BACKGROUND: Sepsis commonly complicates the clinical course of critically ill very low birth weight infants, with as many as 30% developing hospital-acquired bacteremia. The tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) -- 308 G/A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is associated with adverse outcome in septic adult patients.
METHODS: One hundred seventy-three mechanically ventilated very low birth weight infants were genotyped for the TNF-alpha -- 308 G/A SNP.
RESULTS: One hundred twenty (69%) infants were homozygous GG, 45 (26%) were heterozygous AG and 8 (5%) were homozygous AA; 2 of 120 (2%)

In an international multicenter trial infants with clinical and radiological signs of severe RDS (age 2-15 h, birthweight 700-2,000 g, mechanical ventilation, FiO2 greater than or equal to 0.6, no complicating disease) were randomized to receive either a single dose (n = 176) or up to three subsequent doses (n = 167) of a natural porcine surfactant (Curosurf). Using a logistic regression model, the effects of therapy, birthweight, sex, hospital and other clinical factors on survival and various outcome parameters were evaluated. Mortality (13 vs. 21%, p less than 0.05) and the incidence of pne

BACKGROUND: The avoidable causes of infant mortality should be identified, and interventions should be made to improve the infant mortality rate. The cause of infant deaths should be assessed in both medical and social contexts.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the medical causes of infant mortality by verbal autopsy and its determinants in two rural blocks of the Khordha district of Odisha and assess the pathway of care and delay in seeking care for the illness preceding infant death using the three-delay model.
DESIGN: We conducted this community-based matched case-control study to identi…

PURPOSE: In the United States, stillbirths (fetal deaths ≥ 20 weeks' gestation) are now more common than infant deaths. Nationally available data are limited, and little is known about women's experiences around the time of a loss. The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), a state-based survey of women with a recent live birth, could be expanded to include women who experienced a stillbirth. We aimed to determine whether women with a recent stillbirth would be amenable to a PRAMS-like survey.
METHODS: Eligible women were Georgia residents aged ≥18 years with a reported stillbir

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality is a critical indicator of a nation's healthcare system and social well-being. This study explores trends and factors associated with mortality rates for three leading causes of infant death: congenital malformations, deformations, and chromosomal abnormalities; disorders related to short gestation and low birth weight, not elsewhere classified; and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
METHODS: Utilizing the CDC WONDER (CDC Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) database, we conducted a retrospective observational analysis of infant mortality rates a…

INTRODUCTION: globally, almost half of all deaths in children under five years of age occur among neonates. We investigated the predictors of mortality within 28 days among preterm infants at a tertiary hospital in Lusaka, Zambia.
METHODS: we reviewed admission records linked to birth, mortality, and hospital discharge from 1st January 2018 to 30th September 2019. Information was retrieved with a follow-up period of 28 days post-delivery to discharge/mortality. We used the Weibull hazards regression to establish the best predictor model for mortality among the neonates.
RESULTS: a total of 3

INTRODUCTION: Many newborns with pulmonary atresia/intact ventricular septum require intervention to establish pulmonary flow and sufficient cardiac output. The resulting haemodynamic changes are not well characterised and may have unintended consequences.
METHODS: This is a 30-year (1988-2018) retrospective study of patients with pulmonary atresia intact ventricular septum.
RESULTS: Eighty-nine patients were included, and median follow-up was 8 years. Fifty-five per cent had coronary sinusoids and 27% had right ventricular-dependent coronary circulation. Most patients were managed with surg
