AYAs' online information and eHealth needs: A comparison with healthcare professionals' perceptions.

BackgroundAdolescents and young adults (AYAs) diagnosed with cancer fulfill their cancer-related information needs often via the Internet. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) have a crucial role in guiding patients in finding appropriate online information and eHealth sources, a role that is often overlooked. Misperceptions of AYAs' needs by HCPs may lead to suboptimal guidance. We aimed to examine the extent to which AYAs' online information and eHealth needs corresponded with HCPs' perceptions of these needs.MethodsTwo cross-sectional online surveys (AYAs, n = 299; HCP, n = 80) on online informa

Flexible usage of object and global scene information during human scene categorization.

The human ability to categorize scenes has been related to the usage of both object and global scene information. In three experiments (carried out in 2024), we compared the utility of these sources of information and assessed the time course of their usage by reducing scenes to single objects or visualizations of global scene information (textures). Experiment 1 showed that both types of information were of comparable utility under controlled viewing conditions and could be used concurrently. However, a simple combination of object and global scene information was not sufficient to explain fa

A comparative study on the credibility of ischemic stroke treatment information on social media platforms: evidence from Weibo and REDnote.

BACKGROUND: Social media is a key channel for public health information, but its open nature leads to mixed quality of information regarding Ischemic Stroke (IS) treatment, which may mislead patient decisions. This study aimed to systematically compare IS treatment information published by professional and lay sources on two major Chinese social media platforms, Weibo and REDnote, in terms of content, engagement, and quality. METHODS: This study employed computational social science and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to analyze posts from four sources (Weibo-Pro, Weibo-Lay, REDn

Empowering Third-Year Medical Students to Detect Bias and Medical Misinformation Online via Experiential Learning of "Lateral Reading," A Fact-Checker's Technique.

Problem: Misleading health information is detrimental to public health. Even physicians can be misled by biased health information; however, medical students and physicians are not taught some of the most effective techniques for identifying bias and misinformation online. Intervention: Using the stages of Kolb's experiential learning cycle as a framework, we aimed to teach 117 third-year students at a United States medical school to apply a fact-checking technique for identifying bias and misinformation called "lateral reading" through a 50-minute learning cycle in a 90-minute class. Health literacy in a community with low levels of education: findings from Chakaria, a rural area of Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) helps individuals to make effective use of available health services. In low-income countries such as Bangladesh, the less than optimum use of services could be due to low levels of HL. Bangladesh's health service delivery is pluralistic with a mix of public, private and informally trained healthcare providers. Emphasis on HL has been inadequate. Thus, it is important to assess the levels of HL and service utilization patterns. The findings from this study aim to bridge the knowledge gap. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data for this study came from a cross-section

Understanding consumer preferences for communication channels to create consumer-directed health promotion efforts in psychiatric rehabilitation settings.

People with serious mental illnesses experience increased rates of physical illnesses. Drop-in centers and psychosocial rehabilitation programs can serve as important settings for health promotion efforts, but such efforts should utilize communication strategies that are used by consumers and are perceived to be reliable. Focus groups involving 23 consumers at drop-in centers in Philadelphia were conducted to assess the perceived usefulness of health information from a variety of sources. Consumers especially liked getting information from other people, including health care professionals, fri

Matching the Genotype in Resolution: Innovative Ways of Phenotype Capture.

Social and spatial context are important determinants of morbidity and mortality. However, there is little clarity about the role of context for kidney disease specifically, particularly before the end stage. Meanwhile, research clarifying the clinical, cellular, molecular, and genetic causes of kidney disease is accelerating considerably. We postulate that without contextual information, even the most detailed biomedical information cannot fully capture the factors that ultimately drive the development and progression of kidney disease. The Nephrotic Syndrome Study Network is integrating deta

What information patients require on graduated compression stockings.

Graduated compression stockings are used prophylactically on a variety of patients within acute hospitals. Anecdotal evidence suggests patients have a limited understanding of this treatment. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore patients' experiences of compression stockings and to ascertain perceptions of their use. Information was gathered using telephone interviews from a sample of 12 adults who had been patients within the past 2 months, and who had worn compression stockings for more than 48 hours. The results showed that patients received little or no information from healthc

Exploring complementary medicine practitioners' attitudes towards the use of an immunization decision aid, and its potential acceptability for use with clients to reduce vaccine related decisional conflict.

While Australia boasts a high immunization rate, geographical pockets of low uptake still challenge herd immunity on a community level. For some parents, concerns about immunization lead to distrust of conventional sources of vaccine information and complementary medicine (CM) practitioners may be more readily trusted as a source of information about vaccines. Decision aids are common educational resources that are developed to support informed decision making. We interviewed CM practitioners to explore their attitudes to immunization decision aids in general and the acceptability of recommend

Information content and interpretation of CSD non-trivially depends on array density.

Objective. We aim to determine whether commonly-used current source density (CSD) estimation techniques provide valid results when used with recordings from the latest generation of high-density arrays and how the density affects signal interpretation.Approach.We first develop an analytic formulation for the contributions of Gaussian current sources to an estimated CSD as a function of current source position and array density. We then simulate local field potential recordings in a biophysically detailed model of a subvolume of rat somatosensory cortex, and compare estimated current source dens
