OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and short term outcomes of the procedure for prolapsing haemorrhoids (PPH), a relatively new procedure for the treatment of symptomatic haemorrhoids.
METHOD: In 2005, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland set up an online electronic database to audit the indications and outcomes for patients undergoing a PPH procedure.

Celiac disease (CD) has one of the strongest class II HLA associations of any human illness. We used DNA-RFLP typing to study the class II HLA genotypes of celiac disease patients from the West of Ireland, the geographic area with the highest rate of celiac disease in the world. The aim of this survey of community mental handicap nursing in Northern Ireland (NI) was, among other things, to construct a profile of clients of the service as well as to describe selected working practices. A 25-item questionnaire was developed and administered to all 50 community nurses working with people with learning disabilities in NI. The number of responses was 36, giving a rate of 72%. Patients undergoing amputation and who are considered to be suitable for an artificial leg are referred to the Disablement Services Centres (formerly called the Artificial Limb and Appliance Centres). This article reviews the referrals to the 23 centres in England, Wales and Northern Ireland over the five-year period 1981-85. A comparison has been made of the effectiveness of periconceptional vitamin supplementation for the prevention of recurrence of neural tube defects (NTD) in south-east England and Northern Ireland. These areas represent the extremes of birth prevalence of NTD (low and high respectively) within the United Kingdom. The first two cases of indigenous variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in the Republic of Ireland are reported in two men, neither of whom had lived outside Ireland. Both diagnoses were made ante-mortem based on clinical presentation, brain imaging, positive 14-3-3 protein in one case, and tonsillar biopsy. We discuss some of the clinical aspects of vCJD and the significance of these cases in the Irish context.

Etanercept and infliximab are novel biological agents targeted against tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha), a key cytokine in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We report the results of their use over a two year period in 94 patients with severe inflammatory arthritis. This retrospective laboratory-based study investigates the potential for malignant transformation of oral mucosal lesions in a population of 1.6 million. Over the 20-year period there were 745 patients diagnosed with primary intra-oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), 165 patients with dysplasia and 1182 patients with 'non-dysplastic' lesions (epithelial hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis epithelial atrophy, lichen planus and lupus erythematosus). Fifteen families with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease were analysed for coinheritance of the disease and DNA markers flanking the PKD1 locus. Eleven families demonstrated linkage to PKD1 markers. Two families were unlinked to the PKD1 locus (non-PKD1) and in two families the markers were uninformative.
