It has been recognized that Schistosoma mansoni infection causes depression of T-cell responsiveness. In this study we have evaluated whether immunodepression associated to schistosomiasis could be reverted by specific treatment. Intradermal immunization of 229 chronic neuropsychic patients in Gura Ocnitzei Sanatorium, Dîmbovitza County, where a typhoid fever outbreak burst, was performed with a freeze-dried typhoid vaccine, suspended in purified and concentrated tetanic anatoxin. Adverse reactions were minimal and immunologic response, evaluated by laboratory tests, was good, reaching the level of that obtained as a result of classic vaccination methods (subcutaneous antityphoid and intramuscular anti-tetanic). Both after vaccination and also booster O and H agglutinating titers increased 4-7 times and anti-S. typhi.

Soluble antigen preparations were made from Onchocerca volvulus adults recovered from subcutaneous nodules, and from Necator americanus third-stage larvae. Culicoides midges are important as vectors of disease, as an irritant with severe effects on human outdoor activities in certain areas and as the cause of insect bite hypersensitivity in domestic animals (most notably horses). Here we report, for the first time, the confirmation of ovine hypersensitivity to Culicoides midges in Hebridean sheep suffering from seasonal allergic skin disease using intradermal allergen testing. The affected sheep formed 40% of the adults in the small flock, and this indication of a potentially high prevalence of a condition with welfare implications is of concern.

We report the case of a 53-year-old man with solar urticaria (SU) not responding to histamine antagonist therapy. Using intradermal testing with the patient's irradiated serum, we demonstrated that his SU was elicited by visible light only. This type of SU is uncommon, and makes preventive measures such as sun block largely ineffective. However, the patient had an extraordinary response to the treatment with omalizumab. This case report highlights the diagnostic process and the success of omalizumab for the treatment of SU after 16 months of follow-up.

We report the case of anaphylactic reaction to carboxymethylcellulose, a dispersant in corticosteroid preparation and contrast media. Skin prick testing in this patient revealed a positive response to carboxymethylcellulose at a dilution of 1/1000. Anaphylaxis secondary to carboxymethylcellulose has previously been reported. We planned a tuberculin testing in a secondary school, following student exposure to a fellow student suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. A first group of 71 students for whom exposure seemed greater, had an intradermal Mantoux test. Of these 71 students, 18 (25.3%) had a > or = 5 mm reactions; 52 went through a second test three months later, six of whom had a > or = 5 mm reaction. In light of the results of the screening in this first group, the tuberculin testing was offered to a second group of 108 students. A case of anaphylaxis occurring during a general anesthesia is presented. The reaction was severe with bronchospasm and hypotension (grade 2 in the severity of per-operative anaphylactic shock).
