Keratoconus (KC) is a common degenerative corneal disease, and heredity plays a key role in its development. Although few genes are known to cause KC, a large proportion of disease-causing genes remain to be revealed. Here, we report the identification of TUBA3D as a novel gene linked to KC. PURPOSE: To describe a novel technique to reshape the ectatic cornea by means of crescent keratectomy performed with an excimer laser using a mask.
METHODS: A crescent-shaped perforation at the base of the mask allowed the laser ablation to be directed only to the intended region, shielding the remaining cornea. Keratoconus is a corneal disease with onset typically occurring during puberty or early adulthood. The cornea progressively thins and acquires a cone-like shape which negatively affects visual acuity. In the early stages, visual acuity can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
