Albendazole and Mebendazole as Anti-Parasitic and Anti-Cancer Agents: an Update.

The use of albendazole and mebendazole, i.e., benzimidazole broad-spectrum anthelmintics, in treatment of parasitic infections, as well as c … apeutic effects against tissue nematode/cestode infections (visceral, ocular, neural, and cutaneous larva migrans, anisakiasis, trichinosis, hepatic and intestinal capillariasis, angiostrongyliasis, gnathostomiasis, gongylonemiasis, thelaziasis, dracunculiasis, cerebral and subcutaneous cysticercosis, and echinococcosis). Establishment of a serodiagnosis system for the detection of Toxocara spp. and Ascaris suum infection in chickens.

Chickens are considered to act as paratenic hosts for agents, Toxocara canis, T. cati and Ascaris suum; which cause ascarid larva migrans syndrome (ascarid LMS) in humans. In addition, they are the definitive host for Ascaridia galli, considered not to be infective for humans. All ascarid parasites can have a high homology of antigenicity, leading to cross-reactivity in serodiagnostic assays. This study was conducted to establish a procedure for the serological detection of those roundworm infections in chickens. Twenty-five male Julia chickens were divided into five groups (n = 5); T. canis-,…

Larval toxocariasis and its clinical manifestation in childhood in the Slovak Republic.

Results are presented of 90 children aged 1-15 years hospitalized with toxocariasis. Blood count analysis and laboratory examination were done by routine clinical laboratory methods. Anti-Toxocara antibodies were detected in the serum of patients using an ELISA method. Demographic analysis of the children's families exposed to the risk of disease allowed estimation of age-specific rates for clinical toxocariasis. The probability of toxocaral infection and the intensity of its clinical manifestations in children are determined by the epidemiology of this zoonosis and by the risk factors in the

Ocular toxocariasis. A review.

This review is an update on the subject of ocular toxocariasis. An introductory section is designed to familiarize the clinician with the epidemiology, characteristics of the organism, the life cycle in dogs and the systemic human disease known as visceral larval migrans ( VLM ). The more comprehensive second section considers the historical aspects of the ocular involvement, the clinical variations of ocular toxocariasis, pathology, differential diagnosis, diagnostic approaches, and treatment. Emphasis is placed upon new diagnostic techniques such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELI

Retinal vasoproliferative tumors in ocular conditions of childhood.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vasoproliferative tumor (RVPT) is a vascular mass with exudative retinopathy and minimally dilated feeder vessels. This type of tumor can occur as a primary or secondary condition. Our purpose was to describe secondary vasoproliferative tumors from ocular conditions in childhood. METHODS: The clinical records and fundus photographs of patients with secondary RVPTs were reviewed and a detailed literature search was conducted to identify reported cases of secondary RVPTs. This information was used to compile a list of ocular and nonocular childhood conditions associated with

Dermatologic manifestations of parasitic diseases.

The skin being exposed to the environment is commonly the portal of entry for parasites. Infections with parasites characteristically produce cutaneous lesions as well as systemic disease in humans. In the past, parasitic diseases were limited to their endemic areas. With the relative ease of worldwide travel, however, they are appearing with increasing frequency in the United States and other developed countries. This article describes the characteristic cutaneous findings of parasitic diseases that physicians in the United States may encounter in their medical practice.

[Zoonotic worms from carnivorous pets: risk assessment and prevention].

A wide range of parasites can infect carnivorous pets. Some are more significant than others, owing to their prevalence, their pathogenicity for animal hosts, or their capacity to cause human disease. This article focuses on roundworms (Toxocara spp.) and tapeworms (Echinococcus spp.), which are emerging public health hazards in France. When humans ingest infective Toxocara eggs, the eggs hatch and release larvae that can migrate anywhere in the body, causing a disease called visceral larva migrans. Common target organs are the eyes, brain, liver, and lungs, with a risk of permanent visual, ne…

Travel and migration associated infectious diseases morbidity in Europe, 2008.

BACKGROUND: Europeans represent the majority of international travellers and clinicians encountering returned patients have an essential rol … titis. Dermatological conditions were dominated by bacterial infections, arthropod bites, cutaneous larva migrans and animal bites requiring rabies post-exposure prophylaxis and also leishmaniasis, myasis, tungiasis and one case of leprosy. Respiratory illness included 112 cases of tuberculosis including cases of multi-drug resistant or extensively drug resista …

Intestinal parasitic infections: risk factors and zoonotic aspects in human and dog populations of a rural area of Piaui State, Brazil.

Intestinal Parasitic Infections (IPIs) are prevalent in vulnerable populations, yet zoonotic transmission is underreported. This study analyzed, under the One Health approach, the prevalence of and risk factors for IPIs among humans and dogs in a rural region of Teresina, Piauí, Brazil. A total of 361 human fecal samples, 23 household dog fecal samples and 81 dog fecal samples collected from public roads were analyzed using the Lutz, Baermann and Kato-Katz methods. Anthropometric measurements, haemoglobin levels in children aged 5 to 14 and a survey of cases of cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) we…

[Analysis of comparative immunological profiles of intraocular fluid and serum samples in patients suspected of ocular toxoplasmosis or toxocarosis].

High seroprevalence of Toxoplasma and Toxocara spp. in populations of children and adults in Poland constitutes a significant risk of supradiagnosed parasitic eye infections. We described the clinical characteristics in relation to the analysis of comparative immunological profiles of T. gondii-specific antibodies in aqueous humour and serum samples in patients with reactivated retinochoroiditis, and of Toxocara spp. ones in cases with posterior granuloma, fibrotic and calcified tumor-like masses simulating retinoblastoma, detected by ophthalmoscopy and echography. A seroepidemiological survey for toxocariasis in apparently healthy residents in Gangwon-do, Korea.

We investigated the sero-prevalence of toxocariasis among healthy Korean adults in 1999. A total of 314 sera from normal inhabitants in Whachon-gun, Gangwondo, Korea was examined for specific antibody levels against excretory-secretory products of second stage larvae of Toxocara (TES). The presence of cross-reactions with other helminthiases such as cysticercosis, paragonimiasis, sparganosis or clonorchiasis was also checked by specific IgG ELISA. Sera showing positive reaction against TES were also tested by IgG immunoblot and by IgE ELISA. Out of 314 subjects, 16 was found to be positive by
