through focus group methodology, the study examines three contexts that delineate the co-occurrence of intimate partner violence and sexual risk behaviors among 68 women on methadone. First, it explores the ways in which the presence of physical abuse in an intimate relationship prevents women from asking their partners to use a condom. Second, it describes the ways in which the couple's drug involvement increases the risk of physical and sexual violence, and concomitant sexual HIV risks. Third, it discusses the context in which sexual assault and rape occur in these established intimate relat

Differences in treatment history with manipulation for acute, subacute, chronic and recurrent spine pain.

Preference for treatment protocols used in the care of spine disorders are based more upon clinical impressions than upon systematic study of the pathology or treatment efficacy. As social emphasis moves to cost containment strategies, quantitative data is necessary to give guidance for rational policy decisions. This study sets a description of the clinical experience obtained in a group practice, teaching clinic engaged in management of spine disorders. The same subjects were separately reported as being broadly representative of those seen in private using a cash payment policy. Clinical ch…

Cultural threads of memory: barriers and motivations for brain health, physical activity and nutrition among middle-aged and older Latinos.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) are projected to increase in the Latino population. Physical activity (PA) and adhering to the Mediterranean-DASH diet for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) have been shown to reduce the risk of AD/ADRD. However, limited research has explored Spanish-speaking Latinos' perceptions of PA and nutritional changes for brain health. Thus, the purpose of this study was to (1) explore Latinos' perceptions of brain health and health behavior modifications related to PA and nutrition to promote brain health and (2) amplify the voices of low-in
