The differential diagnosis of homosexuality.

The treatment of homosexuality presents serious difficulties owing to its multifactorial aetiology and variety of psychopathological views. … other neurotic personality types and related psychiatric conditions, tends to be linked with latent heterosexuality and responds well to all forms of psychotherapy. On the other hand, true homosexuality is often the major presenting symptom of borderline states, narcissistic disorders, psychopathy and the schizo-affective psychoses and carries an unfavourable pro …

Sex differences in the brain, behavior, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Sex differences in the brain are reflected in behavior and in the risk for neuropsychiatric disorders. The fetal brain develops in the male direction due to a direct effect of testosterone on the developing neurons, or in the female direction due to the absence of such a testosterone surge. Because sexual differentiation of the genitals takes place earlier in intrauterine life than sexual differentiation of the brain, these two processes can be influenced independently of each other. Gender identity (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender), sexual orientation (heterosexuality…

Intestinal parasitic infections in homosexual men: prevalence, symptoms and factors in transmission.

In a controlled study 67.5% of 200 homosexual men but only 16% of 100 heterosexual men were found to be infected with intestinal parasites. Entamoeba histolytica was isolated from 27% of the homosexual and 1% of the heterosexual men, and Giardia lamblia was isolated from 13% of the homosexual and 3% of the heterosexual men. The presence of symptoms could not be correlated with infection except when the infection was caused by more than one organism, including G. lamblia. Symptoms were much more common in both infected and uninfected homosexuals than in heterosexuals. Among the homosexual men r

Lifetime use of multiple tobacco/nicotine products at the intersection of gender and sexual minority identity: Findings from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority youth are at higher risk for tobacco/nicotine use than cisgender and/or heterosexual youth. Little is known about how the use of multiple tobacco/nicotine products differs among youth by sexual orientation and gender identity. This study sought to determine whether the lifetime number of tobacco/nicotine products differs by sexual orientation and gender identity. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional analysis of nationally representative data on 14 457 students ages 9-19+ who participated in the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey. Weighted means, ad

Measurement of sexual identity in surveys: implications for substance abuse research.

Researchers are increasingly recognizing the need to include measures of sexual orientation in health studies. However, relatively little attention has been paid to how sexual identity, the cognitive aspect of sexual orientation, is defined and measured. Our study examined the impact of using two separate sexual identity question formats: a three-category question (response options included heterosexual, bisexual, or lesbian/gay), and a similar question with five response options (only lesbian/gay, mostly lesbian/gay, bisexual, mostly heterosexual, only heterosexual). A large probability-based

Knowledge of prophylaxis treatment therapy among HIV-positive prisoners.

The present study examined the level of knowledge and understanding of Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia (PCP) treatment therapy among heterosexual and non-heterosexual inmates (prisoners) with HIV-infection. This study seeks to determine if any differences exist between HIV-positive inmates based on sexual orientation, with reference to PCP treatment therapy. It is our contention that this effort will provide health professionals with valuable insight regarding delivering expanded care for HIV-infected individuals in incarcerated settings. The participants for this study were 99 HIV-positive inm

Racial/Ethnic and Sexual Identity Differences in the Associations Between School Bullying and Cyberbullying Victimization and Types of Substance Use.

Bullying victimization is found to be associated with substance use, and this association is relevant to racial/ethnic minority and sexual minority (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) adolescents. However, few studies have focused on the role of intersectionality in the linkage between bullying victimization and substance use. The current research explores the relationship between school- and cyberbullying victimization and various types of substance use among a racially/ethnically diverse sample of heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents. The 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System

Improving HIV Prevention Among Heterosexual Men Seeking Sexually Transmitted Infection Services in Malawi: Protocol for a Type I Effectiveness-Implementation Hybrid Randomized Controlled Trial of Systems Navigator-Delivered Integrated Prevention Package (HPTN 112-NJIRA Study).

BACKGROUND: Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains one of the most efficacious interventions for preventing HIV, but its effectiveness is often limited by poor persistence. Although regional efforts have primarily focused on young women and men who have sex with men, heterosexual men in East and Southern Africa represent a crucial group to engage and retain in PrEP care-both to improve health outcomes for men and to interrupt HIV transmission chains. Men seeking sexually transmitted infection (STI) services are particularly vulnerable to HIV acquisition, yet only a few interventions have teste

Tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, and polysubstance use disparities among sexual identity groups of US young adult women and men.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority young adults (SMYAs) display higher rates of polysubstance use (i.e., current use of multiple substances) than their heterosexual peers, but limited research has explored differences by gender and specific sexual identity. METHODS: Latent class analyses (LCAs) examined past-month use of combustible tobacco (i.e., cigarettes, cigars, hookah), e-cigarettes, cannabis, and alcohol among 2,343 YAs (M age = 24.69, SD = 4.70; 57.4 % women, 42.6 % men; 18.0 % bisexual, 9.4 % gay or lesbian; 36.2% racial/ethnic minority) residing in 6 US metropolitan areas. Disparities in cancer incidence by sexual orientation.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer risk factors are more common among sexual minority populations (e.g., lesbian, bisexual) than their heterosexual peers, yet little is known about cancer incidence across sexual orientation groups. METHODS: The 1989-2017 data from the Nurses' Health Study II, a longitudinal cohort of female nurses across the United States, were analyzed (N = 101,543). Sexual orientation-related cancer disparities were quantified by comparing any cancer incidence among four sexual minority groups based on self-disclosure-(1) heterosexual with past same-sex attractions/partners/identity; (2)

Judgments toward male and transgendered victims in a depicted stranger rape.

There has been an increasing amount of research interest into perceptions of male rape in recent years. However, no research has assessed how people react when a transgendered person is raped. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of transgendered status and sexuality on victim blame and perceived severity in a depicted rape scenario. The sexuality of the victim was manipulated to include a heterosexual, homosexual, cross-dresser, female-to-male transsexual, and male-to-female transsexual. It was predicted that the heterosexual victims would be judged the most positively and tha

Non-disclosed men who have sex with men in UK HIV transmission networks: phylogenetic analysis of surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Patients who do not disclose their sexuality, including men who do not disclose same-sex behaviour, are difficult to characterise through traditional epidemiological approaches such as interviews. Using a recently developed method to detect large networks of viral sequences from time-resolved trees, we localised non-disclosed men who have sex with men (MSM) in UK transmission networks, gaining crucial insight into the behaviour of this group. METHODS: For this phylogenetic analysis, we obtained HIV pol sequences from the UK HIV Drug Resistance Database (UKRDB), a central repositor

Mental Disorders and Suicidality by Sexual Orientation Status Among First-Year College Students in France.

Studies indicate that non-heterosexual young adults experience higher rates of mental health problems in various settings. This study seeks to further explore these associations, distinguishing heterosexual, gay/lesbian, bisexual and individuals questioning their sexual identity. Data were drawn from the French portion of the World Mental Health International College Student survey initiative (n = 3,545). Logistic regressions were performed to estimate the associations of sexual orientation with 12-month mental disorders and suicidal ideation and behaviors. Overall, 81.6% (n = 2,894) of studen

Disparities in primary Cesarean birth by sexual orientation: a population-based analysis across three longitudinal cohorts.

BACKGROUND: The study aim was to quantify differences in risk for Cesarean birth vary by sexual orientation. METHODS: We pooled data from singleton, live births in the Nurses' Health Studies 2 and 3, and the Growing Up Today Study (N = 102,298 pregnancies). We used generalized estimating equations to fit logistic models for risks of primary Cesarean birth comparing sexual minority (SM) to completely heterosexual participants, controlling for year and age. SM participants were further stratified into heterosexual with prior same-sex experience (i.e., identifying as heterosexual, but with same-

The changing modes of human immunodeficiency virus transmission and spatial variations among women in a minority prefecture in southwest China: An exploratory study.

Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China has a high human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence rate. This study examined the changing modes of HIV transmission among women with new HIV infections and explored the spatial heterogeneities in the factors associated with heterosexual transmission in this minority region. The data consisting of women with new HIV infections from 2011 to 2014 were collected from multiple sources. New infections were identified by BED capture enzyme immunoassay. The Bayesian hierarchical model was used to estimate the proportion of women with new HIV i

We can't "just deal with it": Emotion regulation may not be an effective protective factor against adverse experiences in LGBTQ+ adolescents.

Despite known disparities in both adverse experiences and well-being between LGBTQ+ and cisgender/heterosexual youth, research on how LGBTQ+ youth may differently regulate negative emotions and cope with adverse experiences is scant. In a sample of 459 12- to 17-year-old Canadian adolescents, we tested whether emotion regulation capacities and the use of specific regulation strategies differently affected LGBTQ+ v. cisgender/heterosexual youth's well-being and/or differently moderated the association between adverse experiences and well-being. Additionally, we examined developmental difference

Effects of Multiple Forms of Information Bias on Estimated Prevalence of Suicide Attempts According to Sexual Orientation: An Application of a Bayesian Misclassification Correction Method to Data From a Systematic Review.

Multiple epidemiologic studies demonstrate a disparity in suicide risk between sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual) and heterosexual populations; however, both "exposure" (sexual minority status) and outcome (suicide attempts) may be affected by information bias related to errors in self-reporting. We therefore applied a Bayesian misclassification correction method to account for possible information biases. A systematic literature search identified studies of lifetime suicide attempts in sexual minority and heterosexual adults, and frequentist meta-analysis was used to generate unadjusted

HIV prevention among drug users: an international perspective from Thailand.

All too often in reviews of HIV prevention needs, the role of drugs is summarily dismissed, especially in contexts where the heterosexual epidemic is the primary mode of transmission. Substance use and abuse, particularly injection drug use, play a paramount role in maintaining the heterosexual spread of HIV, as well as in maintaining epidemics where heterosexual spread of the infection has come under control due to prolonged and concerted HIV prevention activities. This article presents several themes to place in the developing country context what we have learned about substance use-related
