During an outbreak of rubella, more than 4,000 primary schoolchildren who had been vaccinated with BCG before entrance were tested with tube … then gradually restored to the healthy level after 30 days. There was no evidence of suppression of hypersensitivity among subclinical infection cases. Methodologic problems concerning tuberculin data analysis in this kind of research are discussed, with an emphasis on the importance of a quantitative approach to these considerations.

A patient with ampicillin-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) showed pronounced delayed hypersensitivity to ampicillin sodium by both intradermal and patch tests. In addition, a positive lymphocyte transformation test to ampicillin was demonstrated by an in vitro study. On the basis of these findings and the data found in the literature, we believe that delayed hypersensitivity plays a crucial role in the development of drug-induced TEN. We recommend patch testing with suspected medication in such cases.

Cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity (CBH) is an immunologic reaction extensively studied in the guinea pig. We elicited this reaction in the conjunctiva by systemically sensitizing guinea pigs to ovalbumin in incomplete Freund's adjuvant. Skin tests showed basophils in the skin one week after sensitization when challenged with ovalbumin. However, the conjunctiva showed an eosinophilic reaction with few basophils. This is compatible with other extracutaneous manifestation of the CBH reaction.

We investigated the antigen-specific sensitization of basophils in the peripheral circulation of guinea pigs using an in vitro histamine release assay. Animals were primed for cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity (CBH) by intradermal injection of either keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) or ovalbumin (OA) in saline. Basophils isolated from these animals 7 days after sensitization did not release histamine to the specific antigen in vitro. Salicylazosulfapyridine has been used for a number of years as therapy for ulcerative colitis. Reported toxicities are usually minor. This case report represents an acute allergic reaction to the drug. Characterized by fever, rash, eosinophilia, nephritis, and hepatitis. Resolution occurred with discontinuation of salicylazosulfapyridine. Although similar reactions have been reported with the antimicrobial sulfonamides, none has been fully described with salicylazosulfapyridine, a combination of a sulfonamide and salicylate.

Delayed hypersensitivity skin testing was performed on 520 surgical patients. Significantly higher incidences of sepsis and mortality (p less than 0.001) were found in the abnormal patients as compared to normal responders in the preoperative (322 patients), postoperative and post-trauma (115 patients), and nonoperative (83 patients) groups. Male Wistar rats have been sensitized to Bordetella pertussis using a mixture of Freund's incomplete adjuvant and pertussis organisms. Intrapleural challenge 12 days later with pertussis produced a marked delayed inflammatory response, maximal at 48 hours and dominated by influx of mononuclear cells.
