A paralytic ileus is a typical complication of ileocystoplasty of the bladder. In patients with a spinal cord injury, this risk is higher due to a preexisting neurogenic bowel dysfunction. A 15-year-old girl who presented with signs of acute infectious gastroenteritis, just as two members of her family is described. As the patient did not improve, a sigmoidoscopy was performed and the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC) was made. Our hypothesis is that an infection triggered the development of UC. Her paralytic ileus was probably triggered by the increased nitric oxide produced in the macrophages and smooth muscles of the inflamed bowel.

A 60-year-old man who had been receiving dialysis for more than 30 years was admitted for treatment of cellulitis in his right thigh on November 7, 2003. We experienced 66 cases of abdominal aortic repair, which contained 49 cases of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and 17 cases of high leveled arteriosclerotic occlusion (high ASO), since March, 1977 till December, 1985. Operative procedures were 44 cases of Y-graft replacement and 5 cases of tube graft interposition for all of AAA, and Y bypass grafting for high ASO. As early gastrointestinal complications after these repairs, paralytic intestinal ileus was found 9 cases in AAA group and no case in high ASO group. BACKGROUND: Ileostomy closure is associated with a high rate of postoperative morbidity, and adynamic ileus is the most common complication, with an incidence of up to 32%. This complication is associated with delayed initiation of oral diet intake, abdominal distention, prolonged hospital stay, and more significant patient discomfort. The present study aims to evaluate the rectal stimulus with prebiotics and probiotics before ileostomy reversal.

A 78-year-old female underwent a right pneumonectomy for a neuroendocrine tumour. In the early postoperative phase, she developed a paralytic ileus and went on to develop breathlessness and orthostatic desaturation, which characterizes platypnoea-orthodeoxia. She was found to have an intra-atrial shunt on bubble echo, with equal atrial pressures. This was managed by device closure of the atrial connection, following which her condition improved.

RATIONALE: Postoperative ileus with flatulence is a common symptom in patients who have undergone cesarean section, and it can lead to peritonitis and intestinal perforation. However, few previous reports described therapeutic effects of acupuncture in women with flatulence after cesarean delivery. OBJECTIVE: To investigate prenatal ultrasonographic findings associated with megacystis-microcolon-intestinal hypoperistalsis syndrome (MMIHS).
METHODS: A PubMed search was performed using the terms 'MMIHS', 'MMIH' and 'prenatal diagnosis'.
