Resveratrol as a Multifunctional Topical Hypopigmenting Agent.

Melanin is produced in melanocytes and stored in melanosomes, after which it is transferred to keratinocytes and, thus, determines skin color. Despite its beneficial sun-protective effects, abnormal accumulation of melanin results in esthetic problems. A range of topical hypopigmenting agents have been evaluated for their use in the treatment of pigmentary disorders with varying degrees of success. Hydroquinone (HQ), which competes with tyrosine, is the main ingredient in topical pharmacological agents. However, frequent occurrence of adverse reactions is an important factor that limits its us

Clear cell papulosis: Dermatoscopic findings and literature review.

Clear cell papulosis is a rare skin condition that predominantly develops in patients of Asian background during their early childhood. We present a new case of clear cell papulosis of a 1-year-old Thai girl presented with multiple hypopigmented macules and papules on the lower abdomen and pubic area for 3 months and also review the previous 41 cases published in the literature since 1987. Herein, for the first time, we report the dermatoscopic features of clear cell papulosis that represents as depigmented homogenous structureless lesions. This would be beneficial for distinguishing clear cel

Unilateral Poliosis of Eyelashes.

A 68-year-old man presented with significant, asymptomatic, unilateral eyelash poliosis, not associated with any ophthalmic or systemic conditions. He reported that this started about 40 years ago with a few lashes in the central portion of his eyelid and that adjacent eyelashes subsequently became involved over the next 4 to 5 days. He had normal ophthalmologic and neurologic examinations with no other relevant medical history reported. The case might be an unusual presentation of a halo nevus. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first such case reported regarding the eyelashes

Bier's spots with onset in childhood.

Bier spots are small, irregular, hypopigmented macules that are usually found on the arms and legs. The macules disappear when the limb is raised. Bier spots have been reported in association with a number of conditions but there is no consistent association to specific desease. Although they usually affect young adults, we report a case of Bier spots that began in childhood. As an asymptomatic and possibly transitional condition, the disease does not require treatment.

A convenient screening method to differentiate phenolic skin whitening tyrosinase inhibitors from leukoderma-inducing phenols.

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinase is able to oxidize a great number of phenols and catechols to form ortho-quinones. Ortho-quinones are highly reactive compounds that exert cytotoxicity through binding with thiol enzymes and the production of reactive oxygen species. Certain phenolic (and catecholic) compounds are known to induce contact/occupational leukoderma through activation to ortho-quinones. OBJECTIVE: We report a convenient screening method to follow the oxidation of those leukoderma-inducing phenols by mushroom tyrosinase. METHODS: Oxidation of phenolic compounds by mushroom tyrosinase was fol

Segmental hypomelanosis and hypermelanosis arranged in a checkerboard pattern are distinct naevi: flag-like hypomelanotic naevus and flag-like hypermelanotic naevus.

The categorization of congenital hypo- or hyperpigmented skin lesions following a segmental pattern has been a long-lasting matter of debate and have been reported under various and often incorrect terms. To reassess published hypomelanotic and hypermelanotic lesions that did not follow Blaschko lines nor a phylloid pattern of mosaicism, we carried out an extensive and critical review of the worldwide literature. Seventy-four retrieved cases consisted of lateralized hypomelanotic lesions arranged in a flag-like pattern or appearing as large patches of grossly oval or angulated shape and sharp,

[Differential diagnostics of hypomelanoses].

Hypomelanoses of the skin encompass a wide spectrum of congenital and acquired alterations in melanin pigmentation. These diseases can be localized or universal. The pathobiology of cutaneous hypomelanoses is heterogeneous and includes defects in melanoblast migration from the neural crest to the epidermis, alterations in melanogenesis and melanin transfer to keratinocytes, and destruction of pigment cells by autoimmune and inflammatory processes. Importantly, some congenital forms of universal hypomelanoses are associated with involvement of internal organs (e.g., Hermansky-Pudlack or Chédiak
