MRI examination of the TMJ and functional results after conservative and surgical treatment of mandibular condyle fractures.

Thirty patients with healed condylar fractures were included in this study. Ten patients were conservatively treated while in 20 patients the fractures were treated surgically. All patients were assessed using: magnetic resonance imaging of both temporomandibular joints (TMJs) to evaluate the disc position and morphology; radiographs to evaluate the alignment of the bony fragments after consolidation; and clinical examination including the stomatognathic functional status and mechanical axiography. The study shows that anatomical reduction of a low, displaced or dislocated condylar fracture by

Mandibular fractures in India during the Second World War (1944 and 1945): analysis of the Snawdon series.

The records of Major J. W. E. Snawdon of the No. 2 Indian Maxillofacial Unit provide a rare and detailed insight into the treatment of mandibular fractures during the Second World War. Notable features were the high frequency of civilian-type injuries, the considerable delays between injury and definitive treatment, the lengthy periods of intermaxillary fixation required, the high incidence of infections and the common occurrence of delayed union. Despite these problems, only 12% of fractures resulted in non-union, usually when these were missile injuries with considerable destruction. Reporti…

Condylar fractures of the mandible. I. Classification and relation to age, occlusion, and concomitant injuries of teeth and teeth-supporting structures, and fractures of the mandibular body.

In 123 individuals, 138 fractures of the mandibular condyle were classified with respect to fracture level, dislocation at the fracture level, and condylar head relation to the articular fossa. The age of the patient and the location of the most distal occlusal contact were recorded as well as teeth injuries and concomitant fractures of the mandibular body. The position of the most distal occlusal contact did not influence the dislocation of the condylar fragment. Teeth injuries such as fractures and luxation were found to be associated with condylar head or neck fractures, whereas the concomi

Mandibular fracture with subsequent sequestrum formation and tooth-root abscess in a 3-year-old mare.

A 3-year-old quarter horse cross mare was presented to the Atlantic Veterinary College (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island) for evaluation of a persistent draining tract on the ventral aspect of the left mandible, associated with a previous fracture. Radiography and ultrasonography confirmed the presence of a chronic sequestrum separated from the parent bone. Sequestrectomy and surgical debridement of the mandible were carried out, and the horse was discharged. Three months later, the mare was presented again to the Atlantic Veterinary College, as the draining tract had not resolved. A CT sca

Dislocation angle predicts complications following mandibular condylar fracture treatment: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular condylar fractures are among the most common maxillofacial injuries, yet predictors of postoperative complications remain poorly defined. The role of radiographic dislocation angle as a prognostic factor has received limited attention. This study aimed to identify risk factors for complications following condylar fracture treatment, with particular focus on the predictive value of the dislocation angle. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 184 patients with mandibular condylar fractures treated at a tertiary referral center between 2009 and 2022. Complicati

Management of Mandibular Fractures in Infants and Neonates: A Narrative Review of Growth Preservation, Functional Recovery, and Safeguarding.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular fractures in infants and neonates are rare and present distinct diagnostic and management challenges. Most evidence is derived from isolated case reports and small series, and no age-specific guidance exists. METHODS: A narrative synthesis was conducted using 26 English-language publications (1985-2025) reporting 50 mandibular fractures in children aged ≤ 12 months, including 10 neonates. PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus and Google Scholar were searched. Data were extracted using the CARE framework to ensure consistency in documenting clinical findings, imaging, management and …

Assessment of Intraoral Resin Splints Secured With Cerclage Wires for Mandibular Fracture Repair in 16 Dogs.

The aim of this study was to determine if an intraoral resin splint that is secured to the mandible with cerclage wires, a cerclage intraoral resin splint (CIRS), is a viable, minimally invasive option for mandibular body fracture repair in dogs. A medical record search identified 16 dogs with fractures as a result of periodontal disease, endodontic disease, head trauma, or a combination of these causes, and CIRS was performed in partially or completely edentulous areas of the mid or caudal mandibular body. At the time of appliance removal, the fracture sites of 13 dogs had healed with a bony

Innovative Approach in the Management of Displaced Mandibular Fracture in a Four-Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

Craniofacial trauma has been reported to be a major health issue in children. In the pediatric population, the mandible is a more common site than the maxilla. The condyle and parasymphysis are the major sites of mandibular fracture in children. The encountered mandibular fractures are undisplaced due to the high elasticity of the mandible and the less dense condylar neck that resists the displacement of the bone. Management is more directed toward less invasive procedures without manipulating the facial skeleton such that it results in less psychological and physical trauma to the child. The …

Accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging black bone sequence for mandibular fracture diagnosis and dislocation measurement.

This study aims to evaluate the quality of diagnostic assessment of three-dimensional (3D) T1-weighted fast field echo (FFE) "black bone" magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences in comparison to the gold standard computed tomography (CT) in patients with mandible fractures. All consecutive patients who presented with mandibular fractures between the mandibular and mental foramen were included and received an MRI in addition to the standard CT (reference). The patient collective's epidemiological data were analyzed, and the images of CT and MRI were assessed regarding the degree of mandibula…

The influence of microplate spacing on mandibular ramus fracture fixation stability: a biomechanical finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of different microplate spacing on the relative displacement of the fractured mandibular ramus during mastication after using double microplates for fixation, using finite element analysis. This study aims to provide a theoretical basis for clinical design of the distance between two microplates. METHODS: Finite element models of the mandible, teeth, periodontal membrane, and microplates (Johnson & Johnson, thickness 1 mm) were established. A fracture line was set on the mandibular ramus from the sigmoid notch to the angle of the mandible, corresponding to

Novel Endoscopic-Assisted Long Plate Approach for Mandibular Condylar Fracture Reconstruction-A Preliminary Study.

Mandibular condylar fractures can lead to facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and temporomandibular joint instability. To minimize the risk of these issues, endoscopic-assisted reduction techniques were developed. Nevertheless, the confined working space inherent in endoscopic procedures poses challenges, especially in cases with unstable fracture sites, movable plates, and screws. To solve this dilemma, we developed a novel surgical technique using long plate for condylar fracture fixation. "Long Plate Technique" involves a long plate being stabilized via the submandibular incision site, with scr

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Bone Remodeling After Closed Treatment for Mandibular Condylar Head Fracture.

Closed treatment of mandibular condylar fractures has been used for its indications based on the fracture site, fracture status, and patient age. Posttreatment mandibular condyle size is associated with mandibular function; however, a few studies have reported bone remodeling patterns and volume changes in the condyle and glenoid fossa after mandibular condylar head fractures (CHFs). Therefore, volumetric changes in the mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa were analyzed in the present study, and bone remodeling patterns were evaluated after mandibular CHFs. The present study included 16 condyl

Postoperative Intermaxillary Elastic Traction Contributes to the Stability of Absorbable Plates Fixation for Bilateral Mandibular Fracture.

The use of absorbable plates can be challenging for mandibular fractures involving bilateral dentition. Chewing and mouth opening movements may cause loosening or breakage of absorbable materials, leading to displacement of bone segments and resulting in malocclusion. The use of absorbable materials for bilateral mandibular fracture surgery itself raises concerns for surgeons. Timely intermaxillary elastic traction is essential for these patients after surgery to maintain correct occlusion. The surgical approaches were performed with intraoral mandibular sulcus incisions. During the surgery, i…

Parameter optimization in a finite element mandibular fracture fixation model using the design of experiments approach.

Only a few mandibular bone finite element (FE) models have been validated in literature, making it difficult to assess the credibility of the models. In a comparative study between FE models and biomechanical experiments using a synthetic polyamide 12 (PA12) mandible model, we investigate how material properties and boundary conditions affect the FE model's accuracy using the design of experiments approach. Multiple FE parameters, such as contact definitions and the materials' elastic and plastic deformation characteristics, were systematically analyzed for an intact mandibular model and trans
