Timber harvest alters mercury bioaccumulation and food web structure in headwater streams.

Timber harvest has many effects on aquatic ecosystems, including changes in hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes that can influence mercury (Hg) cycling. Although timber harvest's influence on aqueous Hg transformation and transport are well studied, the effects on Hg bioaccumulation are not. We evaluated Hg bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and food web structure in 10 paired catchments that were either clear-cut in their entirety, clear-cut except for an 8-m wide riparian buffer, or left unharvested. Average mercury concentrations in aquatic biota from clear-cut catchments

The effects of multiyear and seasonal weather factors on incidence of Lyme disease and its vector in New York State.

BACKGROUND: More frequent extreme weather and warmer weather due to climate change might change the spatiotemporal distributions of vector-borne diseases, including Lyme disease. However, limited studies have examined the associations of Lyme disease and its vectors with weather factors, especially multi-year and multi-weather factors related to vector life cycle. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the associations between multi-year, unique weather indicators (relevant to tick and host activities) and Lyme disease incidence or documented I. scapularis encounters in New York State (NYS). METHODS: U

Statistical modeling of the effect of rainfall flushing on dengue transmission in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Rainfall patterns are one of the main drivers of dengue transmission as mosquitoes require standing water to reproduce. However, excess rainfall can be disruptive to the Aedes reproductive cycle by "flushing out" aquatic stages from breeding sites. We developed models to predict the occurrence of such "flushing" events from rainfall data and to evaluate the effect of flushing on dengue outbreak risk in Singapore between 2000 and 2016. METHODS: We used machine learning and regression models to predict days with "flushing" in the dataset based on entomological and corresponding rain

The importance of thinking beyond the water-supply in cholera epidemics: A historical urban case-study.

BACKGROUND: Planning interventions to respond to cholera epidemics requires an understanding of the major transmission routes. Interrupting short-cycle (household, foodborne) transmission may require different approaches as compared long-cycle (environmentally-mediated/waterborne) transmission. However, differentiating the relative contribution of short- and long-cycle routes has remained difficult, and most cholera outbreak control efforts focus on interrupting long-cycle transmission. Here we use high-resolution epidemiological and municipal infrastructure data from a cholera outbreak in 185

Storage and release of road-salt contamination from a calcareous lake-basin fen, western Massachusetts, USA.

Road salt (NaCl) applications to highways have increased stream sodium and chloride concentrations due to retention within watersheds. The mechanisms for retention and export of Na(+) and Cl(-) from different environments are not fully understood. This field study examines the hydrologic and cation exchange processes that store and release Na(+) and Cl(-) from a calcareous fen adjacent to a highway. Despite high concentrations of Ca(2+) and Mg(2+), elevated salt concentrations enable Na(+) to occupy up to 15% of the cation exchange capacity of shallow peat. Calculations of selectivity coeffici

Contrasting controls on the phosphorus concentration of suspended particulate matter under baseflow and storm event conditions in agricultural headwater streams.

Whilst the processes involved in the cycling of dissolved phosphorus (P) in rivers have been extensively studied, less is known about the mechanisms controlling particulate P concentrations during small and large flows. This deficiency is addressed through an analysis of large numbers of suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected under baseflow (n=222) and storm event (n=721) conditions over a 23-month period across three agricultural headwater catchments of the River Wensum, UK. Relationships between clay mineral and metal oxyhydroxide associated elements were assessed and multiple

Concurrent photolytic degradation of aqueous methylmercury and dissolved organic matter.

Monomethyl mercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that threatens ecosystem viability and human health. In aquatic systems, the photolytic degradation of MeHg (photodemethylation) is an important component of the MeHg cycle. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is also affected by exposure to solar radiation (light exposure) leading to changes in DOM composition that can affect its role in overall mercury (Hg) cycling. This study investigated changes in MeHg concentration, DOM concentration, and the optical signature of DOM caused by light exposure in a controlled field-based experiment using water sa

Spatial patterns of mercury in macroinvertebrates and fishes from streams of two contrasting forested landscapes in the eastern United States.

Controls on mercury bioaccumulation in lotic ecosystems are not well understood. During 2007-2009, we studied mercury and stable isotope spatial patterns of macroinvertebrates and fishes from two medium-sized (<80 km(2)) forested basins in contrasting settings. Samples were collected seasonally from multiple sites across the Fishing Brook basin (FB(NY)), in New York's Adirondack Mountains, and the McTier Creek basin (MC(SC)), in South Carolina's Coastal Plain. Mean methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations within macroinvertebrate feeding groups, and mean total mercury (THg) concentrations within mo

Evaluating the fate of chlorinated ethenes in streambed sediments by combining stable isotope, geochemical and microbial methods.

The occurrence of chlorinated ethene transformation in a streambed was investigated using concentration and carbon isotope data from water samples taken at different locations and depths within a 15 x 25 m study area across which a tetrachloroethene (PCE) plume discharges. Furthermore, it was evaluated how the degree of transformation is related to groundwater discharge rates, redox conditions, solid organic matter content (SOM) and microbial factors. Groundwater discharge rates were quantified based on streambed temperatures, and redox conditions using concentrations of dissolved redox-sensit

Survey of bovine trypanosomosis in the Kachia Grazing Reserve, Kaduna State, Nigeria.

This study assessed the prevalence of trypanosomes in cattle at the Kachia Grazing Reserve (KGR) in March and June 2004 and in February 2005. A total of 1293 cattle blood samples were collected at random. The samples were analysed using the buffy coat technique and Giemsa thin blood films for parasite detection and identification. The effects of herd pen location to watering and grazing point's distances (using the global positioning system (GPS)) were determined and mean Packed cell volume (PCV) assessed. Overall, the detected prevalence of trypanosomosis was 8.4%, much higher than the previo

Mapping of zones potentially occupied by Aedes vexans and Culex poicilipes mosquitoes, the main vectors of Rift Valley fever in Senegal.

A necessary condition for Rift Valley fever (RVF) emergence is the presence of Aedes (Aedimorphus) vexans and Culex (Culex) poicilipes mosquitoes carrying the arbovirus and responsible for the infection. This paper presents a detailed mapping in the Sahelian region of Senegal of zones potentially occupied by these mosquitoes (ZPOMs) whose population density is directly linked to ecozones in the vicinity of small ponds. The vectors habitats and breeding sites have been characterized through an integrated approach combining remote sensing technology, geographical information systems, geographica

Effects of flooding and drought on water quality in Gulf Coastal Plain streams in Georgia.

Since 1994, water-quality constituents have been measured monthly in three adjacent Coastal Plain watersheds in southwestern Georgia. During 1994, rainfall was 650 mm above annual average and the highest flows on record were observed. From November 1998 through November 2000, 19 months had below average rainfall. Lowest flows on record were observed during the summer of 2000. The watersheds are human-dominated with row-crop agriculture and managed forestlands being the major land uses. However, one watershed (Chickasawhatchee Creek) had 10 to 13% less agriculture and greater wetland area, espe

Water use strategies of Populus euphratica across age classes along groundwater depth gradients in the lower Tarim River.

How water source use and intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) are linked across tree age classes under contrasting groundwater conditions remains unclear in desert riparian forests. We assessed water use strategies of young, middle-aged, and mature Populus euphratica in the lower Tarim River during ecological water conveyance (EWC) and non-EWC periods by combining hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes of xylem and potential source waters with a Bayesian mixing model and leaf δ13C-derived iWUE. Across the five monitoring sections, mean groundwater depth was significantly lower during EWC than du

A spatiotemporal framework for assessing hypoxic risk to riverine aquatic life: from summary data to actionable insight in India.

Riverine hypoxia, oxygen depletion in flowing waters, poses ecological risk, yet its spatial and temporal dynamics remain poorly characterized. This study presents a novel risk-based spatiotemporal framework for assessing riverine hypoxia across Indian river systems, utilizing 18,976 site-year summary data points (annual minimum, mean, maximum) across 87 sub-basins over 17 years. We conceptualized 'contextual hypoxic risk' as the probability of summary statistics falling below a critical threshold (4.0 mg L⁻1), distinguishing emerging, intermittent, and perennial hypoxic conditions. Hypoxic ri

Habitat Preference and Spatiotemporal Habitat Use of the Endangered Flat-Headed Cat in the Proposed Lundu Mangrove Protected Forest, Sarawak, Malaysia.

The flat-headed cat Prionailurus planiceps is one of the least-detected and most threatened felids in Southeast Asia, and limited field records have constrained understanding of its habitat associations and activity patterns. An initial biodiversity survey in the proposed Lundu Mangrove Protected Forest, Sarawak, yielded no detections; however, a subsequent photographic record in November 2021 prompted a targeted camera-trap survey to document habitat-specific detection patterns and spatiotemporal activity. Between August 2021 and May 2024, 148 camera trap units were deployed across multiple h

Geogenic PAHs fractionation and mobilization driven by acid mine drainage in karst coal mining watersheds.

Geogenic coal-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) migration and risks in karst mines remain understudied, especially acid mine drainage (AMD)-facilitated PAH transport via karst dual hydrologic systems and rapid groundwater flow. This study integrates field monitoring, multivariate statistics and laboratory leaching simulations to clarify PAH origins, AMD-controlled release mechanisms and multi-level environmental risks in karst coal basins. Surface water total PAH concentrations vary substantially with seasons and peak in dry periods. Traditional diagnostic ratios poorly distingui

Using concentration-discharge hysteresis to infer recharge processes in karst springs: A case study of the Malenščica and Unica springs, SW Slovenia.

Karst aquifers are recharged both by diffuse infiltration through soil and rock (autogenic recharge) and by concentrated inflow through swallow holes and sinking streams (allogenic recharge). Differences in the origin of water are reflected in rapid changes in its physicochemical and microbiological characteristics. Various approaches are used to monitor these changes and analyse the data obtained. In this paper, concentration-discharge hysteresis analysis is used to define and compare the recharge characteristics of two karst springs. The study was conducted in a binary karst aquifer in the c

Water Quality Improvements and Hydrogeomorphic Change Over 20 Years Contributed to Macrophyte Community Recovery in the Upper Mississippi River.

Several large rivers across the globe have recently undergone noticeable improvements to water quality. Yet, the cascading ecological consequences for aquatic life, including macrophytes, are largely unknown, owing to the lack of suitable long-term data and the difficulty of modelling community-level responses. Our study leveraged multiple big datasets from 1998 to 2019 within a 400-km stretch of the Upper Mississippi River in the United States, which experienced major changes to hydrogeomorphology, water quality, and climate during the 22-year study. These decadal changes resulted from both n

Assessment of Metal Contamination and Human Health Risk in the Buffalo River Estuary, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Metal contamination in estuarine environments poses environmental and public health concerns, particularly where surface waters support domestic and subsistence uses. This study assessed the seasonal distribution, controlling mechanisms, and non-carcinogenic health risks of selected metals (Mg, Al, Ba, Fe, Mn, and Zn) in the Buffalo River Estuary, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Water samples were collected from 11 stations during wet and dry seasons and analyzed using standard methods. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied to e

A multi-tracer approach using stable isotopes and elements to assess provenance of Arapaima gigas.

Commercially valuable fish face intense pressure from capture fisheries with demand for fish protein, whether farmed or wild-caught, growing globally. Consequently, the provenance of fish is increasingly vital to regulatory bodies, market chain actors, and consumers. The limitations of current fish provenance methods can be overcome using complementary techniques. Here, we applied a multi-tracer approach combining stable isotope ratios (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) and trace element mass fraction to assess the provenance of the Amazonian pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) in Brazil. Dorsal muscle samples from 79 ind
