[Xenophobia and experienced abandonment--a depth-hermeneutic analysis of a single case].

A single case study is presented from a feasibility study on social, psychic and neurobiological causes of violence in adolescence focusing on right-wing extremist and xenophobic youth. Results from psychological assessments and a structured biografical reconstruction are analyzed. The case illustrates a typical developmental path of a right-wing, xenophobic and violent male adolescent who experienced early and repeated exclusion and social marginalization. Results from psychological testing demonstrated additional developmental risk factors, such as disorganized attachment representations and

Taxonomy of the psychosocial consequences caused by the violence of persecution of ETA's network.

This paper delimits and analyzes the effects of the harassment perpetrated by ETA's terrorist network in the Basque Country. The aim was to provide a taxonomy of the consequences of psychological violence and to validate this taxonomy, by means of a content analysis of 37 testimonies of victims of terrorist violence. The taxonomy of consequences of psychological violence is made up by four components: 1. the effects on the context of the persons affected, 2. on their emotional state, 3. on cognition and 4. on behavior. Results show a predominance of contextual consequences and negative cogniti

Functional abnormalities of the default network during self- and other-reflection in autism.

Recent studies of autism have identified functional abnormalities of the default network during a passive resting state. Since the default network is also typically engaged during social, emotional and introspective processing, dysfunction of this network may underlie some of the difficulties individuals with autism exhibit in these broad domains. In the present experiment, we attempted to further delineate the nature of default network abnormality in autism using experimentally constrained social and introspective tasks. Thirteen autism and 12 control participants were scanned while making tr

So different yet so alike? Political collective narcissism predicts blatant dehumanization of political outgroups among conservatives and liberals.

Previous research found that political polarization goes hand in hand with being strongly identified with a political ingroup. In this research, we assumed this should be the case only among those who identify with their political ingroup in a narcissistic way (stemming from frustrated needs and predicting outgroup hostility). This hypothesis was tested in one experimental (Study 4, n = 525) and three cross-sectional (Study 1, n = 320; Study 2, n = 316; Study 3, n = 500) studies conducted among American and Polish participants. In all studies, we found a consistent positive link between politi

MISAPSY: childhood maltreatment, food insecurity, psychological distress and professional integration among socioeconomically disadvantaged young adults - a mixed-methods study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The MISAPSY study (Childhood Maltreatment, Food Insecurity, Psychological Distress and professional integration among socioeconomically disadvantaged young adults) aims to model the interrelations between child maltreatment, psychological distress and food insecurity, among precarious young adults enrolled in French integration services (Mission Locale). This population is exposed to multiple forms of social and material precarity. While food insecurity constitutes a tangible and increasingly prevalent dimension of precarity, it remains underexplored. By examining food insecurity a

Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychological Distress Associated With the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with various negative psychological consequences. This is a challenge for the society as regular psychological services cannot be offered to the same extent as before the pandemic. In addition to the requirement of social distancing, there is a need to adjust psychological treatment components like exposure to avoid increasing the spread of the infection. Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) has an established evidence base for a range of psychiatric problems and has been suggested as one possible approach to deal with the s

Menstrual tracking technologies and fertility: evaluating accuracy, utility, and impact on time to pregnancy.

Accurate identification of the fertile window is essential for individuals trying to conceive, yet menstrual tracking modalities differ in precision, accessibility, and clinical utility. This narrative review traces the evolution of menstrual monitoring, from early calendar systems, physiologic observations, at-home hormone testing, to modern digital platforms, and evaluates their efficacy in predicting ovulation. We summarize evidence that tracking behaviors increase fecundability, highlight the limitations in data quality and user experience, and examine device equity, psychological implicat

Psychological profile and heart rate variability in adults with self-perceived chronic stress: secondary analysis from a clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress is a major public health issue linked to psychological vulnerability and autonomic dysregulation. While heart rate variability (HRV) is widely recognized as a biomarker of stress adaptability, few studies have characterized the psychophysiological profile of individuals who self-identify as chronically stressed. Understanding this relationship could clarify the integration between subjective perception and autonomic control mechanisms. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 54 adults reporting chronic self-perceived stress for at least 6 months. Psychol

Sensory immersion vs. cultural reflection: a multi-factor analysis of dual-process mechanisms in digital heritage engagement.

INTRODUCTION: How do users develop deep psychological bonds with digital heritage environments in the absence of physical embodiment? Prior research has often conflated sensory arousal with cognitive identification. Guided by dual-process theory, we propose that digital heritage appropriation operates through two functionally dissociated pathways: a fast, hedonic route (System 1) driven by sensory stimulation and a slow, reflective route (System 2) driven by meaning-making. METHODS: We employed a multi-factor analytical design integrating unstructured semantic analysis with structured psychol

Intentional Insulin Omission (Diabulimia) in Patients with Insulin-Dependent Diabetes: An Eating Disorder? A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Intentional insulin omission (IIO), commonly referred to as diabulimia, is a high-risk behavioural phenomenon observed mainly in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). Defined as the deliberate reduction or omission of insulin to influence body weight, IIO lies at the intersection of metabolic management and eating disorder psychopathology. Despite serious health risks, including diabetic ketoacidosis, microvascular complications, and increased mortality, it remains under-recognised due to stigma, diagnostic ambiguity, and overlap with routine

Psychological Vulnerability During Pregnancy and Its Obstetric Consequences: A Multidimensional Approach.

Background/Objectives: Maternal depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and resilience are recognized determinants of perinatal health, yet routine psychological screening is still uncommon in Romanian obstetric practice. This study examined how these four psychological factors relate to preterm birth, gestational hypertension, intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR), and low birth weight in primiparous women. Methods: In a cross-sectional study at a tertiary maternity center in Timișoara (February 2024-February 2025), 240 women at 20-28 weeks' gestation completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depres

Co-Developmental Trajectories of Specific Anxiety Symptoms from Middle Childhood to Early Adolescence: Associations with Psychological Well-Being and Academic Achievement.

Different types of specific anxiety symptoms commonly co-occur but also display distinct developmental trajectories over time in children and adolescents. Nevertheless, little is known about the co-developmental trajectories of specific anxiety symptoms among youth during the transition into adolescence and how identified trajectories are associated with important psychological and academic outcomes. This study thus aimed to determine the (a) heterogeneous co-developmental trajectories of five specific anxiety symptoms (generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, social anxiety, school anxiety, a

The Interplay Between Sex-Biased Parenting Attitudes and Children's Gender Nonconformity in the Psychological Adjustment of School-Age Children.

Research on parental attitudes toward children's gender-related behaviors suggests that parents often treat boys and girls differently and apply varying degrees of pressure on children to conform to traditional gender norms. These pressures can negatively affect children's psychological adjustment. Compared to their cisgender peers, gender-diverse children tend to experience greater psychosocial challenges. In the present study, 1411 parents of children aged 6-12 completed questionnaires including the Italian adaptation of the Sex-Biased Parenting Scale (SB-PIQ), which assesses parental attitu

Social ties and social identification: Influences on well-being in young adults.

Research highlights the positive impact of social connectedness on subjective well-being. In this paper, we test a model in which an identity-based mechanism links a structural form of connectedness (significant social ties) with two psychological well-being outcomes, life satisfaction and self-esteem. Using data from the LIVES Longitudinal Lausanne Youth Study (LIVES-LOLYS, N = 422), a longitudinal mediation path model tests direct and indirect effects, via the strength of social identification, of the number of significant social ties in two life domains (friends and family) on life satisfac

The desire to belong: Social identification as a predictor of treatment outcome in social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Perception of personal identity cannot be separated from the perception of the social context and one's social identity. Full involvement in group psychotherapy may require not only the awareness of personal impairment, but also social identification. The aim of the current study was to examine the association between social identification and symptom improvement in group-based psychotherapy. METHOD: 169 participants received 12 sessions of group-based cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder. Social identification, the extent to which a person identifies with those

Latent profiles of oral health-related quality of life in temporomandibular disorders: implications for nurse-led stratified care.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common chronic orofacial pain conditions that substantially impair oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The multidimensional burden of TMD, involving pain, functional limitation, psychological distress, and maladaptive behaviors, is highly heterogeneous. However, nursing practice lacks empirically derived frameworks that support early risk stratification and profile-informed, nurse-led care. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary TMD specialty clinic between February 2024 and August 2025. A total of 515 adults

Influence of the hiking tourscape on hikers' psychological restoration: the distinct mediating roles of place dependence and place identity.

BACKGROUND: Hiking restoration may be shaped not only by exposure to nature but also by the atmospheric, interpersonal, and activity-related features encountered along a route. This study examined how four dimensions of hiking tourscape, namely natural dimension, atmosphere dimension, hospitality culture, and experiential activities, were associated with psychological restoration. It further investigated whether place dependence and place identity provided distinct mediating pathways. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 452 hikers at two hiking destinations in Zunyi, China. T
