Is the presence of transient evoked otoacoustic emmissions in ears with acoustic neuroma significant?

One hundred sixty-eight patients admitted for acoustic neuroma removal were involved in this study. In all cases, the size of the tumor and the presence or absence of tinnitus and vertigo or dizziness were evaluated. Investigated functional procedures included bilateral measures of pure-tone audiometry (PTA), auditory brainstem response (ABR), electronystagmography (ENG), and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs). Thirty-five patients (21%) had normal preoperative TEOAEs in the affected ear, whereas 133 patients (79%) failed to show reproducible responses. The aims of this study were

Little evidence for a chronotolerance effect for impulse noise exposure in the C57BL/6J mouse.

Noise-induced hearing loss affects a large number of adults and children worldwide, and continues to be a major public health problem. The cochlea is an organ that maintains delicate metabolic homeostasis and precise mechanical architecture. Disruption of either can cause temporary or permanent injury. Impulse noises, which are short-duration, high-level bursts of sound caused by explosions, such as gunfire, can injure the cochlea through combinations of mechanical and metabolic injury. Susceptibility to the metabolic component of noise injury may vary with the circadian rhythm, a phenomenon k

Cognitive Benefits of Hearing Aids in Elderly Indian Population: A Longitudinal Study.

UNLABELLED: Age-related hearing loss is common among older individuals and is linked to cognitive impairment and a decrease in overall quality of life. Although hearing aids enhance auditory capabilities, their influence on cognitive performance in the Indian context has not been thoroughly investigated. This study investigates the cognitive benefits of hearing aids in elderly Indian patients with age-related hearing loss. A prospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary care centre between January 2021 and December 2022. The study included 200 elderly patients who were fitted with behin

Impact of Bilateral Vestibulopathy on Spatial and Nonspatial Cognition: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is considered an independent risk factor for dementia. Growing evidence in animal and human studies suggest that not only hearing loss but also vestibular loss might result in cognitive deficits. The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence of spatial and nonspatial cognitive deficits in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy. As different causes of bilateral vestibulopathy are associated with hearing loss, the objective is to evaluate if these cognitive deficits are due to the vestibular loss of the patients with bilateral vestibulopathy, or to their hearin

A novel recessive mutation in OXR1 is identified in patient with hearing loss recapitulated by the knockdown zebrafish.

Hereditary hearing loss is a highly genetically heterogeneous disorder. More than 150 genes have been identified to link to human non-syndromic hearing impairment. To identify genetic mutations and underlying molecular mechanisms in affected individuals and families with congenital hearing loss, we recruited a cohort of 389 affected individuals in 354 families for whole-exome sequencing analysis. In this study, we report a novel homozygous missense variant (c.233A > G, p.Lys78Arg) in the OXR1 gene, which was identified in a 4-year-old girl with sensorineural hearing loss. OXR1 encodes Oxidatio

Erythrocyte adenosine A2B receptor prevents cognitive and auditory dysfunction by promoting hypoxic and metabolic reprogramming.

Hypoxia drives aging and promotes age-related cognition and hearing functional decline. Despite the role of erythrocytes in oxygen (O2) transport, their role in the onset of aging and age-related cognitive decline and hearing loss (HL) remains undetermined. Recent studies revealed that signaling through the erythrocyte adenosine A2B receptor (ADORA2B) promotes O2 release to counteract hypoxia at high altitude. However, nothing is known about a role for erythrocyte ADORA2B in age-related functional decline. Here, we report that loss of murine erythrocyte-specific ADORA2B (eAdora2b-/-) accelerat

Unitary ototoxic gentamicin exposure may not disrupt the function of cochlear outer hair cells in mice.

BACKGROUND: Previous study showed that mild ototoxic exposure could induce a reversible hearing impairment, and the loss and secondary incomplete recovery of cochlear ribbon synapses could be responsible for the hearing loss. However, it remains unclear whether cochlear outer hair cells' (OHCs) functions are affected. OBJECTIVE: To verify whether the function of OHCs are also affected significantly after the ototoxic exposure. METHODS: Mice were injected intraperitoneally with 100 mg/kg concentration of gentamicin daily for 14 days. Distortion Product of Oto-acoustic Emission (DPOAE) was det

[Psychogenic hearing impairment in differential diagnosis of sudden hearing loss].

INTRODUCTION: Acute hearing impairment or deafhess may manifest as unilateral or bilateral. The etiopathogenetic substrate may be organic, functional and of unknown origin, the so-called idiopathic. The functional causes of impaired hearing and deafness also include psychogenic factors, where the essential dysfunction exists between the conscious simulation of hearing impairment and deafness for benefits versus psychogenic hearing impairment in conversion disorders where physical symptoms result as a symbolic expression of long-term psychological problems or conflicts. A new adhesive bone conduction hearing system effectively treats conductive hearing loss in children.

OBJECTIVES: Bone conduction hearing devices integrated in softbands (BCDSs) are frequently not well accepted by children with conductive hearing loss due to pressure on the head, sweating, or cosmetic stigma. A non-surgical hearing system (ADHEAR) uses a new bone conduction concept consisting of an audio processor connected to an adhesive adapter fixed behind the ear. This study is the first to evaluate the audiological and clinical outcome of this novel system, comparing it with conventional BCDSs in a short- and mid-term follow-up in children under 10 years of age. METHODS: The ADHEAR was c

Progress on mechanisms of age-related hearing loss.

Age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, is a common cause of hearing loss in elderly people worldwide. It typically presents as progressive, irreversible, and usually affects the high frequencies of hearing, with a tremendous impact on the quality of life. Presbycusis is a complex multidimensional disorder, in addition to aging, multiple factors including exposure to noise, or ototoxic agents, genetic susceptibility, metabolic diseases and lifestyle can influence the onset and severity of presbycusis. With the aging of the body, its ability to clean up deleterious substances produced in the

In vivo binding and hearing loss after intracochlear infusion of KHRI-3 antibody.

The IgG1 mouse monoclonal antibody (MAb) KHRI-3, binds to an antigen of 65-68 kDa expressed on inner ear supporting cells in guinea pigs. We previously showed [Nair et al. (1995) Monoclonal antibody induced hearing loss. Hear. Res. 83, 101-113] that mice carrying the KHRI-3 hybridoma develop high frequency hearing loss and loss of hair cells in the basal turn suggesting that this MAb causes immune-mediated sensorineural hearing loss. To evaluate the specificity of this effect, sterile KHRI-3 and control IgG1 preparations were infused directly into the guinea pig cochlea using Alzet mini-osmoti

Some uncharacteristic clinical signs and symptoms of acoustic neuroma.

OBJECTIVE: The most common initial symptoms of the acoustic neuroma are unilateral hearing loss that evolves gradually, tinnitus, and unsteadiness. However, atypical presentations may sometimes occur, more often with a small intracanalicular neuroma or with a large medial neuroma placed in the cerebellopontine angle. RESULTS: In our group of 51 patients suffering from acoustic neuroma, atypical presentations were observed in 9 cases (17.6%). Two patients had normal hearing function but reported tinnitus; two patients reported sudden hearing loss, with partial recovery; two patients had a hist

Genetic correction of TRMU allele restored the mitochondrial dysfunction-induced deficiencies in iPSCs-derived hair cells of hearing-impaired patients.

Sensorineural hearing loss often results from damaged or deficient inner ear hair cells. Mitochondrial 12S rRNA 1555A>G mutation has been associated with hearing loss in many families. The m.1555A>G mutation is a primary factor underlying the development of hearing loss and TRMU allele (c.28G>T, p.Ala10Sser) encoding tRNA thiouridylase interact with m.1555A>G mutation to cause hearing loss. However, the tissue specificity of mitochondrial dysfunction remains elusive and there is no highly effective therapy for mitochondrial deafness. We report here the generation of induced pluripotent stem ce

Overlooked KCNQ4 variants augment the risk of hearing loss.

Pathogenic variants of KCNQ4 cause symmetrical, late-onset, progressive, high-frequency-affected hearing loss, which eventually involves all frequencies with age. To understand the contribution of KCNQ4 variants to hearing loss, we analyzed whole-exome and genome sequencing data from patients with hearing loss and individuals whose hearing phenotypes were unknown. In KCNQ4, we identified seven missense variants and one deletion variant in 9 hearing loss patients and 14 missense variants in the Korean population with an unknown hearing loss phenotype. The p.R420W and p.R447W variants were found
