The trade-offs of co-ruminating with friends: A profile analysis.

Adolescents' co-ruminating with friends has been tied to trade-offs: having higher quality friendships but experiencing more depressive symptoms. To determine if individual youth experience these trade-offs, we applied a person-centered approach to Swedish adolescents' self-reports of co-rumination with friends, depressive symptoms, and friend support (n = 2767, aged 12-16, 52% girls; 88% Swedish). We found four latent profiles: Two high in co-rumination and two low. One high co-rumination profile exhibited the proposed trade-offs; the other reported high friendship support and fewer depressiv

People conform to social norms when gambling with lives or money.

Many consider moral decisions to follow an internal "moral compass", resistant to social pressures. Here we examine how social influence shapes moral decisions under risk, and how it operates in different decision contexts. We employed an adapted Asian Disease Paradigm where participants chose between certain losses/gains and probabilistic losses/gains in a series of moral (lives) or financial (money) decisions. We assessed participants' own risk preferences before and after exposing them to social norms that are generally risk-averse or risk-seeking. Our results showed that participants robus

Couples' Coping Strategies with Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation: A Qualitative Dyadic Study.

A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a mechanical device that treats advanced heart failure. Patients coping with an LVAD need extensive instrumental and medical support, which is usually provided by the spouse. Therefore, it seems that dyadic coping strategies play a crucial role as either mitigators or hinderers of couples' illness management in the context of LVADs. The aim of this research was to formulate a typology of dyadic coping strategies applied by these couples, as unfolded in their mutual and individual subjective experiences. The research was performed in collaboration with

Feelings of loneliness and meaning in life in subjects with Asperger's syndrome: a pilot study.

Subjects with Asperger's syndrome without intellectual disabilities have significant difficulties in establishing social relationships despite their IQ being within the normal range. One of the effects of social deficit is depression. The question arises whether loneliness and dimensions of meaning in life correlate with the severity of depression and whether the average severity of depression, loneliness and dimensions of meaning in life differentiate the following groups: people with Asperger's syndrome and depression, people with Asperger's syndrome without depression, people with depressio

Measuring empathy in groups with high schizotypy: Psychometric evaluation of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index.

Empathy is integral for interpersonal interactions and formation and maintenance of a strong social network. There is wide agreement that empathy is a multidimensional construct, and it is commonly measured with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). The IRI is used widely across healthy and clinical populations, yet insufficient evidence exists on whether the IRI is appropriate for use in groups characterized by high levels of schizotypy. This study sought to examine the factor structure and psychometric characteristics of the IRI when used in a sample of participants with high schizotypy.

Interpersonal Emotion Dynamics in Couples With Somatic Symptom Disorder: Dyadic Coherence in Facial Temperature During Emotional Interactions.

OBJECTIVE: Disturbances in emotional processes are commonly reported in patients with a somatic symptom disorder (SSD). Although emotions usually occur in social interactions, little is known about interpersonal emotion dynamics of SSD patients during their actual emotional encounters. This study examined physiological coherence (linkage) between SSD patients and their partners, and in healthy couples during their emotional interactions. Secondarily, we explored group-level relationships between participants' and their partners' subjective affect. METHODS: Twenty-nine romantic couples (16 hea

Attachment insecurities and under-commitment in distressed couples: The role of positive and negative partner behaviors.

Research has rarely considered intermediate variables in the association between attachment insecurities and relationship commitment. Based on attachment theory and Rusbult's Investment Model, we tested whether positive and negative partner behaviors explain this association in 91 distressed couples undergoing therapy. Path analyses based on the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model revealed that individuals with attachment avoidance reported perceiving fewer positive behaviors from their partner, which was associated with their own higher under-commitment. Partners of individuals with avoidance

The role of positive relationship events in romantic attachment avoidance.

Motivated by the Attachment Security Enhancement Model (Arriaga et al., 2018), the present research investigated the associations between positive relationship experiences and romantic attachment avoidance in three dyadic studies that combined multiple methods, including daily diaries, laboratory observations, and longitudinal follow-ups. Frequency of daily positive relationship events (but not external positive events) during a 21-day diary period predicted declines in romantic attachment avoidance (but not anxiety) from pre- to post-diary in fledgling couples (Study 1) and newlyweds (Study 2

Friendships in Children with Williams Syndrome: Parent and Child Perspectives.

Although children with Williams syndrome (WS) are strongly socially motivated, many have friendship difficulties. The parents of 21 children with WS and 20 of the children themselves participated in a semi-structured interview about the children's friendships. Parents reported that their child had difficulties sustaining friendships and low levels of interaction with peers. Barriers to friendships included difficulties with play and self-regulating behaviour. However, there was within-group variability, with a small number of children reported to have strong friendships. While parents reported

'The Chronicle of Nightmares': Emergency Nurses' Frontstage and Backstage Communication in the Emergency Department.

Effective emergency nurse-patient (EN) communication and ENs' communication with other healthcare workers have implications for patient outcomes. Effective EN-patient communication informs and empowers patients. This study sought to better understand ENs frontstage and backstage interactions in a metropolitan emergency department (ED). The researcher engaged in participant observation of 15 different ENs' healthcare interactions with patients and other healthcare workers in the ED for a total of 47 hours and 30 minutes. Iterative analysis of field notes builds reveal two key observations. Firs

Sexuality and Gender Issues in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This article reviews relevant literature on sexuality in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Findings reveal a growing awareness of desire for sexual and intimate relationships in individuals with ASD. However, core impairments of ASD lead to difficulties establishing requisite knowledge and skills necessary to attain a healthy sexuality and facilitate relationships. Consequently, individuals with ASD present with increased risk of engaging in inappropriate sexual behaviors and sexual victimization than their typically developing peers. The literature asserts the need to implement

Evaluating interactions between emotion regulation strategies through the interpersonal context of female friends.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing interest in examining how interpersonal relationships may shape associations between emotion regulation (ER) strategies and psychopathology. METHODS: We used multilevel modeling to test if respondents' self-reported intrapersonal ER, friends' self-reported intrapersonal ER, and their interaction were associated with psychopathology in a sample of 120 female friend dyads. RESULTS: Respondents' use of brooding rumination, expressive suppression, and worry were positively associated with respondent psychopathology. Friend reappraisal moderated the association be…

The Effectiveness of Sinking Lid Policies in Reducing Gambling Expenditure.

In many countries, problem gambling is a significant public health concern. Gambling addiction has been linked to poor health, psychological distress, financial difficulties, and strained interpersonal relationships. In New Zealand, problem gambling is estimated to affect over 10% of the population. To minimize harm, the Gambling Act of 2003 was introduced to limit the number of electronic gaming machines in non-casino establishments. Beyond national-level restrictions, local governments were required to adopt gambling policies of their own and review them every three years. One specific polic…

The relationship sabotage scale: an evaluation of factor analyses and constructive validity.

BACKGROUND: Some individuals are no longer entering romantic relationships, others move through relationships too quickly searching for "the one" and making quick assessments of their romantic partners, while others stay in their relationships but "check out" or do not work on their issues. These are conclusions from two studies: (1) an interview with psychologists who specialise in relationship therapy, and (2) an analysis of individuals' lived experiences of relationships. The concept of relationship sabotage can explain these phenomena. However, presently, there is no instrument to conceptu

Spontaneous synchronization of motion in pedestrian crowds of different densities.

Interacting pedestrians in a crowd spontaneously adjust their footsteps and align their respective stepping phases. This self-organization phenomenon is known as synchronization. However, it is unclear why and how synchronization forms spontaneously under different density conditions, or what functional benefit synchronization offers for the collective motion of humans. Here, we conducted a single-file crowd motion experiment that directly tracked the alternating movement of both legs of interacting pedestrians. We show that synchronization is most likely to be triggered at the same density at

Conflict-coparenting spillover: The role of actors' and partners' attachment insecurity and gender.

The current research applied a dyadic perspective to examine conflict-coparenting spillover by examining (a) whether actors' or partners' hostility during couples' conflict discussions predicted greater hostility in a subsequent play activity with their child and (b) whether these actor and partner effects were moderated by two factors that prior theory and research suggest may shape conflict-coparenting spillover: attachment insecurity and parent gender. Cohabiting or married couples were video recorded discussing their most serious conflict while their 4-5-year-old child was in a separate ro

A relationship of sorts: gender and auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Voice hearing has been conceptualized as an interrelational framework, where the interaction between voice and voice hearer is reciprocal and resembles "real-life interpersonal interactions." Although gender influences social functioning in "real-life situations," little is known about respective effects of gender in the voice hearing experience. One hundred seventeen participants with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder took part in a semi-structured interview about the phenomenology of their voices and completed standardized self-rating questionnaires on their beliefs about their most dominant

The impact of upper limb spasticity-correcting surgery on the everyday life of patients with disabling spasticity: a qualitative analysis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the patient perspective of their experiences of daily life after spasticity-correcting surgery for disabling upper limb (UL) spasticity after spinal cord injury (SCI) and stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight patients with UL spasticity resulting from SCI (n= 6) or stroke (n= 2) were interviewed 6-9 months after spasticity-correcting surgery. A phenomenographic approach was used to analyze the interviews. RESULTS: Five themes emerged from the interviews: (1) bodily changes, such as increased muscle strength, range of motion, and reduced muscle-hyp

Do environmental risk factors for the development of psychosis distribute differently across dimensionally assessed psychotic experiences?

Psychotic experiences (PE) are associated with poorer functioning, higher distress and the onset of serious mental illness. Environmental exposures (e.g. childhood abuse) are associated with the development of PE. However, which specific exposures convey risk for each type or dimension of PE has rarely been explored. The Oxford Wellbeing Life and Sleep (OWLS) survey includes 22 environmental risk factors for psychosis and was designed to examine how environmental risks are associated with specific dimensions of PE. Multivariate logistic regression models were fit using these risk factors to pr

Adverse Social Relationships in Childhood: Are there Links with Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Suicidality in Adulthood?

This study aimed to (i) explore the association between perceptions of negative social relationships in childhood with significant others, including peers, guardians and teachers, symptoms of depression and OCD, and suicide behaviors, and (ii) examine whether depression and OCD severity meditated the association between these perceptions and suicide experiences. In total, 783 individuals from the community were invited to complete self-report measures. There were strong associations between perceptions of adverse social relationships in childhood, severity of depression and OCD, and suicide be
