BACKGROUND: The role of malocclusion in the aetiology of TMDs has been discussed extensively in literature, however, the varied results from different studies have made it difficult to reach a consensus. The objective of this study was to determine the association of dental characteristics and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs).
METHODS: This case-control study involved a total of 266 patients who were equally divided into 2 groups (TMD/Non-TMD) based on the score obtained from the Fonseca's questionnaire. Dental characteristics such as class of malocclusion, overjet, overbite, crossbite, and

Osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be described as non-inflammatory arthritic condition that results in degenerative changes of the joint structures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the skeletal morphology of the TMJ in patients with osteoarthritis with severe skeletal malocclusions (Class II and Class III) and patients with Class I occlusion as controls. Cone beam computed tomography images of 45 Class I, 28 Class II and 44 Class III joints of Caucasian patients were assessed for the presence of any degenerative changes in the condyle and fossa/eminence complex as d

The growth potential of individuals with Class II malocclusions is of interest to the practicing orthodontist because such malocclusions constitute a significant percentage of cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate on cross-sectional and longitudinal bases the changes in mandibular length and relationship and maxillary-mandibular relationships in untreated Class II subjects from deciduous to permanent dentition and also to evaluate the effects of orthodontic treatment, with and without the extraction of first premolars, on these relationships. Class II samples were compared with matc

Forty-nine persons with evidence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) documented by echocardiogram were used as a marker of diffuse connective tissue disorders to measure the incidence of maxillofacial skeletal deformities and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Forty-five percent of the MVP patients had TMJ dysfunction; furthermore, 50% of this group had hyperlaxity of the thumb, and a significant number had a Class II molar relationship. This study demonstrates a high incidence of TMJ dysfunction among MVP patients and leads to the suspicion of a common connective tissue disorder.

Maxillary midline diastema is a common aesthetic concern of dental patients. Various treatment modalities have been employed to close diastemas. This case report describes an unusual orthodontic treatment approach for a 25-year-old African American female patient with a large maxillary midline diastema of 5mm, bialveolar dental protrusion and unilateral Class III malocclusion. The treatment included one mandibular incisor extraction, followed by retraction of the incisors. At the end of the 16-month active treatment period, favourable aesthetic and occlusal outcomes were attained. Closure of m

Extraction sites may be needed to achieve specific orthodontic goals of positioning the dentition within the craniofacial complex. The fundamental reality that determines the final position of the dentition, however, is the control exercised by the clinician in closure of the extraction sites. A specific treatment objective may require the posterior teeth to remain in a constant position anteroposteriorly as well as vertically, while the anterior teeth occupy the entire extraction site. Another treatment objective may require the reverse, or any number of purposeful alternatives of extraction

BACKGROUND: Classification is one of the most common tasks in artificial intelligence (AI) driven fields in dentistry and orthodontics. The AI abilities can significantly improve the orthodontist's critical mission to diagnose and treat patients precisely, promptly, and efficiently. Therefore, this study aims to develop a machine-learning model to classify German orthodontic patients as skeletal class I or II based on minimal cephalometric parameters. Eventually, clustering analysis was done to understand the differences between clusters within the same or different skeletal classes.
