What is the role of the uncinate fasciculus? Surgical removal and proper name retrieval.

The functional role of the uncinate fasciculus is still a matter of debate. We examined 44 patients submitted to awake surgery for removal of a left frontal or temporal glioma. In 18 patients, the removal included the uncinate fasciculus. We compared patients with or without removal on a series of neuropsychological tasks, performed at different time intervals: pre-surgery, in the first week after surgery and 3 months after surgery. Functional magnetic resonance and diffusion tensor imaging, fibre-tracking techniques were performed before surgery. At the last examination, patients with uncinat

Causes, presentation and outcome of lesional adult onset mediotemporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mediotemporal lobe (MTL) epilepsy (MTLE) is particularly frequent among human localisation related epilepsies. MTLE usually starts before adulthood and is most frequently associated with hippocampal sclerosis (HS). Here, aetiologies, disease courses and outcomes of adult onset MTLE patients treated at this tertiary epilepsy centre are studied. METHODS: We collected all patients studied between January 1999 and December 2005 fulfilling the following criteria: (1) MTLE manifestation at age > 20 years; (2) time between disease manifestation and assessment < or = 6 years; (3)

Aberrant fronto-limbic network in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a multimodal MRI study using parallel ICA.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions in children and adolescents, characterized as inattentive, impulsive, and hyperactive. Numerous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have revealed atypical brain function and structure in ADHD, and multimodal MRI studies contribute to a better understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of ADHD. METHODS: The demographic and clinical information and the structural and functional MRI scans used in this study were all obtained from the New York University Child Study C

A dimensional approach to jealousy reveals enhanced fronto-striatal, insula and limbic responses to angry faces.

Jealousy is a complex social emotion combining the different primary emotions of anger, fear and sadness. Previous evidence has suggested the involvement of fronto-striatal dopaminergic circuitry in pathological jealousy, although little is known about overlaps with the neural representation of primary emotions involved in non-morbid jealousy and the utility of a dimensional neuroimaging approach. In the current study, 85 healthy subjects underwent fMRI during an emotional face recognition paradigm and resting state. A total of 150 faces (happy, angry, fearful, sad, neutral) were presented and

[Mixed states and neuroimaging].

Despite the growing number of neuroimaging studies in bipolar disorder over the past years, the brain regions involved in mood dysregulation in this disease are still poorly understood. If some neurofunctional abnormalities seem to be independent of mood state, others were preferentially associated with mania or depression, involving the amygdala and other limbic regions as well as ventral frontal regions, with a likely hemispheric lateralization of these abnormalities according to the thymic state that was examined. Very few imaging studies became interested in bipolar patients in a mixed sta

Fronto-limbic and autonomic disjunctions to negative emotion distinguish schizophrenia subtypes.

Schizophrenia patients show a disconnection in amygdala-medial prefrontal cortex and autonomic arousal systems for processing fear. Concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging [fMRI] and skin conductance recording were used to determine whether these disturbances are specific to fear, or present in response to other signals of danger. We also examined whether these disturbances distinguish a specific symptom profile. During scanning, 27 schizophrenia (13 paranoid, 14 nonparanoid) and 22 matched healthy control subjects viewed standardized facial expressions of fear, anger and disgust (ver

Pattern of ventral temporal lobe interconnections in rhesus macaques.

The entorhinal cortex (EC, A28) is linked through reciprocal pathways with nearby perirhinal and visual, auditory, and multimodal association cortices in the temporal lobe, in pathways associated with the flow of information for memory processing. The density and laminar organization of these pathways is not well understood in primates. We studied interconnections within the ventral temporal lobe in young adult rhesus monkeys of both sexes with the aid of neural tracers injected in temporal areas (Ts1, Ts2, TE1, area 36, temporal polar area TPro, and area 28) to determine the density and lamin

Spike-wave discharges in adult Sprague-Dawley rats and their implications for animal models of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Spike-wave discharges (SWDs) are thalamocortical oscillations that are often considered to be the EEG correlate of absence seizures. Genetic absence epilepsy rats of Strasbourg (GAERS) and Wistar Albino Glaxo rats from Rijswijk (WAG/Rij) exhibit SWDs and are considered to be genetic animal models of absence epilepsy. However, it has been reported that other rat strains have SWDs, suggesting that SWDs may vary in their prevalence, but all rats have a predisposition for them. This is important because many of these rat strains are used to study temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), where it is assumed t

Fronto-limbic disconnection correlates with paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity following traumatic brain injury: An indirect disconnection-symptom mapping study.

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is a clinically important manifestation of dysautonomia following traumatic brain injury (TBI). While it is thought to arise from central autonomic network disconnection, supporting evidence is limited. Here, we integrate clinically obtained magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesion data with human connectome data to identify specific white matter tract disconnections and gray matter parcel damage associated with PSH. Our sample included 117 patients who underwent susceptibility weighted imaging and 3D T1 MRI sequences as part of clinical care while adm

The tumor suppressor Nf2 regulates corpus callosum development by inhibiting the transcriptional coactivator Yap.

The corpus callosum connects cerebral hemispheres and is the largest axon tract in the mammalian brain. Callosal malformations are among the most common congenital brain anomalies and are associated with a wide range of neuropsychological deficits. Crossing of the midline by callosal axons relies on a proper midline environment that harbors guidepost cells emitting guidance cues to instruct callosal axon navigation. Little is known about what controls the formation of the midline environment. We find that two components of the Hippo pathway, the tumor suppressor Nf2 (Merlin) and the transcript

AF64A affects septal choline acetyltransferase but not parvalbumin immunoreactive cells.

Rats received bilateral intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusions of either AF64A (1.5 nmol/ventricle; n = 9) or vehicle (3.0 microliters/ventricle; n = 7). Four weeks later, the animals were anesthetized and their brains processed to visualize and quantify choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactive (IR) and parvalbumin-IR GABAergic neurons in the septal complex by immunocytochemistry (PAP method). AF64A significantly reduced the number of ChAT-IR perikarya in the medial septum (28%), ventral limb of the diagonal band of Broca (30%), and horizontal limb of the diagonal band of Broca (20%),

Attenuated rightward hemispheric asymmetry in ADHD: structural MRI evidence from a normalized asymmetry index and its association with cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND: Altered hemispheric asymmetry has been proposed as a potential neurodevelopmental feature of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, findings remain inconsistent, and the functional relevance of structural asymmetry patterns is not well established. This study examines volumetric and cortical-thickness asymmetries across cortical and subcortical regions in children and adolescents with ADHD compared to typically developing controls and evaluates their association with objective cognitive performance. METHODS: Forty participants with ADHD and 30 age- and sex-match

Evolutionary implications of NOTCH2NLC mutations: brain structural changes in neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease revealed by comprehensive morphometry.

This study investigated brain structural changes associated with NOTCH2NLC gene mutations in neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) patients, focusing on the evolutionary implications of this human-specific gene in brain development. We analysed 41 NIID patients and 21 healthy controls using voxel-based morphometry and surface-based morphometry to assess differences in grey matter volume and cortical complexity. Spatial relationships between brain atrophy and white matter hyperintensity volume as well as cerebrospinal fluid fraction were examined. Additionally, we conducted exploratory

Diffuse argyrophilic grain disease with TDP-43 proteinopathy and neuronal intermediate filament inclusion disease: FTLD with mixed tau, TDP-43 and FUS pathologies.

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is a group of disorders characterized by degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes, leading to progressive decline in language, behavior, and motor function. FTLD can be further subdivided into three main subtypes, FTLD-tau, FTLD-TDP and FTLD-FUS based which of the three major proteins - tau, TDP-43 or FUS - forms pathological inclusions in neurons and glia. In this report, we describe an 87-year-old woman with a 7-year history of cognitive decline, hand tremor and gait problems, who was thought to have Alzheimer's disease. At autopsy, histopatholo

Semiologic subgroups of insulo-opercular seizures based on connectional architecture atlas.

OBJECTIVE: Insulo-opercular seizures are characterized by diverse semiology, related to the insula's multiple functional roles and extensive connectivity. We aimed to identify semiologic subgroups and correlate these with insulo-opercular subregions based on connectional architecture. METHODS: We retrospectively collected a large series of 37 patients with insulo-opercular seizures explored by stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) from three epilepsy centers. A new human brain atlas (Brainnetome Atlas, BNA) based on both anatomic and functional connections was employed to segment insulo-opercul

Serotonin transporter gene promoter methylation in peripheral cells in healthy adults: Neural correlates and tissue specificity.

Early adversity can influence gene expression via epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation. Peripheral tissues are essential in psychiatric epigenetics, as methylation generally cannot be assessed in the living human brain. Several magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies show associations of peripheral serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) methylation with function and/or structure of frontal-limbic circuits and brain's resting-state. Commonly used samples are derived from blood, saliva or buccal cells. However, little is known regarding which peripheral tissue is most strongly associat

Influence of the fusiform gyrus on amygdala response to emotional faces in the non-clinical range of social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety often involves a combination of hypervigilance and avoidance to potentially warning signals including the facial expression of emotions. Functional imaging has demonstrated an increase in amygdala response to emotional faces in subjects with social anxiety. Nevertheless, it is unclear to what extent visual areas processing faces influence amygdala reactivity in different socially anxious individuals. We assessed the influence of the fusiform gyrus activation on amygdala response to emotional faces in the non-clinical range of social anxiety. METHOD: Twenty-two norma

Functional connectivity as a prognostic biomarker for neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants without severe brain injury.

Despite a decline in severe neonatal brain injury in preterm infants, neurodevelopmental impairment remains prevalent. Identifying early biomarkers for neurodevelopmental impairment, particularly in infants without severe neonatal brain injury, is crucial for intervention. This study explores whether brain dysmaturation, indicated by functional connectivity alterations at term-equivalent age, predicts neurodevelopmental impairment severity at 24 months corrected age in preterm infants without severe neonatal brain injury. In this observational cohort study, preterm infants born < 31 weeks' ges
