Present status with impacts and roles of miRNA on Soil Transmitted Helminthiosis control: A review.

Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH) is one of the most widespread Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), and almost 1.5 billion of the global population is affected, mostly in the indigent, countryside sectors of tropics/subtropics. STH, commonly caused by various nematodes, adversely affects the hosts' growth, cognatic development, and immunity. Albendazole is most commonly used against STH (Soil-Transmitted Helminths) but resistance has already been reported in different countries. To date, no effective vaccine is present against STH. miRNAs are a unique class of small non-coding RNA, regulati…

Strongyloidiasis-related lung involvement: too much of a bad thing.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Strongyloidiasis is a soil-transmitted helminthiasis, a neglected tropical disease that affects 300-900 million individuals globally. Strongyloides stercoralis is associated with cutaneous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal clinical manifestations. Chronicity is due to an autoinfective cycle, and host immunosuppression can lead to severe and fatal disease. Lung involvement is significant in severe strongyloidiasis, and Strongyloides has a complex association with a number of lung diseases, which will be discussed in this review. RECENT FINDINGS: The treatment of chronic lun…

Albendazole became the reference drug for intestinal helminthiasis with in addition a good efficacy on giardiasis. Since some intestinal parasites are not pathogenic, a treatment is not necessarily required when a parasite is found in a stool examination.

Neglected tropical disease control in post-war Sierra Leone using the Onchocerciasis Control Programme as a platform.

Strategic investments in the control of neglected tropical diseases (NTD) spearheaded by the US Government, the British Government and other bilateral donors such as foundations and key pharmaceutical partners have enabled the treatment of millions of people for the five targeted debilitating diseases (lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis and trachoma), paving the way for the potential elimination as public health problems of some of these diseases. Like many other countries, Sierra Leone has a high burden of these major NTDs. Despite the fragil…

Next-generation molecular-diagnostic tools for gastrointestinal nematodes of livestock, with an emphasis on small ruminants: a turning point?

Parasitic nematodes of livestock have major economic impact worldwide. Despite the diseases caused by these nematodes, some advances towards the development of new therapeutic agents and attempts to develop effective vaccines against some of them, there has been limited progress in the development of practical diagnostic methods. The specific and sensitive diagnosis of parasitic nematode infections of livestock underpins effective disease control, which is now particularly important given the problems associated with anthelmintic resistance in parasite populations. Traditional diagnostic metho

In vitro and in vivo efficacy of aqueous extract of Caryocar brasiliense Camb. to control gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep.

A major problem faced in sheep rearing has been the rapid acquisition of anthelminthic-resistant populations of gastrointestinal nematodes. In the search for alternatives, aqueous extract of the peel of Caryocar brasiliense was evaluated for larval development inhibition, egg-hatching inhibition, and fecal nematode egg count reduction in sheep. For in vivo analysis, the doses were calculated according to a 10% lethal dose derived from acute toxicity tests in mice, and the efficacy was evaluated for two periods following oral administration of the extract. Egg-hatching inhibition at concentrati

MICHELINdb: a web-based tool for mining of helminth-microbiota interaction datasets, and a meta-analysis of current research.

BACKGROUND: The complex network of interactions occurring between gastrointestinal (GI) and extra-intestinal (EI) parasitic helminths of humans and animals and the resident gut microbial flora is attracting increasing attention from biomedical researchers, because of the likely implications for the pathophysiology of helminth infection and disease. Nevertheless, the vast heterogeneity of study designs and microbial community profiling strategies, and of bioinformatic and biostatistical approaches for analyses of metagenomic sequence datasets hinder the identification of bacterial targets for f

Helminths of the black bear, Ursus americanus, in New Brunswick.

Between May 1989 and October 1991, 544 black bears Ursus americanus were collected in New Brunswick and examined for Trichinella spiralis larvae. In addition, 110 of these bears were examined for filarial nematodes, and the entire intestinal tracts of 12 bears were examined for intestinal helminths. Four species of helminths were identified from these bears, including Trichinella spiralis, Dirofilaria ursi, Baylisascaris transfuga, and Taenia krabbei. This represents the first documentation of T. spiralis in Maritime Canada and extends eastward the range of T. krabbei.

Helminths of sheep and goats in desert areas of south-west Mauritania (Trarza).

Faecal samples were obtained from sheep and goats before, during and after the rainy season at three locations in south-west Mauritania. Several animals were also necropsied at the same time. Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent worm. Infection by digestive-tract strongyles and Strongyloides papillosus was always very light (prevalence less than 20%). Sheep were more heavily infected than goats but animals under 1 year of age were not infected by digestive-tract strongyles. It is likely that young small ruminants became infected during the rainy season and that the parasites so acquired

Efficacy of thiophanate and albendazole against natural infections of Dicrocoelium dentriticum, Fasciola hepatica, and gastrointestinal nematodes and cestodes in sheep.

The anthelmintic efficacy of thiophanate and albendazole was compared in sheep with heavy infestations of Dicrocoelium dentriticum. The effectiveness of each drug was determined by counting the numbers of D. dentriticum in animals killed 21 days after treatment. In one group, the dose of thiophanate recommended for use against gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes (50 mg kg-1 live weight) was found to be 74.4% effective against D. dentriticum. Two tablets (each containing 76 mg of active ingredient) of albendazole per 30 kg live weight were given to a second group and the dose repeated after 1 week.

Helminths of the invasive Podarcis muralis (Laurenti, 1768) and native P. tauricus (Pallas, 1814) wall lizards from two localities in southern Ukraine.

Helminth communities of the invasive Podarcis muralis and the native P. tauricus were investigated in southern Ukraine based on newly collected material and historical data. A total of nine P. muralis and 20 P. tauricus specimens were examined. Two helminth species were recorded in each lizard host. In P. muralis, the nematode Spauligodon saxicolae and cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Centrorhynchus globocaudatus were found, while S. saxicolae and the cestode Oochoristica tuberculata were found in P. tauricus. Historical data from 116 P. tauricus collected between 1951 and 1990 revealed a to

Histopathologic Evaluation, Ultrastructure, and Molecular Characterization of Acanthocephalan Infections in Freshwater Turtles.

Turtle acanthocephalans are a depauperate group of helminths, yet they parasitize a quarter of all turtle species in North America. Despite acanthocephalans being common in turtles, their potential as disease-causing agents remains unknown. In other vertebrate hosts, acanthocephalans are known to cause pathologic changes upon attachment (via with their armed proboscis) to the intestinal wall of the host. Herein, we report new turtle host associations, ultrastructural characterization, and molecular data for turtle acanthocephalans. However, the primary goal of this study was to evaluate whethe
