Brock, Thomas D. (Indiana University, Bloomington). Effects of magnesium ion deficiency on Escherichia coli and possible relation to the mode of action of novobiocin. J. Bacteriol. 84:679-682. 1962.-Cells of Escherichia coli ML35 grew in magnesium-deficient medium at an arithmetic rate for 4 to 5 hr. In the later stages of this period, the viability of the cells decreased, ribonucleic acid was lost, and the cells became able to hydrolyze o-nitro-phenyl-beta-d-galactoside at a much increased rate. Further, the cells became filamentous and stained less intensely with methylene blue. Since magnes

OBJECTIVE: Trace elements are essential for the biochemistry of the cell. Their reference values have been found to differ considerably in pregnant women stratified by age, place of residence, anthropometric status, and length of pregnancy. In optimal amounts, these elements reduce the risk of pregnancy complications. Subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), and rubidium (Rb) on pregnant women in an iodine deficiency region and find the relation

AIM: The kidney thick ascending limb (TAL) plays a key role in the transport of sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Bartter syndrome is a hypokalemic, salt-losing tubulopathy caused by impaired TAL function. Pathogenic variants in SLC12A1 or KCNJ1 cause antenatal Bartter syndrome, and variants in CLCNKB result in classical Bartter syndrome. Although all variants impair TAL electrolyte transport, their effects on mineral handling differ. In contrast to antenatal forms, classical Bartter syndrome is frequently associated with hypomagnesemia, a feature also found in Gitelman synd

Root hairs enlarge root surface and facilitate plant exploration for edaphic resources, particularly under nutrient-limiting conditions. While magnesium (Mg) deficiency is known to markedly stimulate root hair development, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly characterised. Here, we elucidate the critical role of SHADE AVOIDANCE 4 (SAV4) in regulating Mg deficiency-induced root hair elongation through modulating epidermal auxin level in Arabidopsis. Root hair elongation under Mg deficiency was significantly suppressed in sav4 mutant, and SAV4 epidermal-specific expression partiall

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Magnesium is a fundamental cation that regulates neuronal transmission, protein synthesis, energy metabolism. Magnesium deficiency mostly affects nervous and cardiovascular systems determining weakness, tremors, seizure and arrhythmias. This condition retains also a role in memory function and neuronal plasticity. Importantly magnesium deficiency could remain latent and asymptomatic resulting a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In this sense we aim to determine magnesium status in patient presenting cognitive impairment of vascular origin.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and micronutrient deficiencies contribute to the risk of cardiometabolic diseases such are type 2 diabetes mellitus and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD).
OBJECTIVE: We examined the frequency of concomitant deficit of Magnesium (Mg) and vitamin D in obese patients and evaluated the connection of these combined deficiencies with indicators of cardiometabolic risk in non-diabetic subjects.
METHODS: Non-diabetic middle aged adults (n = 80; mean age 36 ± 4 years, 52% women) were recruited based on weight/adiposity parameters [i.e. Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage (FAT

Recent studies underline the importance of the immunoinflammatory processes in the pathology of acute magnesium (Mg)-deficiency. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of acute experimental Mg-deficiency in the rat on neutrophil activity. Weaning male Wistar rats were fed either a Mg-deficient or a control diet for 8 days. In this experiment, we measured neutrophil respiratory burst by chemiluminescence; then, to examine the molecular events associated with acute Mg-deficiency, we applied cDNA array technology to define the transcription response in neutrophils of Mg-deficient rats in

Quinolones accumulate in cartilage, and because they form chelate complexes with divalent cations, they possess the potential to induce a deficiency of functionally available magnesium. To test the hypothesis that quinolone-induced arthropathy is caused (or aggravated) by magnesium deficiency in cartilage, we induced magnesium deficiency by feeding juvenile rats a magnesium-deficient diet for 9 days and treated the rats with single oral doses of ofloxacin (0, 100, 300, 600, or 1,200 mg/kg of body weight) during this period. Additional groups of juvenile rats on a normal diet were treated with …

Between October 1988 and March 1990, 173 urinary stone patients (average age 38.3 years) were evaluated metabolically, especially with regard to urinary magnesium, pyrophosphate (Ppi) citrate and glycosaminoglycans (GAG). 25 healthy subjects served as controls. Inhibitory deficiency was found to be the most frequent causal factor in our series, with an incidence of 48.7% in first-time stone formers and 51.08% in recurrent urolithiasis (p less than 0.1). Deficient citrate levels were present in 46.56%, hypomagnesiuria in 24.4%, hypopyrophosphaturia in 10.7% and deficient GAG in 2.7% of the pati

Isolated coronary arteries from dogs were incubated in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate isolation and exposed to normal, high, and low concentrations of magnesium in the medium. Sudden withdrawal of magnesium from the medium increased whereas high concentrations of magnesium decreased the basal tension of the arteries. The absence of magnesium in the medium significantly potentiated the contractile responses of both small and large coronary arteries to norepinephrine, acetylcholine, serotonin, angiotensin, and potassium. These data support the hypothesis that magnesium deficiency, associated with sudd…

Magnesium is an essential micronutrient that plays a critical role in insulin signaling, glucose metabolism, and energy balance. With the growing global burden of childhood obesity and metabolic dysfunction, serum magnesium deficiency has emerged as a potential modifiable factor in the development of insulin resistance. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between serum magnesium levels and insulin resistance among overweight and obese children. A comprehensive search of electronic databases and clinical trial registries was conducted for studies published between 2011 and 2025…

BACKGROUND: The association between magnesium status and sleep quality is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between renal reabsorption-related magnesium depletion score (MDS) and sleep quality.
METHODS: This study was conducted through a cross-sectional survey of adults aged ≥20 years who participated in NHANES 2005-2014. We used weighted logistic regression to examine the association between MDS and sleep quality and performed trend tests to analyze for the presence of a dose-response relationship. Subgroup analyses were performed based on various sleep outcome

The banana development was inhibited under the long-term magnesium deficiency (MD) stress, resulting in the leaf chlorosis. MYB108 and WRKY75 are involved in regulating the growth and development of banana leaves and roots under long-term MD. Magnesium deficiency (MD) causes plant growth inhibition, ageing acceleration, yield reduction and quality decline of banana (Musa paradisiaca AA), but the molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying the changes in response to long-term MD conditions remain unknown. In this study, a long-term MD experiment was performed with banana seedlings at the four-le…

Given a possible anti-inflammatory role of magnesium in endothelial cells, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of magnesium on human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) viability, gene expression, and the pro-inflammatory response caused by a bacterial endotoxin (LPS). HUVECs were cultured at three different concentrations of magnesium sulphate (0.1 mM; control-1 mM; 5 mM) for 72 hours. Exposing the cells to LPS reduced cell viability in culture with low magnesium, but high magnesium protected the HUVECs from LPS-induced cell death. LPS-treated HUVECs cultured in low magne

BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg)-deficiency occurs most frequently in strongly acidic, sandy soils. Citrus are grown mainly on acidic and strong acidic soils. Mg-deficiency causes poor fruit quality and low fruit yield in some Citrus orchards. For the first time, we investigated Mg-deficiency-responsive miRNAs in 'Xuegan' (Citrus sinensis) roots using Illumina sequencing in order to obtain some miRNAs presumably responsible for Citrus Mg-deficiency tolerance.
RESULTS: We obtained 101 (69) miRNAs with increased (decreased) expression from Mg-starved roots. Our results suggested that the adaptation o
