PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) is a rare but aggressive malignant mesenchymal tumor, accounting for 2-5% of uterine malignancies. Because its symptoms and imaging features often resemble those of benign uterine leiomyoma (LM), accurate preoperative diagnosis remain difficult. This review summarizes recent advances in liquid biopsy for uLMS and explores its potential for early detection, molecular characterization, and treatment monitoring.
RECENT FINDINGS: Liquid biopsy enables minimally invasive detection of tumor-derived components such as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), ci…

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a malignant neoplasm of smooth muscle cell origin, is relatively rare in birds. This study presents the occurrence of this tumour in a 2-year-old male budgerigar. The bird was brought to the Ashian Veterinary Hospital with complaints of swelling in the medial area of the left leg. Clinical examination and radiological imaging confirmed the presence of soft tissue swelling in the medial region of the left leg. Empirical antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy were used to distinguish infectious inflammation from the tumour mass. After 12 days, a clinical diagnosis of susp…

Rectal leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is an exceptionally rare malignancy, representing ˂0.5% of all rectal cancers. Even more uncommon are the cases of radiation-induced LMS arising as an independent malignancy following pelvic radiotherapy. We report a case of a 56-year-old female patient with a history of high-grade large cell neuroendocrine cervical carcinoma treated 12 years earlier with radical hysterectomy and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. The patient presented with rectal discomfort and altered bowel habits. A colonoscopy revealed a near-obstructing polypoid rectal mass, and a biopsy confirmed LMS…

Retroperitoneal vascular leiomyosarcoma (RVLMS) are rare soft-tissue sarcomas that most commonly arise from large blood vessels and have a poor prognosis. We present the case of a 61-year-old woman who presented with isolated left flank pain. Abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 5 cm retroperitoneal soft-tissue mass that was contiguous with the left ovarian vein and connected to the proximal ureter, causing hydronephrosis. As ureteroscopy suggested extrinsic compression of the ureter, a percutaneous biopsy of the mass was obtained, whereupon diagnosis of leio…

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal tumours arising from the inferior vena cava (IVC) are rare tumours often requiring large vessel resection for complete surgical excision. Limited exposure to such tumours often discourages surgeons from offering surgical resection to these patients, depriving them of the only potentially curative modality. We present here the surgical technique for resection of a large IVC sarcoma without IVC reconstruction.
METHODS: A 53-year-old lady presented with a large retroperitoneal sarcoma encasing the infra-hepatic IVC with tumour thrombus extension into the hepatic cloac

PURPOSE: Preoperative diagnosis of uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is challenging because the disease can mimic benign leiomyoma (LM). The objective of the present study was to investigate the role of preoperative clinical characteristics and hematologic parameters to differentiate uterine LMS and LM.
METHODS: Preoperative clinical and laboratory variables were reviewed retrospectively in patients with LMS or LM, and the significances of intergroup differences were assessed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine optimal cut-off values for each variable. Logistic r…

Primary pancreatic leiomyosarcoma and primary pancreatic leiomyoma are rare tumors of the pancreas. Primary pancreatic leiomyoma is a benign tumor and its conversion to leiomyosarcoma has never been reported. We report a case of malignant transformation of pancreatic leiomyoma. In this case, a 75-year-old male, who presented with a mass in the head of the pancreas, was diagnosed with primary pancreatic leiomyoma. The patient maintained well on symptomatic treatment for 13 years. However, later the patient presented with loss of appetite, significant weight loss, and an abdominal lump, which wa…

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive gynecologic malignancy originating in the myometrium of the uterine corpus that tends to recur even after complete surgical excision. Current therapeutic agents have only modest effects on uterine leiomyosarcoma. Although antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates have been recognized as useful targeted therapies for other cancers, no study has yet evaluated the effects of this approach on uterine leiomyosarcoma.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the activity of tumoral CD70 in uterine leiomyosarcoma and assess the antitumor activi…

The most common malignant tumors in the colon are adenocarcinomas, while leiomyosarcoma (LMS) are rare. Here, we report a case of LMS of the sigmoid colon in a 73-year-old man who presented with sigmoido-rectal intussusception, which was discovered by abdominal computed tomography. As LMS of the colon is uncommon and is rarely associated with intussusception, we have described the imaging features in this case report.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal leiomyosarcoma and arteria lusoria represent rare entities in thoracic disease. In the setting of arteria lusoria, careful surgical planning and preoperative imaging is essential.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 53-year old male presented with a history of cough. Imaging demonstrated a 7-cm mediastinal mass at the level of the trachea and upper esophagus, abutting an incidentally found retroesophageal right subclavian artery. The right carotid artery originated from the aortic arch. Comprehensive evaluation demonstrated a mediastinal sarcoma. Given the tumor size and close as…

Leiomyosarcoma, a rare tumor subtype, accounts for 1% of all uterine malignancies, but contributes to a significant proportion of uterine cancer deaths. Surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment for all soft tissue sarcomas, including uterine variants. However, uterine leiomyosarcoma is challenging to diagnose preoperatively and can mimic the appearance of benign uterine leiomyomas. Recently, concerns have grown in this regard, as surgeons have utilized uterine morcellation and myomectomy procedures unknowingly in the setting of occult uterine sarcoma. Because of aggressive tumor biology…

A 51-year-old man came to our department because of a large abdominal mass. CT, MRI, and sonography revealed a large tumor adjacent to the retroperitoneal area. A resection was performed, and histologically we confirmed the diagnosis as a leiomyosarcoma originating from the retroperitoneum. Six years after the initial surgery, the patient came to our outpatient department with a complaint of nausea. A relatively large tumor was seen on a CT scan that was causing obstruction of the duodenum. Another surgery was performed with the final diagnosis as a recurrence of the leiomyosarcoma. After 3 co…

Soft tissue sarcomas with smooth muscle differentiation are termed leiomyosarcoma. Leiomyosarcoma is an aggressive tumor commonly originating from smooth muscle cells of uterus or retro peritoneal areas. Distant metastasis occurs by hematogenous route to liver and lung. Eyelid metastasis without involvement of other ocular structures is extremely rare. A case of eyelid metastasis which on extensive investigations was proved to be from upper gastrointestinal tract leiomyosarcoma is reported here.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) can originate from the retroperitoneum, uterus, extremity, and trunk. It is unclear whether tumors of different origin represent discrete entities. We compared clinicopathologic features and outcomes following surgical resection of LMS stratified by site of origin.
METHODS: Patients with LMS undergoing resection at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed. Clinicopathologic variables were compared across sites. Survival was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using log-rank and Cox regression analyses.
RESULTS: From 1983 to 2011, 1…
