Minimal research has been published about inducements for sports and race betting, despite their ready availability and aggressive advertising. This paper aimed to document the range and structural features of these inducements, and analyse their alignment with the harm minimisation and consumer protection goals of responsible gambling. A scan of all inducements offered on the websites of 30 major race and sports betting brands located 223 separate inducements which we categorised into 15 generic types, all offering financial incentives to purchase. These comprised sign-up offers, refer-a-frie

BACKGROUND: It has long been known that drug users may use a variety of pharmaceutical preparations by injection, many of which are not inte … mboli. One strategy for alleviating these consequences is to promote the implementation of IDUSF in harm reduction programs, accompanied by training of social workers, peers and drug users.

There is increasing recognition that symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be associated not only with harm avoidance, but also with sensations of things being incomplete or not "just right." Although preliminary research supports the presence of both harm avoidance and incompleteness in OCD, their validity as separate constructs has not been tested beyond the use of self-report measures. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to behaviorally validate the separability of harm avoidance and incompleteness using an unselected student sample. Consistent with hypotheses, self-re

In this Harm Reduction Digest Sheridan, Butler, Wilkins and Russell address the emergent phenomenon of so-called 'legal party pills' which have become a significant drug issue in New Zealand and elsewhere. Although banned in a number of countries, they are currently legally available in New Zealand where they are marketed as 'safe' alternatives' to 'illicit' drugs often used in the dance scene such as MDMA and amphetamines. The authors describe the availability and use of these substances in New Zealand, summarize what is known about their effects, and speculate on harm reduction interventions…

Although self-harm has been observed among patients with eating disorders, the effects of such tendencies on treatment outcomes are unclear. The current study employed structural equation modeling to (a) evaluate the relationship between self-harm and changes in body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness in a large sample of patients (n = 2061) who underwent inpatient treatment, and (b) to examine whether the relationship between self-harm and changes in body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness during inpatient treatment remains significant when controlling for change in negative affect du

BACKGROUND: Managed alcohol programs (MAPs) are harm reduction services that provide regular, measured doses of beverage-grade alcohol alongside social and health services, aiming to reduce nonbeverage alcohol consumption and harms associated with excessive intoxication and withdrawal. Most MAPs are paired with supportive housing, which can be at a single building ("single-site") or more uncommonly across multiple apartments ("scattered-site"). The North End Community Health Centre - Mobile Outreach Street Health (MOSH) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, established Atlantic Canada's first MAP, using a …

BACKGROUND: Chemsex, defined as the intentional use of psychoactive substances to enhance sexual experiences, is associated with increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), mental health harms, and disruptions in continuity of care, particularly among men who have sex with men. In Brazil, health services lack an integrated, stigma-sensitive care pathway (CP) for prevention, clinical management, and harm reduction. Embedding a CP within the Health Care Network (HCN) is essential to organize access, continuity, and quality of care.

INTRODUCTION: Despite reductions in overdose deaths reported nationally in 2025, overdose remains a leading cause of death in Michigan and the broader United States. Naloxone is a safe and highly effective opioid antagonist that can reverse opioid overdose, and community-based distribution to people at highest risk of overdose is a key overdose death prevention strategy.
METHODS: In 2021, Harm Reduction Michigan (HRMI) launched an innovative naloxone box model to boost community-based naloxone distribution through publicly accessible, unlocked, outdoor naloxone boxes. To evaluate HRMI's nalox…

Canada has been a pioneer in adopting a harm reduction approach to address risks associated with drug use for people who inject drugs. Today, Canada is home to 39 supervised injection sites spread throughout the country. The scientific literature demonstrates, unequivocally, that these sites have numerous health benefits for people who inject drugs, namely by decreasing risks of blood-borne diseases, overdose, and mortality. Yet, a lack of clear guidelines on optimal locations for the implementation of such sites and NIMBYISM ("Not In My Back Yard") have been stumbling blocks for planned and o…

In this paper, we explore how the social harm approach can be adapted within drug policy scholarship. Since the mid-2000s, a group of critic … ntralization of lived experience within the research process and outlines how this might align with harm reduction approaches. We conclude by arguing that the social harm approach challenges the idea that neutrality is the goal in drug policy and explicitly seeks to expand new avenues in activist research and social justice approaches to policymaking.

INTRODUCTION: In Canada, the COVID-19 pandemic collided with an ongoing overdose crisis driven by a toxic unregulated drug supply. Public he … 'Social distancing' guidelines (e.g., guest restrictions in supportive housing, reduced capacity in harm reduction services) compounded these risks and resulted in more women using drugs alone, reducing opportunities for timely overdose intervention. In response, participants practiced individualised acts of caregiving (e.g., establishing informal networks that …

Policy Points People are dying at record numbers from overdose in the United States. Concerted action has led to a number of successes, including reduced inappropriate opioid prescribing and increased availability of opioid use disorder treatment and harm-reduction efforts, yet ongoing challenges include criminalization of drug use and regulatory and stigma barriers to expansion of treatment and harm-reduction services. Priorities for action include investing in evidence-based and compassionate policies and programs that address sources of opioid demand, decriminalizing drug use and drug parap

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies commonly recommend the integration of harm reduction programs with health and social services to improve the well-being of persons who inject drugs (PWIDs). This study identified service utilization clusters for PWIDs attending a syringe exchange program (SEP) in 2017 to better understand in-house service usage.
METHODS: We applied Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Hierarchical Clustering on Principal Components to classify 475 PWIDs into clusters using anonymized, SEP records data from New York. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identify sociode…

BACKGROUND: Although Africa has long borne the brunt of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic, until recently, the continent has been considered largely free of illicit drug use and injection drug use in particular. In Uganda, the number of people who use or inject drugs (PWUD and PWID, respectively) has increased, and PWID are a key population at high risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, harm reduction practices, including providing clean injection equipment and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), have only recently been pilote…

CONTEXT: The illicit drug supply is rapidly evolving. Equally important to gathering drug supply data for monitoring is timely sharing of information with people who use drugs, the providers who care for them, law enforcement partners, and public health stakeholders so that efforts to avoid harmful substances, take preventive actions, and better target interventions can occur.
PROGRAM: The Massachusetts Drug Supply Data Stream (MADDS) is the country's first statewide community drug checking program. Founded on public health-public safety partnerships, MADDS collects remnant drug packaging and

Background: Naloxone distribution and training programs have been implemented to combat the opioid overdose crisis. While many individuals are trained, ongoing naloxone access is not ensured by these programs. We explored whether people who use drugs (PWUD) in Baltimore City, Maryland could identify a location where they would go to obtain naloxone and how training changed where they would be willing to access naloxone. Methods: We surveyed 574 PWUD as to whether they had heard of, been trained to use, and knew where to get naloxone. Among participants who had heard of naloxone, we tested for
