Amino acid responses to dietary intake in the first 72 hours of life.

Plasma free amino acid concentrations were measured in cord blood and at 24, 48, and 72h of age in term infants who were either breastfed or fed a whey- or casein-predominant standard term-infant formula. There was a significant initial decrease in the concentrations of almost all amino acids compared with cord blood. Statistically significant effects of the type of feeding were observed in the concentrations of methionine, cystine, tyrosine, alanine, and p-serine; similarly, significant effects of postnatal age were noted in the concentrations of all amino acids with the exception of cystine.…

Killing activity of microwaves in milk.

The killing activity of microwaves of 2450 MHz frequency and 600 W power on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter sakazakii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Mycobacterium terrae and poliomyelitis vaccine-virus suspended in five infant formula preparations was investigated. The samples were brought to the boil (85-100 s depending on milk type). They had reached average temperatures of 82-93 degrees C at this point. Most of the vegetative organisms were killed. In those samples where growth was still detectable after microwave treatment, a signifi…

[Otorhinolaryngologic diseases during lactation-which medications are compatible with breastfeeding?].

Breastmilk is well established as the best source of nutrition for infants. Any interruption to breastfeeding comes with risks such as mastitis, decreased breastmilk supply, infant bottle refusal, and infant allergic reaction if formula is used. The majority of common medications used in general otolaryngology are safe for breastfeeding patients. Insufficient knowledge can lead to clinicians and patients alike being concerned about continued breastfeeding, resulting in interruption or cessation of breastfeeding. On the other hand, much-needed treatment is often withheld for fear of putting the

Tolerance to glucose polymers in malnourished infants with diarrhea and disaccharide intolerance.

The response of infants with diarrhea and lactose intolerance to feedings containing soy protein and sucrose (Sobee), and/or to a carbohydrate free formula (RCF), to which glucose polymers (GP) were added, was assessed in twenty patients. They all were less than ten months of age and had varying degrees of malnutrition. Eleven had acute diarrhea and nine had chronic diarrhea. None of them had classical enteropathogenic strains and parasites in the stools. All had lactose intolerance when feedings were begun with cow's milk formula and some also had sucrose intolerance when fed sucrose containi

Preterm Birth International Collaborative Australasia Branch: Expert Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of Neonatal Lactose Intolerance (2025).

UNLABELLED: This consensus aims to standardize the diagnosis and management of neonatal lactose intolerance (LI). A multidisciplinary working group was established under the auspices of the Preterm Birth International Collaborative (Australasia Branch). The development process included a comprehensive literature review of databases, which identified 61 publications. Recommendations were formulated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation system for evidence evaluation. A modified Delphi method was used to achieve consensus. The consensus establishes that neo

Supplementary feeding and jaundice in newborns.

In a survey it was found that the majority of full-term breast fed infants receive supplementary feeds of water, dextrose solution or infant formula during the first few days of life. Breast fed babies receiving water or dextrose supplements had higher plasma bilirubins on the sixth day of life than bottle fed infants. Supplementation with water or dextrose did not reduce the hyperbilirubinaemia of term, breast fed infants. Since it may prejudice the establishment of breast feeding, we suggest that the practice is abandoned.

Preparation of Human Milk Substitute Fat by Physical Blending and Its Quality Evaluation.

Human milk is the benchmark for formulating infant formula, the latter serving as a substitute when breastfeeding is not possible. Nevertheless, the lipid composition and structure of commercially available infant formulas still differ from those of human milk fat. Accordingly, this paper employs a computational-experimental framework to optimize formulations of prepared lipid (PF). The quality of the optimized product was further validated by analyzing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), color, lipid oxidation indicators, and oxidative stability. The results show that a total of 43 fatty acids…

Protective effect of breastfeeding on recurrent cough in adulthood.

RATIONALE: Breastfeeding protects from respiratory infections in early life but its relationship to recurrent cough and other respiratory outcomes in adult life is not well established. METHODS: Infant feeding practices were assessed prospectively in the Tucson Children's Respiratory Study, a non-selected birth cohort and categorised into formula from birth or introduced <1 month, formula introduced ≥1 to <4 months and exclusive breastfeeding for ≥4 months. Infant feeding was assessed as an ordinal variable representing an increasing dose of breastmilk across the three categories. Recurrent c

Acrodermatitis enteropathica-like eruption during treatment of maple syrup urine disease: report of one case.

We describe a Chinese infant with maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) who had acrodermatitis enteropathica-like skin manifestations, edema, anemia, and diarrhea due to inadequate intake of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). A BCAA supplementation resulted in resolution of the eruption. This observation suggested the importance of monitoring plasma amino acids' levels for infants with metabolic disease on special formula.

Newborn feeding recommendations and practices increase the risk of development of overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity among infants less than 2 years of age has increased by more than 60% over the last three decades. Obese infants and toddlers are at an increased risk for staying overweight into adolescence and adulthood. Metabolic programming has been demonstrated in animal models whereby early life feeding habits result in life-long changes in hormone balance and metabolism. Our study explores if newborn over-nutrition on the first day of life (DOL1) is associated with risk for future overweight and obesity in childhood. METHODS: Retrospective chart data was collected

A Pilot Study of Mothers' Breastfeeding Experiences in Infants With Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

BACKGROUND: Despite the recognized importance of human milk (HM) use, breastfeeding is often discouraged for infants with cleft lip and/or palate because of their anatomical abnormalities. Poor weight gain may require formula for calorie supplementation. Stresses associated with caring for infants with cleft lip/palate may decrease rates of HM provision to these infants. PURPOSE: This study investigates the experiences of mothers of infants with cleft lip/palate (CL/P) to determine choices and factors associated with providing HM to their infants. METHODS: A retrospective telephone survey wa

Renal excretion of calcium and phosphorus in premature infants with incipient late metabolic acidosis.

BACKGROUND: Premature infants receiving alimentation with cow milk-based formulas run a considerably high risk of incipient late metabolic acidosis, an early stage developing of manifest late metabolic acidosis. Is bone metabolism involved in pathophysiologic mechanisms characterizing this early stage of retention acidosis? METHODS: Urinary ionography was performed in 10 premature infants with spontaneous development of incipient late metabolic acidosis (indicated by urine pH < 5.4 on 2 consecutive days) and 10 pair-matched premature infants with normal values of urine pH; both groups were re

Bile acids in the serum and duodenal content of newborn infants of different classification.

Total serum bile acids were determined in 83 infants of different classification. In 33 mature infants total bile acids were measured after feeding human milk (n = 17) or formula (Milasan). Statistically significant elevations of total bile acids were found on the 14th day of life, if mature infants were formula fed. In low-birth-weight infants appropriate for gestational age total bile acids are not higher on the 8th day of life than in mature infants, but on the 14th day of life the elevations become significant. Low-birth-weight infants small for gestational age and infants suffering from f

[Chylothorax--a rare complication of surgical ligation of patent ductus arteriosus in a premature infant-a case report].

A case of left sided chylothorax in preterm infant is reported. The chylothorax was a complication of ligation of patent ductus arteriosus. Treatment consisted of parenteral nutrition, pleural taps, drainage of pleural cavity, mechanical ventilation and replacement of immunoprotein losses. When the lymph effusion reduced, enteral nutrition was started with a formula containing medium chain triglycerides. Treatment of this patient was successful.

Gastroesophageal Reflux in Infants and Children: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Gastroesophageal reflux is a common physiologic event in infants in which gastric contents pass from the stomach into the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux may be asymptomatic or cause regurgitation or "spit up." This occurs daily in approximately 40% of infants. Symptoms often begin before 8 weeks of life, peak at approximately 4 months of age, and usually resolve by 1 year. The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux is 2% to 8% in children and adolescents. Family physicians should reassure parents that gastroesophageal reflux is self-limited, not pathologic, and does not warrant routine test

Atypical presentation of a common condition.

Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) presents a wide range of clinical manifestations. Although gastrointestinal symptoms are common, they are not always present. In this report, we present two cases of infants with atypical CMPA presentations. Case 1 involves a male newborn who was admitted with polyarthritis and a target-shaped rash, while case 2 features a female newborn who presented with soft swelling of extremities. Both infants had recently started using infant formula, which raised CMPA's suspicion. An extensively hydrolyzed formula (eHF) was introduced, resulting in the resolution of sym…
