Intraoral Spitz naevus: a case report.

Intraoral occurrences of Spitz naevus are very rare, there being only one previously documented case in the literature. Here is reported a case of a young male who presented with a pigmented lesion of the upper labial mucosa which had the clinical appearance of a simple naevus. Excision biopsy confirmed this to be a Spitz naevus. This lesion shares histopathological similarities with malignant melanoma. Spitz naevus is a benign lesion, but malignant transformation has been reported and close monitoring is recommended.

Oral malignant melanoma treated with Mohs micrographic surgery by fixed-tissue technique.

We describe a 77-year-old man with stage III oral malignant melanoma (Breslow thickness, 4.0 mm) treated with Mohs micrographic surgery by fixed-tissue technique, elective lymph node dissection, and postoperative radiation therapy. This treatment plan permitted complete excision of the melanomatous field, sparing the need for radical resection. Although the patient later died of widespread metastases, there was no evidence of local or regional recurrence and his quality of life was preserved. We believe that Mohs micrographic surgery by fixed-tissue technique followed by radiation therapy offe

Novel PRKAR1A mutation in Carney complex: a case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Carney complex is a rare autosomal dominant syndrome that has been shown to be associated with inactivation due to PRKAR1A mutations. We revealed a novel PRKAR1A gene mutation in Chinese patient with Carney complex and review the literature to enhance understanding of Carney complex. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old Chinese male patient with a family history cardiac myxoma was admitted to our Department of Endocrinology because of central obesity and hyperpigmentation. Physical examination revealed a maximum blood pressure of 150/93mmHg, a waist circumference of 102cm, a weight of

Lip, Oral Cavity and Pharyngeal Cancer Burden in the European Union from 1990-2019 Using the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study.

Background-The recent burden of lip and oral cavity, nasopharynx and other pharynx cancer (LOCP) has not been specifically investigated in Europe. Methods-In this descriptive epidemiological study, LOCP was categorised into lip and oral cavity cancer, nasopharynx cancer and other pharynx cancer, with European trends documented using the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD). Summary statistics included deaths, age-standardised incidence rates (ASIR), mortality rates, YLLs (years of life lost), YLDs (years of life lived with disability) and DALYS (disability-adjusted life years). Results-Lip and

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip.

We reviewed 39 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of lip from 53 consecutive patients with carcinoma of the lip. The retrospective review includes age, location, risk factors, TNM classification, histologic differentiation, treatment methods, recurrent disease, site of recurrence, and follow-up status. Results reveal prognosis is related to original tumor size, local recurrence, and presence of cervical metastasis. Aggressive surgical treatment is recommended for identifiable poor prognostic lesions and includes surgical excision, prophylactic suprahyoid neck dissection, and possible radical nec

Focal dermal hypoplasia syndrome with incomplete transverse facial cleft and tumour of the lips.

A case of Goltz's syndrome complicated with both incomplete transverse facial cleft and characteristic tumour of the upper and lower lips is presented. Tumour excision and repair of defect were successfully performed.

Intravascular angiomatosis (Masson's lesion).

Intravascular angiomatosis, also known as Massons' lesion, is a relatively uncommon, although important, tumor because it clinically mimics such benign lesions as mucocele, pyogenic granuloma, and hemangioma, as well as malignant neoplasms such as angiosarcoma and Kaposi's sarcoma. More important is the potential for misdiagnosis at the histological level that poses a significant problem to those unfamiliar with this lesion. This article reviews the literature on perioral intravascular angiomatosis and presents five additional cases.

Neodymium-YAG laser therapy for vascular lesions.

Three patients with port-wine stains with a nodular surface, one patient with macrocheilia resulting from a port-wine stain, and one patient with a capillary hemangioma were treated with a Nd-YAG laser (mediLas, MBB-AT, Munich). Irradiance was between 800 and 1,600 watts/cm2, with energy fluence between 400 and 1,600 joules/cm2. Treatments were performed with local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. In all patients, marked improvements could be obtained after only a few treatments. Histologically there was necrosis of epidermis and dermis immediately after laser application, and ectatic vessel

Schwann cell features in neurotropic melanoma.

Schwann cell features were found on ultrastructural examination of a neurotropic melanoma (de novo type) of the lip. A neurotropic pattern of growth was retained in metastatic tumors in lymph nodes and lung. Melanin was not demonstrable in extra-epidermal tumor cells.

[Mouth opening limitations due to soft tissue lesions].

Mouth opening limitations following on soft tissue lesions are subdivided according to aetiology into collagen disease connectival lesions, cutaneous and mucosa lesions consequent on the action of physical agents and, finally, cicatricial lesions of the cheeks and lips as a result of surgery for cancer or trauma. The commonest forms of plastic surgery used to correct such lesions are reviewed.

Accuracy of clinical diagnosis for the identification of potentially malignant disorders and malignant lip lesions.

The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of clinical diagnosis for lip lesions based on sensitivity and specificity. The retrospective analysis focused on the detection of lesions caused by potentially malignant disorders (PMDs) and malignant lesions (n = 1195). All cases were classified as benign, PMD, and malignant lesions. Concordance between diagnoses based on clinical examination and those based on histopathological analysis was assessed, and accuracy for the identification of PMD and malignant lesions was calculated. Histopathological analysis revealed 44 lesion types; PMD and ma

Lip reconstruction: an anthropometric and functional analysis of surgical outcomes.

Postoperative evaluation of results of reconstructive procedures of the lips mainly consists of describing the technique, complications and subjectively interpreted patient photographs. The authors present a photo-assisted pre- to postoperative evaluation of reconstructive procedures of the lips based on anthropometric measurements and functional outcome. Forty-eight patients underwent partial or full thickness excision of tumours of the lips and subsequent reconstruction. An analysis of standardized pre- and postoperative photographs included measurements of intercanthal width, mouth width, p

An unusual case of pediatric embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with subsequent diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1.

A 10-month-old girl presented with a 4-month history of a rapidly growing lesion on the lower lip. Initial assessment and Doppler ultrasound supported a diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma. However, emergent biopsy revealed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a highly malignant tumor commonly associated with cancer-susceptible syndromes including neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Despite having no apparent clinical features of NF1 at initial presentation, she was later found to have multiple café-au-lait spots and a subsequent diagnosis of NF1 was made.
