Early pathological gambling in co-occurrence with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia: a case report.

We have comprehensively documented a case of semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (sv-PPA) presenting with early-onset pathological gambling (PG). While a growing number of studies have shown the presence of behavioral alterations in patients with sv-PPA, PG has been observed only in the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bv-FTD). To date, no case of PG with the co-occurrence of prominent semantic deficits at the onset of the disease has been reported in the literature. Impulse disorders at onset may wrongly lead to a misdiagnosis (ie, psychiatric disorders). Therefore,

Eating disorders and depression: is there a serotonin connection?

Central serotonin pathways modulate eating patterns, and may also participate in the regulation of behavioral impulsivity and mood. Recent studies lend support to the hypothesis that impaired postingestive satiety in bulimia nervosa is associated with reduced hypothalamic serotonergic responsiveness. Serotonin dysregulation has been implicated in major depression, and may play a role in the increased prevalence of depressive episodes in patients with eating disorders. This review compares evidence for alterations in central serotonin regulation in patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervos

An Empirical Investigation of the Three-Pathway Model and its Contribution to the Gambling Disorder Psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Blaszczynski and Nower (2002) proposed a theoretical model that leads to problem gambling via three pathways: (1) operant conditioning; (2) emotional vulnerability; and (3) impulsivity and psychopathy. In the current investigation, we explored the relationship between these three putative causative dimensions and clinical core features of Gambling Disorder (GD): gambling craving, gambling-related cognitive distortions, gambling (wagering) behavior, and gambling severity. RESULTS: Data on 343 people with disordered gambling were analyzed. Measures representing the three pathways we

Prefrontal cortex dysfunction in patients with suicidal behavior.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal serotonergic neurotransmission has long been demonstrated in suicidal behavior. The dorsal and median raphe nuclei housing the main serotonergic cell bodies and the prefrontal cortex (PFC), particularly the ventral part innervated by the serotonergic system, have therefore been studied extensively in suicidal behavior research. However, only a few studies have described neuropsychological function impairment in suicidal patients. We investigated PFC-related neuropsychological function in patients with suicidal behavior, separating dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC)- and orbitofronta

External validation of a bifactor model of oppositional defiant disorder.

Dimensions of irritability and defiant behavior, though correlated within the structure of ODD, convey separable developmental risks through adolescence and adulthood. Irritability predicts depression and anxiety, whereas defiant behavior is a precursor to antisocial outcomes. Previously we demonstrated that a bifactor model comprising irritability and defiant behavior dimensions, in addition to a general factor, provided the best-fitting structure of ODD symptoms in five large datasets. Herein we extend our previous work by externally validating the bifactor model of ODD using multiple regres

Manipulating levels of uncertainty in a decision-making task for obsessive compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether manipulating levels of uncertainty would influence performance in a decision-making task in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. METHODS: This case-control study compares Beads Task (measuring reflection/decisional impulsivity) performance and trait impulsivity (Short Urgency-Premeditation-Perseverance-Sensation Seeking-Positive Urgency [UPPS-P] Impulsive Behavior Scale) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 65) and non-clinical controls (n = 45). Differences between groups were assessed with the Mann Whitney U test. RESULTS: The obsessi…

Impulsive and compulsive reading comprehension in the prison population.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dyslexia is characterized by reading and writing deficits that persist into adulthood. Dyslexia is strongly associated with academic underachievement, as well as impulsive, compulsive, and criminal behaviors. The aims of this study were to investigate impulsive or compulsive reading comprehension, analyzing the differences in reading errors between two distinct groups -one with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and another with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) and examine their correlation with criminal behavior within a prison population. Human ossicular-joint flexibility transforms the peak amplitude and width of impulsive acoustic stimuli.

The role of the ossicular joints in the mammalian middle ear is still debated. This work tests the hypothesis that the two synovial joints filter potentially damaging impulsive stimuli by transforming both the peak amplitude and width of these impulses before they reach the cochlea. The three-dimensional (3D) velocity along the ossicular chain in unaltered cadaveric human temporal bones (N = 9), stimulated with acoustic impulses, is measured in the time domain using a Polytec (Waldbronn, Germany) CLV-3D laser Doppler vibrometer. The measurements are repeated after fusing one or both of the oss

The Relation Between the Two Factors of Psychopathy and Intimate Partner Aggression.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder that has emerged as a correlate of antisocial, impulsive, and violent behavior, including intimate partner violence (IPV). In the current study, we sought to explore the complex relationship between two factors of psychopathy and IPV perpetration. The Fearlessness-Dominance Factor 1 (PPI-I) assesses the affective-interpersonal traits of psychopathy, whereas the Impulsive-Antisociality Factor II (PPI-II) assesses the behavioral-lifestyle traits of psychopathy. Data from 114 couples was utilized in the current study. When using male self-report of IPV, all f

[Impulse control disorders in borderline and antisocial personality disorder].

A borderline personality disorder is associated with highly impulsive acts that cannot be controlled by cognitive inhibition. In a psychopathic/antisocial personality disorder emotional inhibition of hostile acts is lacking. The patient has a high proclivity for risk-seeking, and is incapable of responding appropriately to punishment. In both disorders, the result is (auto)aggressive behavior. The family doctor must refer such patients to a specialist, when there is an acute danger of self-harm or when a grave functional limitation in the areas of work or interpersonal relationship has persist

Brain serotonin, type II alcoholism and impulsive violence.

There is ample evidence that low CSF 5-HIAA concentration is associated with a tendency to exhibit impulsive violent behavior under the influence of alcohol. This is especially true for subjects who fulfill criteria for psychiatric diagnoses often associated with early onset alcoholism such as antisocial personality disorder and intermittent explosive disorder. Brain serotonin turnover as indicated by CSF 5-HIAA concentration does not correlate with CSF free testosterone concentration. The latter is more strongly associated with outward-directed aggressiveness and lack of socialization than im

A latent modeling approach to genotype-phenotype relationships: maternal problem behavior clusters, prenatal smoking, and MAOA genotype.

This study illustrates the application of a latent modeling approach to genotype-phenotype relationships and gene × environment interactions, using a novel, multidimensional model of adult female problem behavior, including maternal prenatal smoking. The gene of interest is the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene which has been well studied in relation to antisocial behavior. Participants were adult women (N = 192) who were sampled from a prospective pregnancy cohort of non-Hispanic, white individuals recruited from a neighborhood health clinic. Structural equation modeling was used to model a fem

Self-injurious behavior and attempted suicide in purging bulimia nervosa: associations with psychiatric comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Few studies, to date, have investigated the relationship between self-damaging behavior and the presence of comorbid psychiatric diagnoses in eating disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the axis I and II comorbidity in subjects with bulimia nervosa who report self-injurious behavior and/or suicide attempt. METHODS: The subjects were 95 patients with purging type bulimia nervosa who underwent a clinical evaluation assessing the presence of self-injurious behavior and suicide attempts, comorbidity for axis I and II psychiatric disorders and temperament. Characteristics of depressed suicide attempters with remitted substance use disorders.

Substance use disorder (SUD) comorbidity in mood disorders increases suicide risk. Suicide attempters with active SUD appear to have distinct characteristics but little is known whether these characteristics persist during remission and if they are related to different aspects of suicidal behavior. In this study, suicide attempters with a DSM mood disorder and remitted SUD (AT+SUD) (N = 135) were compared to those without lifetime SUD (AT-SUD) (N = 219) in terms of demographic, clinical and suicidal behavioral characteristics. Factor analyses were conducted to generate subjective distress and

Assessing the role of impulsivity in smoking & non-smoking disordered gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Co-morbidity with other addictive behaviors is common in disordered gambling (DG). In particular, tobacco dependence has been found to be among the most prevalent disorders co-morbid with DG. While the extant literature has firmly established the co-occurrence of DG and smoking, there is a paucity of research examining factors that differentiate DGs who smoke from those who do not. OBJECTIVES: To address this empirical gap, the current study tested whether dimensions of trait impulsivity as measured by the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale (positive urgency, negative urgency, lack o…

Kleptomania on the impulsive-compulsive spectrum. Clinical and therapeutic considerations for women.

The current literature regarding kleptomania (KM) is scarce, especially regarding treatment approaches and outcomes. The aims of the present study involved: (1) exploring characteristics of people with KM (with and without co-occurring eating disorders (EDs)); (2) considering KM along an impulsive-compulsive spectrum; and, (3) investigating treatment outcomes in a clinical sample of female patients with KM. The study sample included 150 female participants with either a diagnosis of KM only (n = 13), co-occurring KM and EDs (n = 71), or healthy control individuals (HCs) (n = 66). The KM-only g

To play or not to play: a personal dilemma in pathological gambling.

Research has shown that healthy people would rather avoid losses than gamble for even higher gains. On the other hand, research on pathological gamblers (PGs) demonstrates that PGs are more impaired than non-pathological gamblers in choice under risk and uncertainty. Here, we investigate loss aversion by using a rigorous and well-established paradigm from the field of economics, in conjunction with personality traits, by using self-report measures for PGs under clinical treatment. Twenty pathological gamblers, at the earlier and later stages of clinical treatment, were matched to 20 non-gamble
