A fourteen-year old female presented with a mediastinal mass and pleural effusion. A diagnosis of a poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma was made from a lymph node biopsy. Fluid from a pleural tap contained numerous lymphoblasts; 91.5% of these lymphoblasts had a thymus leukemic antigen. The ability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with idiopathic aplastic anaemia to provide colony-stimulating activity (CSA) was compared to that of normal controls. CSA was prepared by incubating peripheral blood mononuclear cells with phytohaemagglutinin. The supernatant derived from the latter is known as activated lymphocyte-conditioned medium (ALCM). The CSA of ALCM in eight patients was compared to that of normals in 12 experiments. In all but one instance there was decreased CSA by patient ALCM. Possible implications of these findings are discussed.

OBJECTIVES: Chemokines play a central role in lymphocyte trafficking and homing. The actin cytoskeleton is involved in cell morphological changes and motility. Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) protein (WASP) has been implicated in regulation of cytoskeleton rearrangement.
