BACKGROUND: Retinal hamartoma is a common finding in tuberous sclerosis, but the symptomatic changes of this lesion have rarely been described. This evidence-based review evaluated the incidence of symptomatic retinal hamartoma and compared possible treatment modalities.
METHODS: We carried out a review of the literature using MEDLINE. Older publications not listed in MEDLINE were obtained from the reference list of currently published papers.

Barrett's oesophagus is known as one of the most important risk factor of oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Because of the increasing incidence of these latter, many endoscopic methods such as argon plasma coagulation, photodynamic therapy or endoscopic mucosal resection are now in evaluation in order to eradicate Barrett's oesophagus or to treat dysplasia and early cancers arising from this metaplasia. The aim of this paper is to comment these techniques and discuss their usefulness.

Maffucci's syndrome is a rare, congenital disease due to neuro-ectodermal dysplasia and is characterized by enchondromatosis and multiple soft tissue haemangiomata. Dysphagia is a distressing symptom commonly found in patients with oesophageal malignancy. Endoscopic laser therapy, in isolation or in conjunction with other treatments, can offer effective palliation. Main indications for application of photocoagulation in the prevention of retinal detachment in penetrating eye war injuries were presented. Photocoagulation was performed when intrabulbar foreign body was present, before its extraction and in the cases of traumatic ruptures of sectorial traumatic tractional retinal detachment. Modified photocoagulation by argon laser, with linked spots in two rows was used since it was shown to be clinically the most suitable.

To assess the ability of trans-scleral application of the continuous-wave neodymium: YAG laser to produce retinal ablation with reproducible chorioretinal scars, retinal photocoagulation with the YAG laser was done in four Dutch-belted rabbits (eight eyes). The authors suggest a new type of transscleral cyclophotocoagulation by using the Nd:YAG laser. This was done by bringing fibre optics into contact with the sclera. The study illustrates the macroscopic, histologic and scanning electron microscopic changes produced on the ciliary body of rabbit eyes with this technique. The actual possibility and the future prospect of applying this method to the human eye still remain to be investigated.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of the krypton laser for transscleral contact cyclophotocoagulation.
METHODS: Transscleral contact krypton laser cyclophotocoagulation was performed in 62 eyes of 57 patients with therapy-resistant glaucoma. A minimum follow-up for 6 months was obtained for 59 eyes. The krypton laser was delivered via a fiberoptic probe with compression of the sclera by the probe. The energy used was 4 to 5 J per application at the tip of the probe with an exposure time of 10 seconds.
RESULTS: The intraocular pressure (IOP) decreased from the baseline mean of 34.8 +/- 11.0

Microcystic or solid-looking fetal lung lesions associated with hydrops are associated with a high mortality rate. We treated patients with Kaposi's sarcoma of the lid or conjunctiva, molluscum contagiosum and papilloma of the lid with dye laser photocoagulation. The aim of this study was to describe the type and number of placental vascular anastomoses identified during fetoscopic laser coagulation in severe mid-trimester twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTS).
