Transitions for youth and young adults with eating disorders and/or other mental health conditions: a Canadian guideline.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are severe mental illnesses with high rates of mortality, morbidity, and reduced quality of life. Their onset occurs during adolescence and early adulthood, coinciding with the critical transition from pediatric to adult care. To address the lack of guidelines to support ED transitions in Canada, this study developed evidence-based guideline recommendations. METHODS: Scoping review methodology was employed using comprehensive searches across seven databases, supplemented by forward and backward citation chaining to identify records on youth and young adults

Country data on AMR in Mexico in the context of community-acquired respiratory tract infections: links between antibiotic susceptibility, local and international antibiotic prescribing guidelines, access to medicine and clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest threats to global public health. Selection of resistant bacteria is driven by inappropriate use of antibiotics, amongst other factors. COVID-19 may have exacerbated AMR due to unnecessary antibiotic prescribing. Country-level knowledge is needed to understand options for action. OBJECTIVES: To review AMR in Mexico and initiatives addressing it. Identifying any areas where more information is required will provide a call to action to minimize any further rises in AMR and to improve patient outcomes. METHODS: National AMR initiat

Implementing evidence in residential aged care facilities: a longitudinal multi-method evaluation of knowledge broker evolution.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge brokers act as intermediaries to bridge evidence-to-practice gaps. Limited evidence describes how the knowledge broker role in health settings evolves over time. This study aimed to (a) examine the evolution of knowledge broker activities over a 12-month implementation trial and (b) identify enablers necessary to strengthen and support the role. METHODS: This longitudinal multi-method study is nested within the 12-month Evidence-based Medication knowledge Brokers in Residential Aged CarE (EMBRACE) trial. The EMBRACE intervention involved knowledge brokers working in 19 r

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) Consult Series #48: Immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraception for women at high risk for medical complications.

Reproductive planning is essential for all women and most important for those with complex health conditions or at high risk for complications. Pregnancy planning can allow these high-risk women the opportunity to receive preconception counseling, medication adjustment, and risk assessment related to health conditions that have a direct impact on maternal morbidity and mortality risk. Despite the need for pregnancy planning, medically complex women face barriers to contraceptive use, including systemic barriers, such as underinsurance for women at increased risk for complex medical conditions

Syphilis: the international challenge of the great imitator.

Syphilis is a systemic disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. The name of this ancient but pervasive infection is proverbial to health care providers. The worldwide recognition of this term, however, argues with the intricacy of the disease in addition to the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges that persistently affect the global control of syphilis up to the present. This article focuses on the varied presentations of the infection, earning the title the "great imitator." The article also tackles other significant concerns regarding this malady.

Biological Risk in Italian Prisons: From the COVID-19 Management to the Development of a Standardized Model for Emergency Response.

Within the confinements of critical infrastructures, the COVID-19 pandemic is posing a series of challenges to Health Management. In the spotlight of highly contagious and quick spreading diseases within such enclosed facilities, whether it be a detention facility or otherwise, the health and safety of those living within its internment is paramount. This paper aims to highlight the specific challenges and the possible solutions to counteract this problem, starting from the lessons learnt from the Italian prison system case study. Following the general description of the available resources wi

Perspectives on Advance Care Planning in Adult Congenital Heart Disease: An Australian Sample.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) now survive well into adulthood though their overall long-term survival remains below the general population. Advance care planning (ACP) has been endorsed by clinical guidelines, yet it is infrequently discussed and/or implemented. METHODS: As part of an international multicentre APPROACH-IS II study, 184 consecutive ACHD patients completed a questionnaire regarding their perceptions on the future and ACP. RESULTS: There were 88 males and 96 females in the study. The mean age was 29.4±8.94 years. The mean score for future hea

Demographic and Health Services Characteristics Associated With Testing for Sexually Transmitted Infections Among a Commercially Insured Population of HIV-Positive Patients.

BACKGROUND: Presence of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) can increase the likelihood of HIV transmission, and current treatment guidelines indicate that HIV-positive persons should be screened yearly for STIs. Therefore, we examined recent insurance claims data to determine whether private insurance beneficiaries who are HIV-positive were receiving recommended STI testing. METHODS: We used data from the 2011 and 2012 MarketScan data sets, a longitudinal population-based database that collects claims from commercially insured persons in private insurance and is conducted by Truven Health

Evaluation and Clinical Relevance of Plan Quality Indices in Intracavitary Brachytherapy for Cervical Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains to be a significant health concern globally, with India contributing to nearly one-quarter of cases worldwide. Intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT) combined with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) is the standard of care, optimizing tumour dose while sparing normal tissues. Plan quality indices such as Dose Homogeneity Index (DHI), Overdose Index (OI), Dose Non-uniformity Ratio (DNR), and Conformity Index (COIN) are crucial in evaluating treatment plans, yet their predictive clinical relevance remains underexplored. METHODOLOGY: In this Retrospective study, 84

[Limitations and Potential Harms of AI Chatbots in Mental Health Services].

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly used for health-related dialogue and psychoeducation. Their highly realistic, opaque, and human-like interactions may affect mental health, particularly in vulnerable users. Objective: To synthesize (through August 2025) the clinical benefits and risks of AI chatbots in psychiatric contexts, emphasizing risk mechanisms (reality/simulation blurring, anthropomorphism, and sycophancy or agreement bias) and practical implications. Methods: A PubMed search was conducted, complemented by technical/regulatory sources; we included revi

Optimizing Kidney Disease Management during Ramadan: Evidence-Based Risk Stratification and Tailored Strategies.

Fasting during Ramadan poses distinct challenges for individuals with kidney disease, requiring a careful balance between spiritual commitments and health maintenance. This article combines insights from recent research and guidelines to offer a thorough framework for risk assessment. Patients are classified into low, moderate, and high-risk categories based on individual, environmental, and health-related factors. Management approaches are organized into four main areas: spiritual support, non-drug interventions, medication adjustments, and modifications to kidney replacement therapy (KRT). E

Measurement and management of adult blood pressure in the peri-operative period: updated guidelines from the Association of Anaesthetists and the British and Irish Hypertension Society.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining stable blood pressure during surgery is a key responsibility of anaesthetists. Peri-operative omission and reintroduction of antihypertensive drugs, general anaesthesia, neuraxial and regional techniques can all cause significant fluctuations in blood pressure, particularly in patients with hypertension. Since the first edition of this guideline there has been more literature regarding peri-operative management, but some areas still lack standardisation. METHODS: This was a planned update of the 2016 guidelines from the Association of Anaesthetists and British Hypert

[Diagnosis and treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws from an oncologist's perspectives].

Along with the improvement of cancer treatment and the increasing use of bone-modifying agents, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has become more and more common, which may lead to reduce quality of life for patients and interrupt their regular tumor treatments. Being an oral condition in the maxillofacial region of patients associated with adverse side effect of certain bone-modifying agent related cancer therapies, MRONJ falls in a gray area between oncology and stomatology and can be challenging to treat and manage if standard clinical practice and care management guidelin

Use of technology to provide mental health services to youth experiencing homelessness: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the importance to address mental health issues as early as possible, youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) often lack prompt and easy access to health services. Recently, there has been a surge of studies focusing on leveraging technology to improve access to mental health services for YEH; however, limited efforts have been made to synthesise this literature, which can have important implications for the planning of mental health service delivery. Thus, this scoping review aims to map and synthesise research on the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs)

Climate Change and the Urgent Need to Prepare Persons With Multiple Sclerosis for Extreme Hurricanes.

Climate change is contributing to increasingly hazardous tropical cyclones that endanger persons living in susceptible coastal and island communities. People living with chronic illness, including multiple sclerosis (MS), face unique challenges and vulnerabilities when exposed to hurricane hazards. Disaster and emergency preparedness requires a customized approach that considers the necessary adaptations to accommodate the mobility, self-care, sensory, cognitive, and communication impairments of persons living with MS. Related considerations include the potential for worsening neurologic signs

Human immunodeficiency virus-associated tuberculosis care in Botswana: evidence from a real-world setting.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is among the world's top public health challenges and the leading killer of people with HIV, yet is a treatable disease. This study aimed to assess, in a real-world setting, the implementation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and Cotrimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT) policy, specific interventions proven to benefit patients in HIV-associated TB care. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in Botswana in the Serowe/Palapye district, a largely urban district with a high burden of HIV-associated TB with a high case fatality, at Segkoma and Palapye ho

Standardizing Chlamydia pneumoniae assays: recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA) and the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control (Canada).

Chlamydia pneumoniae has been associated with atherosclerosis and several other chronic diseases, but reports from different laboratories are highly variable and "gold standards" are lacking, which has led to calls for more standardized approaches to diagnostic testing. Using leading researchers in the field, we reviewed the available approaches to serological testing, culture, DNA amplification, and tissue diagnostics to make specific recommendations. With regard to serological testing, only use of microimmunofluorescence is recommended, standardized definitions for "acute infection" and "pas

Animal-vehicle collisions, roadkilled animals, and human health: A scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Animal-vehicle collisions (AVCs) are a growing global problem with significant implications for human, animal, and ecosystem health. In the United States, approximately one million vertebrates are killed by vehicles each day. Research on roadkilled animals has increased over time, especially regarding wildlife and ecosystem impacts, economic costs, and human physical health risks. However, less is known about how involvement with AVCs or encounters with roadkilled animals influences human health more broadly, including psychological, emotional, psychosocial, and community-level out
