BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of hand eczema is multifactorial. Exogenous factors such as skin irritation and contact sensitization contribute to this as well as an endogenous atopic predisposition.
OBJECTIVE: This article provides a review of the pathogenetic factors relevant to the development of hand eczema.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An evaluation of the current literature on the pathogenesis of hand eczema was carried out.
RESULTS: Impairment of the epidermal barrier function plays an essential role for the development of hand eczema. The molecular biological basis and the possible significa

INTRODUCTION: The Achenbach syndrome was described in the '50s by the German physician Walter Achenbach and corresponds to an entity characterized by the appearance of ecchymosis or purpura and even bruises on the fingers and sometimes on the feet. It courses benignly and is self-limited.
METHODS: We present the case of a 60-year-old woman who was diagnosed with this syndrome after performing laboratory tests, antibodies and images without finding alterations in them, with improvement after receiving analgesia and physical means.
RESULTS: The Achenbach syndrome continues to be an unknown ent

Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic yeast infection caused by Cryptococcus neoformans that remains the most common systemic fungal infection in immunosuppressed patients and often presents with signs of meningitis. Primary cutaneous cryptococcosis (PCC) is a more rare clinical identity that is characterized by skin lesions confined to 1 body region, often presenting as a whitlow or phlegmon with positive culture for C neoformans and no evidence of simultaneous dissemination. We report a rare case of PCC in a 73-year-old man with intact cell-mediated immunity.

A 68-year-old female patient had been treated locally and systemically for onychomycosis of the left thumbnail for 1 year. During the course of treatment there was increasing destruction of approximately 50% of the nail without Hutchinson's sign. Dermoscopically there were yellow to brown vertical stripes of varying width in the remaining parts of the nail. In the visible nail matrix reddish, brownish and grey-black colored components with varying differential structures could be detected. An acrolentiginous melanoma with a diameter of 1.04 mm could be identified histologically and the associa

The authors report a case (in Itajai, Santa Catarina State, Brazil) of tinea nigra in a 4-year-old female child which spontaneously healed. We discuss the clinical and epidemiological aspects of the mycosis and this rare case of spontaneous healing.

Hyperthrofic lichen planus is considered a variant of lichen planus with marked epidermal hyperplasia in response to persistent itch. It is clinically, characterized by symmetric hyperkeratotic plaques, of purplish-grey color, often located in the pretibial region. Intense pruritus, refractoriness to conventional treatments and the possibility of association of the long-term injuries with squamous cell carcinoma requires an effective treatment. The first-line treatment is corticosteroids which can be applied either topically or systemically. Other therapeutic modalities proposed are: NB-UVB ph

A 56-year-old woman presented with a 6 month history of bullae and whitish plaques of the fingers. She had chronic renal failure, but no joint pains or evidence of arthritis. An aspirate of fluid from a bulla revealed uric acid crystals and serum uric acid was elevated at 16.2 mg/dL. A diagnosis of tophaceous gout was made.

Tinea nigra is a superficial mycosis associated with a dematiaceous fungus called Phaeoannellomyces werneckii. It is clinically characterized by asymptomatic non-scaly brown and black macules, the most common localization is the palmar region. Only one bilateral case occurring on the plantar skin and four palmar bilateral cases have been reported. We report the case of a 5-year-old boy presenting two hyperpigmented lesions with an irregular contour in both palmar regions, which appeared three months prior to presentation. Topical treatment with ketoconazole was effective.
