BACKGROUND: There are few studies to evaluate the association between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and Crohn's disease (CD). We examined this association in a USA-based cohort of patients with CD.
METHODS: We queried the Nationwide Readmission Databases 2018 using the International Classification of Disease, 10th Revision, and Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) codes to identify all adult patients admitted with a diagnosis of CD. Primary outcomes were the prevalence of IDA among patients with CD. Secondary outcomes included inpatient mortality, the length of stay, all-cause 30-day non-elective

Iron deficiency is a widely prevalent finding in patients with heart failure, observed on average in 50% of outpatients and up to 80% of acute patients, regardless of the ejection fraction and the presence of anaemia, being an independent predictor of worst functional capacity and reduced survival. The definition of iron deficiency in heart failure considers the state of chronic inflammation that characterizes the pathology, recognizing a discriminating role for transferrin saturation. The studies conducted so far, which focused on the patient with heart failure with at least moderately reduce

Among different pathomechanisms involved in the development of heart failure, adverse metabolic myocardial remodeling closely related to ineffective energy production, constitutes the fundamental feature of the disease and translates into further progression of both cardiac dysfunction and maladaptations occurring within other organs. Being the component of key enzymatic machineries, iron plays a vital role in energy generation and utilization, hence the interest in whether, by correcting systemic and/or cellular deficiency of this micronutrient, we can influence the energetic efficiency of ti

(1) Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause several complications as a result of the acidic pH over various cellular structures, which have been demonstrated and evaluated over time. Anemia can occur due to iron loss from erosions caused by acidic gastric content. In children, anemia has consequences that, in time, can affect their normal development. This study evaluates the presence of anemia as a result of pediatric gastroesophageal reflux disease. (2) Methods: 172 children were diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux in the gastroenterology department of a regional chil

A toddler with an unbalanced diet and gastrointestinal bleeding by juvenile polyp developed an aplastic crisis due to the human parvovirus B19 (HPVB19). Although he exhibited microcytic anemia without iron deficiency in the acute phase of HPVB19 infection, he presented with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in the chronic phase. IDA results in erythroblast hyperplasia and shortened red blood cell lifespan as like congenital hemolytic diseases, which may lead to an aplastic crisis during HPVB19 infection. It should be noted that iron deficiency is often masked, and microcytic anemia may be a clue fo

The functioning of the heart muscle is particularly sensitive to iron deficiency, the easily curable comorbidity most frequently associated with heart failure. Iron-deficient heart failure patients are more often rehospitalized and have reduced survival. Heart muscle function is particularly susceptible to martial deficiency. Recent randomized studies have shown that exogenous iron intake is accompanied by improved functional capacity (walking test), quality of life, and re-hospitalization rate in these patients. The symptoms of iron deficiency are not very specific and often confused with tho

Iron deficiency is a significant comorbidity of heart failure (HF), defined as the inability of the myocardium to provide sufficient blood flow. However, iron deficiency remains insufficiently detected. Iron-deficiency anemia, defined as a decrease in hemoglobin caused by iron deficiency, is a late consequence of iron deficiency, and the symptoms of iron deficiency, which are not specific, are often confused with those of HF or comorbidities. HF patients with iron deficiency are often rehospitalized and present reduced survival. The correction of iron deficiency in HF patients is associated wi

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a significant challenge to global health. The absorption and bioavailability depend on the delivery vehicle being used. Ferrous sulphate is a drug of choice for IDA but leads to frequent gastrointestinal tract side effects that force the patient to discontinue the treatment. Gastrointestinal side effects result from converting bivalent iron into trivalent iron accompanied by reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Due to lower absorption, oral preparations of trivalent iron are recommended in patients with intolerance to ferrous sulphate. Nanosized

Iron (Fe) is one of the essential micronutrients required by both plants and animals. In humans, Fe deficiency causes anemia, the most prevalent nutritional disorder. Most people rely on plant-based foods as their major Fe source, but plants are a poor source of dietary Fe. Therefore, there is a critical need to better understand the mechanisms involved in the uptake and trafficking of Fe and how plants adapt to Fe deficiency. Fe participates in key cellular functions such as photosynthesis and respiration. Perturbations of Fe uptake, transport, or storage affect plant growth as well as crop y

BACKGROUND: Blood donors are prone to have iron deficiency. The aim of this study was to determine utility of serum hepcidin as an indicator of iron deficiency in blood donors.
METHODS: A total of 200 voluntary, healthy blood donors were included in the study. Donors were categorized into four groups according to the donation frequency. Group I: (n = 50) who donated for the first time, or those who have not donated in the past 2 years (reactivated donors). Group II: (n = 50), who donated blood for the second time and had donated once in the previous 12 months. Group III: (n = 50), who donated

Iron is an essential element for life, as it is critical for oxygen transport, cellular respiration, DNA synthesis, and metabolism. Disruptions in iron metabolism have been associated with several complex diseases like diabetes, cancer, infection susceptibility, neurodegeneration, and others; however, the molecular mechanisms linking iron metabolism with these diseases are not fully understood. A commonly used model to study iron deficiency (ID) is yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we used quantitative (phospho)proteomics to explore the early (4 and 6 h) and late (12 h) response to ID. We

Growing evidence indicates that a suboptimal intrauterine environment confers risk for schizophrenia. The developmental model of schizophrenia posits that aberrant brain growth during early brain development and adolescence may interact to contribute to this psychiatric disease in adulthood. Although a variety of factors may perturb the environment of the developing fetus and predispose for schizophrenia later, a common mechanism has yet to be elucidated. Micronutrient deficiencies during the perinatal period are known to induce potent effects on brain development by altering neurodevelopmenta

DeLoughery, Thomas G. Anemia at altitude: iron deficiency and other acquired anemias. High Alt Med Biol. 22:245-248, 2021.-Acquired anemias are common throughout the world. This article will discuss iron deficiency and other acquired causes of anemia such as inflammation and renal disease. Iron deficiency with or without anemia can detract from performance and may be a risk factor for altitude sickness. Anyone considering going to altitude should be screened for iron deficiency with a serum ferritin if they have risk factors for iron deficiency. The effects of other acquired anemias are less w

Intravenous (IV) iron is the therapy of choice when oral iron is ineffective or poorly tolerated, yet use has been limited by fears of hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs). Newer formulations that bind iron more tightly and release it more slowly have made the risk of serious or severe HSRs very low. One such formulation, ferric derisomaltose, has been approved in the United States for delivery of 1000 mg iron in a single IV infusion. Ferric derisomaltose rapidly repletes iron parameters with low rates of serious or severe HSRs. Single-infusion iron repletion offers convenience, eliminates adhere

Iron is a vital micronutrient required for growth and development at all stages of human life. Its deficiency is the primary cause of anemia that poses a significant global health problem and challenge for developing countries. Various risks are involved during iron deficiency anemia (IDA), such as premature delivery, low birth weight, etc. Further, it affects children's cognitive functioning, delays motor development, hampers physical performance and quality of life. It also speeds up the morbidity and mortality rate among women. The major reasons accountable are elevated iron demand in diet,

Anemia and iron deficiency are two common comorbidities in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and are associated with a poor prognosis. In contrast to iron oral supplementation, administration of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (Injectafer®) improves quality of life, exercise capacity, and seems to reduce hospitalizations for heart failure. Unfortunately, although anaphylactic reactions are extremely rare, it is recommended to administer Injectafer® in a suitable medical environment. This limitation hinders Injectafer® administration and may cause reluctance from both physi

Anemia in pregnancy is a public health problem in Nigeria and it is more than likely that iron deficiency is the major cause. This study aimed to review relevant publications in order to summarize the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia, risk factors associated with iron deficiency, anemia in pregnancy as well as factors associated with compliance to routine iron therapy. MEDLINE Entrez PubMed search was performed in August 2017 and studies that investigated iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy in Nigeria from 1968 to 2017 were sought. Search keywords included "iron deficiency anemia, pregnanc
