Capsule/ligament lesions of the lateral compartment of the ankle lead to lateral laxity, which is a prime contributor to chronic ankle instability. Lateral ligament reconstruction stabilizes the joint. Exhaustive preoperative clinical and paraclinical work-up is essential. The present article classifies, presents and criticizes the main techniques in terms of long-term stabilization and reduction of osteoarthritis risk. Anatomic ligament repair with reinforcement (mainly extensor retinaculum) or anatomic ligament reconstruction are the two recommended options. Non-anatomic reconstructions usin

Due to an increase in sporting activities, the number of injuries of the immature knee is continuously increasing. These injuries necessitate a special approach regarding the particular anatomical situation with open growth plates. Three of the most commonly occurring injuries are rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, patella dislocation and meniscus injuries. The clinical results for conservative treatment of ruptures of the anterior cruciate ligament in the growth phase are inferior to operative treatment. Transepiphyseal reconstruction has been shown to be a safe treatment method and p

BACKGROUND: Exercise-related transient abdominal pain (ETAP) is a common entity in young athletes. Most occurrences are due to a "cramp" or "stitch," but an uncommon, and often overlooked, etiology of ETAP is median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS). The initial presentation of MALS typically includes postprandial nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, but in athletes, the initial presentation may be ETAP.
METHODS: We present a case series of three athletes who presented with exercise-related transient abdominal pain and were ultimately diagnosed and treated for MALS. Unlike other pat

PURPOSE: To determine ultrasonography's sensitivity for identifying the anterolateral ligament (ALL).
METHODS: A descriptive study of 18 cadaveric knees was performed. Ultrasonography was used to locate any anterolateral structures at the knee that could correspond to the ALL. The structure's length and relation with other notable anatomic landmarks (fibular head, Gerdy tubercle, joint line, lateral femoral epicondyle, popliteus tendon insertion) were quantified. The ultrasonography measurements were validated by dissecting each knee. The sensitivity of ultrasonography for detecting the ALL a

INTRODUCTION: Accurate detection of hepatic pseudolesions using multi-detector CT and MRI examinations is crucial for the differentiation of benign alterations from primary and secondary malignant lesions in hepatic parenchyma.
METHOD: The authors conducted a systematic literature review in PubMed. "Liver" and "pseudolesion" were used as keywords in English and Czech, and papers/articles published from 2000 to 2014 were retrieved.
RESULTS: The authors presented a literature review. In addition, the authors performed a retrospective evaluation of a group of patients treated for liver disease

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have described the presence of the anterolateral ligament (ALL). However, there is still no consensus regarding the anatomy of this structure with the topic controversially discussed. The aim of this study was to provide an anatomical description of the ligamentous structures on the anterolateral side of the knee with special emphasis on the ALL.
METHODS: Forty-four human cadaveric knees were dissected to reveal the ALL and other significant structures in the anterolateral compartment of the knee joint. The ALL was defined as a firm structure running in an oblique d

Only 6 cases of isolated unilateral rupture of the alar ligament have been previously reported. The authors report a new case and review the literature, morbid anatomy, and pathogenesis of this rare injury. The patient in their case, a 9-year-old girl, fell head first from a height of 5 feet off the ground. She presented with neck pain, a leftward head tilt, and severe limitation of right rotation, extension, and right lateral flexion of the neck. Plain radiographs and CT revealed no fracture but a shift of the dens toward the right lateral mass of C-1. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervic

Mutant mouse models are valuable resources for the study of tendon and ligament biology. Many mutant mouse models are used because their man … epend highly upon fibril-forming collagens, the primary extracellular macromolecules of tendons and ligaments. Models for these fibril-forming collagens, as well as for regulatory molecules like FACITs and SLRPs, are important for studying fibril assembly, growth, and maturation. INTRODUCTION: Double layered peritoneal folds, variously named as ligaments, omenta and mesenteries connect the intraperitoneal organs to the abdominal wall. Some of these ligaments contain blood vessels and lymph nodes while others are avascular. The peritoneal folds not only act as conduits for the passage of blood vessels from the retroperitoneum to reach intraperitoneal organs, but also provide a pathway for the spread of disease processes. It is difficult to identify these normal peritoneal folds at imaging. Computed tomography is the most common imaging modality used to detect diseases o…

BACKGROUND: Various methods regarding allograft knee replacements have been described. The animal models, which are generally used for this purpose include sheep, dogs, goats, and pigs, and accrue significant costs for study protocols. The authors herein describe an efficient and cost-effective model to study either native or tissue-engineered allografts for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) replacement in a New Zealand rabbit model with the potential for transgenic and cell migration studies.
METHODS: ACL reconstructions were performed in rabbits under general anesthesia. For fresh allograft

Ligamentous injuries of the elbow are common in sports. The diagnosis is usually based on a combination of the assessment of the mechanism of injury during the sporting activity and physical examination. Imaging with radiographs and MR imaging has an important diagnostic role, particularly when the clinical presentation is unclear and to evaluate for other important potential associated injuries such as myotendinous injuries, fractures, dislocations, and osteochondral lesions. Treatment includes conservative and surgical measures depending on the severity of the instability and associated inju

A broad ligament pregnancy is an extremely rare condition. The eventuality of such pregnancies reaching full term is even rarer. A full-term broad ligament pregnancy occurring through a rent in a previous lower segment caesarean scar has only been mentioned in literature but not reported. Our patient is an unbooked case, reported to us at 39 weeks of pregnancy. On clinical examination, an ultrasound and an MRI, a diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy was made. Ultimately the final diagnosis was made only on laparotomy. A broad ligament pregnancy was found with a rent in the previous caesarean scar

Cystic lesions of the female pelvis are common. Clinically, symptomatic lesions are mostly ovarian in origin and neoplastic in nature. Considerable diagnostic dilemma may be encountered if clinical, radiological, and estimation of serum markers failed to classify the origin and nature of such cysts. One such exceptional case is being described where a 35-year-old female presented with a rapidly growing cystic mass in lower abdomen, clinically suspicious of malignancy. Investigations failed to identify the nature. On laparotomy, excision of the mass was done. Suprisingly histopathological exami

The calcaneonavicular ligament lesion may be single or related to posterior tibial tendon involvement; the clinical and image-based diagnosis is difficult, without pathognomonic signs. The diagnosis is made during surgery and the calcaneonavicular ligament should always be explored whenever the posterior tibial tendon is involved.

Failure after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is a potentially devastating event that affects a predominantly young and active population. This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential causes of failure, including graft failure, loss of motion, extensor mechanism dysfunction, osteoarthritis, and infection. The etiology of graft failure is discussed in detail with a particular emphasis on failure after anatomic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
