BACKGROUND: Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is a recognised complication of surgery in the neck. The presence of a non-recurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) significantly increases the risks of a nerve injury. Given that NRLNs are strongly associated with vascular abnormalities that can be visualised on preoperative imaging, we describe a case to raise awareness of this association with the aim of reducing the risk of iatrogenic nerve injury.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 61-year-old gentleman was referred by his family doctor with a history of radiating left arm pain and paraesthesia consiste

Female genital mutilation (FGM) was seen in 30 countries, especially in Africa and also in Asia and the Middle East. According to WHO data, Somalia is where FGM is performed most frequently. Our study aimed to evaluate the recordings of patients with FGM who were diagnosed with a traumatic clitoral cyst. We identified the clitoral cyst cases between February 2015 and August 2020. We collected clinical, surgical, sociodemographic, and histopathological details such as age, marital status, patient resume, age at which FGM was performed, complaints, size of the cyst consultation reasons, FGM proc

PURPOSE: To evaluate the correlation between silodosin and intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) and compare it with other a1-adrenergic receptor antagonists (a1-ARAs) and other factors predisposing to IFIS.
METHODS: From the patients who underwent phacoemulsification between 2014 and 2020, we identified all patients who, during their preoperative assessment, reported an a1-ARAs intake (exposed group). These patients were matched utilizing a propensity score matching analysis with an otherwise homogenous group of patients (control group) based on demographics and systemic/ocular comorbid

BACKGROUND: Health outcomes of older subjects with hip fracture (HF) may be negatively influenced by multiple comorbidities and frailty. An integrated multidisciplinary approach (i.e. the orthogeriatric model) is, therefore, highly recommended, but its implementation in clinical practice suffers from the lack of shared management protocols and poor awareness of the problem. The present consensus document has been implemented to address these issues.
AIM: To develop evidence-based recommendations for the orthogeriatric co-management of older subjects with HF.
METHODS: A 20-member Expert Task

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a common spinal disorder that presents with or without cervical myelopathy. Furthermore, there is evidence suggesting that OPLL often coexists with cervical disc hernia (CDH), and that the latter is the more important compression factor. To raise the awareness of CDH in OPLL for spinal surgeons, we performed a retrospective study on 142 patients with radiologically proven OPLL who had received surgery between January 2004 and January 2008 in our hospital. Plain radiograph, three-dimensional computed tomography construction (3D CT),

BACKGROUND: Rectus muscle involvement in thyroid ophthalmopathy is well documented. The inferior rectus is the most frequently involved, followed by the medial, superior, and infrequently the lateral rectus. This study reports involvement of the superior oblique muscle as a contributory cause of restrictive strabismus in patients with thyroid ophthalmopathy.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of four patients with known thyroid ophthalmopathy who presented with incomitant vertical strabismus, A-pattern, overdepression in adduction, underelevation in adduction, and incyclotorsion. All pat

BACKGROUND: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) and distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) are well-recognized treatments to address varus and valgus malalignment, respectively, in the setting of symptomatic unicompartmental arthritis of the tibiofemoral joint. The existing literature is limited in its ability to characterize complications after HTO or DFO procedures.
PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to determine the rate of early (≤90 days) postoperative complications and associated variables from the 15-year experience of a single academic institution.

BACKGROUND Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), also known as abdominal cocoon syndrome (ACS), is a rare pathological entity that is difficult to diagnose. The syndrome can be idiopathic or secondary, and is mainly associated with peritoneal dialysis or abdominal tuberculosis. Patients with EPS can display symptoms of subacute intestinal obstruction or acute symptoms of ileus. We present a case of idiopathic EPS, misdiagnosed as acute appendicitis. Here, we report an unusual presentation of ACS and review the literature to delineate its diagnosis and treatment. CASE REPORT A 63-year-old m

BACKGROUND: A heterotopic dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is sometimes observed in the vicinity of dysplastic neural structures during surgery for open spinal dysraphism; however, it is rarely associated with closed spinal dysraphism. Distinguish from neoplasms by preoperative imaging study is difficult. Although the embryopathogenesis of a heterotopic DRG has been speculated to be migration disorder of neural crest cells from primary neural tube, its details remain unelucidated.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a pediatric case with an ectopic DRG in cauda equina associated with a fatty terminal filum
