Inferior hip dislocation after falling from height: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic inferior hip dislocation is the least common of all hip dislocations. Adult inferior hip dislocations usually occur after high-energy trauma, very few cases are reported without fracture. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 26-year-old female was brought to the emergency department with severe pain in the left hip, impaired posture and restricted movement following a fall from 15m height. The hip joint was fixed in 90° flexion, 15° abduction, and 20° external rotation. No neurovascular impairment was determined. On radiologic examination, a left ischial type inferior hip dislocati

Differences in the gait characteristics of patients with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy compared with age-matched controls.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy have a high incidence of injuries while walking. Biomechanical analysis of their walking may lead to treatments to reduce these injuries. The purpose of this study was to compare (1) the gait characteristics, (2) the plantar-flexor peak torques, and (3) the ankle range of motion of subjects with diabetes mellitus (DM) and peripheral neuropathy with those of age-matched controls. SUBJECTS: Twenty subjects, 10 with DM and a history of peripheral neuropathy (DM group) (mean age = 58 years, SD = 15, range = 35-75) and 10 sub

[Prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism in orthopedic surgery].

The patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery, which includes total hip replacement (THR), total knee replacement (TKR), and hip fracture surgery (HFS), represent a group that has a particularly high risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE), and routine thromboprophylaxis has been standard of care for >20 years. The following article summarizes data derived from numerous randomized clinical trials of thromboprophylaxis following THR, TKR, and HFS; areas of orthopedic surgery for which there are much less data, including knee arthroscopy and isolated lower extremity injuries, are also reviewed.

Fracture of the neck of the femur associated with posterior dislocation of the hip.

Two patients are described, each with a fracture-dislocation of the hip combined with a fracture of the neck of the same femur. Open reduction combined with internal fixation was performed in both cases. Eight years later one patient had developed avascular necrosis of the femoral head; no signs of avascular necrosis or associated arthritis have appeared in the other patient after four years. A plea is made for considering this more conservative type of operation for these serious injuries before resorting to total hip replacement.

The term "floating" used in traumatic orthopedics.

BACKGROUND: The term "floating" is used in orthopedic literature to describe certain patterns of skeletal injuries that share one common character which is disruption and discontinuity of bones above and below a joint. The first time used in orthopedic literature being in late 1970 to describe a type of elbow injury. Later the word was used increasingly and applied to a variety of injuries affecting the knee, shoulder, hip, forearm, hand, and ankle. Currently, there are about 12 different skeletal injuries described as floating. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article was to define the term "floa

Screening for musculoskeletal system malformations and birth injuries in newborns: Results of a screening program in two hospitals in Shenzen, China.

IMPORTANCE: There are a variety of musculoskeletal malformations and injuries that can occur in newborns. These can be a significant cause of perinatal death or a reason for miscarriage and can lead to long-term functional issues if not managed appropriately. There is no systematic and well-established screening program for neonatal musculoskeletal malformations and injuries in China now. OBJECTIVE: To report the incidence and types of congenital musculoskeletal malformations in two hospitals in Shenzhen City, to explore and discuss the details of the screening procedure and improve future pr

Injuries of the obturator muscles in professional soccer players.

PURPOSE: Obturator externus and internus muscular tears are uncommon injuries. Only a few case reports exist, mainly in high-level athletes. Our aim is to describe a series of obturator externus and internus muscular tears in professional soccer players. METHODS: Injury data from four teams from the First Division of the Spanish Soccer League were collected over a total of four seasons. Any soccer player who sustained an injury to either the obturator externus or internus identified on magnetic resonance (MRI) was included. All injured players were treated non-operatively with a goal of retur

Association of Hip and Trunk Strength With Three-Dimensional Trunk, Hip, and Knee Kinematics During a Single-Leg Drop Vertical Jump.

Martinez, AF, Lessi, GC, Carvalho, C, and Serrao, FV. Association of hip and trunk strength with three-dimensional trunk, hip, and knee kinematics during a single-leg drop vertical jump. J Strength Cond Res 32(7): 1902-1908, 2018-Kinematic changes have been correlated with different lower-limb injuries. Movement is influenced by multiple factors and strength is one of the contributors that can influence it. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation among trunk and hip isometric strength with trunk and lower-limb kinematics during a single-leg drop vertical jump. Twenty-three

Pubic-type dislocation of the hip combined with fracture of the ipsilateral greater trochanter. A case report.

Traumatic anterior dislocation of the hip is a relatively uncommon injury, and when it does occur it is frequently combined with osteochondral fracture of the femoral head or the acetabulum. Anterior dislocation of the hip with an associated fracture of the ipsilateral greater trochanter is extremely rare. This paper presents a case of this rare type of injury and clarifies the mechanism of the injury using a cadaver specimen.

[The safety belt: effects on injury patterns of automobile passengers].

Since 1984 the law concerning safety belts has been implemented; this paper deals with the findings in 386 victims of motor accidents who were x-rayed between 1981 and 1989. Minor injuries have been ignored. The number of passengers wearing belts increased by 30% after 1984. The number of passenger injuries did not decrease. Injuries directly caused by the belts included a small number of fractures of clavicles, the sternum and ribs and one pelvic fracture, one serious abdominal injury with tearing of the mesenteric artery and one ruptured spleen. An indirect result of wearing seat belts was a

Simultaneous bilateral fractures of the hip following a grand mal seizure. An unusual complication.

Pathological fractures as a consequence of convulsive seizures without direct trauma occur in 0.3% of cases. Some lesions such as bilateral posterior dislocation of the shoulder, fracture-dislocation of the shoulder or fracture and/or dislocation of the hip strongly suggest a seizure as the aetiology. We report on a patient with simultaneous central dislocation of one hip with fracture of the contralateral femoral neck provoked by spontaneous seizures. Unrecognized associated injuries following a convulsion may result in long-term functional disability and legal consequences.

Hip Arthroscopy: Applications and Technique.

Hip arthroscopy is infrequently performed in North America. The anatomic constraints of the joint and the lack of equipment specifically designed for this application have contributed to the lack of surgical experience. Because of the potential for significant neurovascular injury, familiarization with precise portal placement is essential. In properly selected patients, hip arthroscopy allows diagnosis of a variety of disorders. The authors believe this technique has a significant role in the treatment of acetabular labral tears, loose bodies, chondral injuries to the joint, and septic arthri

Femoral shaft fracture with ipsilateral hip dislocation in a child.

A child victim of low speed violence was found to have a fractured femur and dislocation of the ipsilateral hip. This combination of injuries in a child is very rare. The dislocation was not initially recognized because of absence of suggestive history, symptoms, and signs. After recognition, open reduction of the hip dislocation was achieved through a posterior approach. One month later an osteotomy at the femur fracture allowed the leg to fall to neutral while maintaining the femoral head in the most desirable position.

Acetabular fractures. Clinical outcome of surgical treatment.

Sixty patients with acetabular fractures were treated surgically. All fractures were a result of high energy trauma, most with significant associated injuries. Fifty-three of the patients were followed up for at least 2 years. Clinical outcome was analyzed clinically using the Harris hip score and radiographically. In 41 (77.4%) of the patients, the surgical procedure was judged successful (Harris hip score greater than 80 points). Three factors were found to be statistically significant predictors of such an outcome: patient age younger than 40 years; simple fractures based on the classificat

Neuromuscular characteristics of individuals displaying excessive medial knee displacement.

CONTEXT: Knee-valgus motion is a potential risk factor for certain lower extremity injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament injury and patellofemoral pain. Identifying neuromuscular characteristics associated with knee-valgus motion, such as hip and lower leg muscle activation, may improve our ability to prevent lower extremity injuries. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that hip and lower leg muscle-activation amplitude would differ among individuals displaying knee valgus (medial knee displacement) during a double-legged squat compared with those who did not display knee valgus. We further s

Genitourinary complications in orthopaedic surgery.

Genitourinary complications following orthopaedic intervention are uncommon but well-described occurrences and exist on a spectrum of severity. These complications vary depending on the anatomic location and surgical approach, with surgery of the spine, hip, and pelvis of particular concern. Injuries to the urinary tract may present acutely with urinary retention or hematuria. However, they often have a delayed presentation with severe complications such as urinary fistula and recurrent infection. Delayed presentations may place the onus of timely and proper diagnosis on the orthopaedic provid

Fractures of the femoral head: a narrative review.

Fractures of the femoral head are rare injuries, which typically occur after posterior hip dislocation. The Pipkin classification, developed in 1957, is the most commonly used classification scheme to date. The injury is mostly caused by high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or falls from a significant height.Emergency treatment consists of urgent closed reduction of the hip joint, followed by non-operative or operative treatment of the femoral head fracture and any associated injuries. There is an ongoing controversy about the suitable surgical approach (anterior vs. posterior) for

Acetabular fractures following rugby tackles: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Rugby is the third most popular team contact sport in the world and is increasing in popularity. In 1995, rugby in Europe turned professional, and with this has come an increased rate of injury. CASE PRESENTATION: In a six-month period from July to December, two open reduction and internal fixations of acetabular fractures were performed in young Caucasian men (16 and 24 years old) who sustained their injuries after rugby tackles. Both of these cases are described as well as the biomechanical factors contributing to the fracture and the recovery. Acetabular fractures of the hip
