Thirteen acaricides used for control of cattle tick in Queensland were evaluated for their potential in the chemical control of the screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana. Laboratory evaluations and in vivo tests using artificially infested cattle were made in Papua New Guinea. Most of the acaricides caused some mortality of screw-worm larvae in infested cattle and in laboratory tests. Acaricides of the organophosphorous, carbamate and organophosphorous/synthetic pyrethroid groups showed reasonable activity against screw-worm fly, but the amidines were less effective.

Helminth infections in mammals are characterized by a high level of eosinophils in parasitized tissues and blood, and it has recently been suggested that these cells have a direct parasiticidal effect. Newborn larvae of Trichinella spiralis can be killed within 20 min by incubation at room temperature in a cell-free system, including purified human eosinophil peroxidase (EPO), H2O2 and chloride at pH 5.5. Serum and cells, collected from mice immunized by infection either with newborn larvae (NBL) or per os with infective larvae of Trichinella spiralis, were passively transferred to mice which were challenged with NBL. The effect of fenbendazole therapy was studied in six dogs fed 10,000 embryonated Toxocara canis eggs. At 47 days after they were fed T canis, four dogs were given fenbendazole in two divided doses totaling 50 mg/kg of body weight each day for 14 days. Two infected dogs were not given fenbendazole.
