Incarcerated Girls, Credibility, and Sexual Misconduct in Juvenile Detention Facilities.

How do correctional authorities and advocates frame girls' sexual victimization during incarceration? Drawing from 34 interviews with Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) personnel, youth advocates for incarcerated girls, and technical assistance providers, I argue that correctional institutions serve as sites where advocates actively construct and contest incarcerated girls' credibility as victims of youth-on-youth and staff-on-youth sexual misconduct. While carceral institutions broadly deem incarcerated girls as legible victims of some sexual abuse, the "victim" label often fails to secure pr…

[High-energy trauma with complex acetabular fracture and incarcerated fragment].

Acetabular fractures with displaced fragments represent a complex intraoperative challenge. This case report describes the successful treatment of an acetabular fracture with native hip dislocation in a 56-year-old man following high-energy trauma. Open reduction and internal fixation using the Kocher-Langenbeck approach was initially unsuccessful due to a posterior wall fragment, necessitating a trochanteric flip osteotomy. The patient developed an avascular necrosis of the femoral head, which is a frequent complication of acetabular fractures associated with hip dislocation. This emphasizes

Gastroesophageal Mucormycosis in an Immunocompetent Host Within Incarcerated Paraesophageal Hernia.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection typically affecting persons with immunocompromise. Gastrointestinal infection of immunocompetent hosts is exceedingly rare. We report a case of gastroesophageal mucormycosis in an immunocompetent host that manifested as gastric necrosis within an incarcerated paraesophageal hernia. The patient was managed with resection, requiring subtotal gastrectomy and esophagectomy, and prompt antifungal treatment, resulting in full recovery.

Serial Mass Screening for Tuberculosis Among Incarcerated Persons in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: An active search for tuberculosis cases through mass screening is widely described as a tool to improve case detection in hyperendemic settings. However, its effectiveness in high-risk populations, such as incarcerated people, is debated. METHODS: Between 2017 and 2021, 3 rounds of mass screening were carried out in 3 Brazilian prisons. Social and health questionnaires, chest X-rays, and Xpert MTB/RIF were performed. RESULTS: More than 80% of the prison population was screened. Overall, 684 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were diagnosed. Prevalence across screening rounds was not

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the experiences of incarcerated pregnant people.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted incarcerated populations, yet few studies have investigated the specific effects on incarcerated pregnant people. This study compares pregnant people's experiences of pregnancy and parenting in prison before and during the pandemic in order to explore the impacts of COVID-19 on this population. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with pregnant people at a state prison as part of a larger study on pregnant people's experiences during incarceration. Interviews explored participants' experiences and decision-making relate…

Exploring Reentry Concerns of Incarcerated Individuals with Severe Mental Illness.

Little is known about the factors and circumstances that relate to how incarcerated individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) view their own needs upon reentry and their ability to meet them. In this study, 101 imprisoned adults with SMI rated their level of concern over meeting their basic needs and obtaining services following incarceration. Greater reentry concern was predicted by anticipated barriers to psychological care and increased psychological distress. When participants were asked what factors concerned them most, 51% identified housing, 41% financial concerns, and 39% obtaining…

Accuracy of Ophthalmology Clinic Follow-Up in the Incarcerated Patient Population.

Purpose  Incarcerated patients represent a uniquely vulnerable population in the outpatient ophthalmology setting, and the reliability of follow-up in this group is undetermined. Methods  This was a retrospective, observational chart review of consecutive incarcerated patients evaluated at the ophthalmology clinic of a single academic medical center between July 2012 and September 2016. For each encounter the following were recorded: patient age, gender, incarcerated status at the time of encounter (a subset of patients had encounters before/after incarceration), interventions performed, follo…

Incarcerated Umbilical Hernia Following Therapeutic Paracentesis in a Cirrhotic Patient.

Umbilical hernia is a relatively common complication developing in patients with liver cirrhosis with recurrent ascites. Abdominal paracentesis is considered the mainstay procedure to manage refractory ascites and to diagnose spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Incarceration of umbilical hernia is a rare but serious adverse event following therapeutic paracentesis that requires prompt management. We describe a case of an incarcerated umbilical hernia following paracentesis requiring surgical repair in a cirrhotic patient.

Incarcerated left paraduodenal hernia case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Left paraduodenal hernia is an internal herniation that develops due to anomalous fetal development. If incarcerated, it becomes an unusual cause of acute abdomen. CASE REPORT: This case report presents an uncommon case of a 39-year-old man with acute abdominal pain with vomiting. The patients medical history included recurrent subileous events and Crohn´s disease in long-term remission. CT scan of abdominal cavity indicated a possible mechanical obstruction of small bowel loops in the upper left abdominal quadrant. Incarcerated left paraduodenal herniation was identified during

Clinical characteristics and pregnancy outcomes of cases with an incarcerated gravid uterus.

This study aimed to clarify the appropriate management of gravid uterus incarceration through a retrospective analysis of 10 women with an incarcerated gravid uterus who delivered at our hospital between 2000 and 2019. The incidence of an incarcerated gravid uterus was one in 2000 cases. Nine cases were diagnosed during pregnancy (15-30 gestational weeks) and one during caesarean section (performed at 37 gestational weeks on suspicion of placenta previa). Two women underwent manual reduction at 19 and 20 gestational weeks, respectively; the procedure failed in one case, and intrauterine foetal…

Incarcerated Colonoscope in a Left Inguinal Hernia During Diagnostic Colonoscopy.

Colonoscope entrapment in an inguinal hernia is rare and few cases have been described in the literature. We present a 54-year-old patient who underwent a diagnostic colonoscopy which was complicated by incarceration of the colonoscope in a left inguinal hernia. This rare complication occurs more frequently during withdrawal, and our case was unique, given the incarceration of the colonoscope occurred during the insertion phase. Recognizing this scenario is very important to immediately proceed with general anesthesia and surgical consultation for successful nonoperative hernia reduction and c…
