Mathematical models are used to compare the effectiveness of various untested, unused, and undeveloped methods for controlling canine and human zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL), including insecticides, vaccines, killing serologically positive and sick dogs, and drugs. For given percentage changes in control parameters, insecticides are the most effective control method. Where transmission occurs peridomestically and vectors are accessible to treatment, as in parts of tropical America, insecticides are expected to reduce the incidence of human ZVL even more effectively than they reduce the

The object of this study was to (a) reduce the prevalence of sleeping sickness by serological testing, parasitological examination, and treatment of every infected person; (b) determine the maximum acceptable interval between serological surveys; and (c) define the impact of vector control, using monopyramidal non-impregnated traps, on the transmission. For this sero-parasitological survey, the focus in Luba was divided into three zones as follows: Epicentre A (with high prevalence, 27.5%), Epicentre B (with average prevalence, 8.3%), and Peripheral C (with moderate prevalence, 3.0%). Differen

Losses from morbidity and mortality due to anaplasmosis were assessed in beef and dairy cattle of the Red River Plains and south-east areas of Louisiana. The cost of treatment and prevention of anaplasmosis and losses in milk production and those due to deaths or culling were valued at $0.5 million for the year 1983 in these two areas. The cost of prevention included the use of tetracyclines in feed and salt-mineral supplements, injectable tetracycline, vaccination and an estimated 10% of the cost of insecticidal ear tags, sprays, pour-on applications and dust bags. The remainder of these cost

It has been suggested that hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) serves as a key regulatory factor in insect metabolism remodelling under hypoxia, in which lipid metabolism appears to play an important role. However, the underlying mechanism remains incompletely understood. In this paper, the function of HIF1α in regulating lipid metabolism under hypoxia in Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), a typical stored-product insect, was investigated. Based on the amplification and cloning, the sequence of the CcHIF1α gene was analysed and found to be highly conserved throughout evolution.

Curcumin, a plant-polyphenolic compound, has been reported to induce autophagy and autophagic cell death in insect cells but its impact on cell cycle regulation is not well understood. In this study, we investigated the short-term effects of curcumin on the cell proliferation, cell cycle progression and autophagy-associated cellular responses in the Sf9 insect cells of Spodoptera frugiperda. Short-term treatment of Sf9 cells with low-dose curcumin (5-15 µg/mL) resulted in a continuous decrease in cell proliferation in a dose and time dependent manner. Flow cytometric analysis showed a signific

Understanding how multiple stressors interact is essential for predicting insect performance under global change. Although pesticide toxicity is well-established to be temperature-dependent, the physiological mechanisms underlying these interactions remain poorly understood. Insects often display stage- and sex-specific sensitivities to environmental pressures, suggesting complex energetic trade-offs across their life cycles. Copper-based fungicides, such as Bordeaux mixture, are widely used to control fungal diseases but can stress non-target insects. Here, we experimentally examined how Bord

BACKGROUND: Triatomine control campaigns have traditionally consisted of spraying the inside of houses with pyrethroid insecticides. However, exposure to sublethal insecticide doses after the initial application is a common occurrence and may have phenotypic consequences for survivors. Here, using Triatoma infestans (the main vector of Chagas disease in the Southern Cone of South America) as a model species, we quantified the effects of exposure to a sublethal dose of pyrethroid insecticide on wing morphology. We tested if the treatment (i) induced a plastic effect (change in the character mea

The management of myiasis in livestock has been an example of the success of modern chemical approaches for parasite control, yet in some cases remains extremely intractable, requiring the development of novel strategies. In addition, the growing and urgent need to develop integrated strategies that enhance the sustainability of livestock production systems drives the search for new techniques [see Int. J. Parasitol. 29 (1999) 7].The following summary represents a synthesis of a symposium presented at the 19th International Conference of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary

Insect-borne plant pathogens pose a major threat to global agriculture and cause substantial economic losses. As natural vectors, insects display high tolerance to infection by plant pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and phytoplasmas, while exhibiting no significant pathological effects. This suggests that they have evolved effective strategies to maintain immune homeostasis, thereby restricting pathogen infection to nonpathogenic levels. In this review, we summarize recent advances in understanding these immune mechanisms, including Toll, JAK-STAT, RNA interference, autophagy, apoptosis

Effective management of the fruit pest Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) requires new strategies to reduce insecticide use and minimize their negative impact on beneficial organisms. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Saccharomycopsis vini supernatant, a formulation that retains attractive cues while offering improved storage and handling conditions compared to the non-sterile yeast suspension. In recent years, yeast-based attract-and-kill approaches have shown strong potential, with Hanseniaspora uvarum widely studied as an attractant. However, little attention has

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes are vectors for numerous viral diseases, including dengue, zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Therefore, underscoring the urgent need for eco-friendly alternatives to combat insecticide resistance and the scarcity of effective vaccines. Entomopathogenic fungi present a sustainable alternative to chemical insecticides; however, their widespread application is limited by their relatively low virulence.
RESULTS: Here, we investigated the immunological interactions between Metarhizium anisopliae and Aedes albopictus, demonstrating that fungal infection significantly

The control of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) vector is often based on the application of chemical residual insecticide. However, this strategy has not been effective. The continuing search for an appropriate vector control may include the use of biological control. This study evaluates the effects of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum on Lutzomyia longipalpis. Five concentrations of the fungus were utilized, 1 x 10(4) to 1 x 10(8) conidia/ml, accompanied by controls. The unhatched eggs, larvae and dead adults previously exposed to fungi were sown to reisolate the fungi and analysis o

The continuous epidemic infestation of horse chestnuts by C. ohridella is a serious aesthetic and economic problem in urban environments. The aim of the presented studies was therefore to develop control measures which meet the special needs of urban plant protection. Removal of infested leaves in autumn and appropriate disposal of the leaflitter is the only practicable measure to reduce infestation levels so far. Another two methods, which are currently in an experimental stage, had an impact on the leafminer populations. A gelformulated combination of the C. ohridella-pheromone with a contac
