Experimental odontomas in osteopetrotic op/op rats.

Osteopetrosis is an autosomal recessive disease in several mammalian species. Osteopetrotic op/op rats suffer from complete failure of tooth eruption related to reduced bone resorption. In our earlier studies, op/op rats grafted with bone marrow cells 3 days after birth were cured of the disease and their molar eruption was restored. However, the incisors failed to erupt and their proliferating ends were distorted, forming odontomas. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the odontogenic tissues in the odontomas, using the correlated techniques of radiography and microradiograph

Lymphangitis carcinomatosa of the lungs. An unusual complication of oral cancer.

Lymphangitis carcinomatosa is a rare form of pulmonary metastasis. According to the literature only one case of oral cancer has previously been reported as the primary site. The diagnosis can be difficult to reach because the symptoms, as in this case, are often suggestive of heart failure or pneumonia.

Giant dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the mandible.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) is a rare and aggressive malignant soft-tissue tumour with a poor prognosis. This report describes a case of giant DDLPS in the oral cavity, arising in the mandible. A 65-year-old woman was referred to the authors' hospital with a mandibular swelling. A presumptive diagnosis of mandibular malignant tumour (DDLPS; T3N0M0, stage III) was made based on correlation of the clinicopathological features. Before radical surgery, a tracheostomy was performed, as there was narrowing of the pharyngeal cavity due to tumour growth. A bilateral supraomohyoid neck dissect

Clear cell variant of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (Pindborg tumour) of the mandible.

A calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumour of epithelial origin accounting for approximately 1% of all odontogenic tumours. The intraosseous form occurs more commonly in the posterior mandible whereas the extraosseous form is common in the anterior maxilla. CEOT is often asymptomatic and presents with a painless swelling of the mandible. Various histopathological variants of CEOT have been reported in the literature such as clear cell, Langerhans cell and CEOT with cementum-like areas with a 10-20% local recurrence. We report a case of a clear cell va

Unicystic ameloblastoma - A case series.

Ameloblastoma is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm that constitutes about 1-3% of the tumors of the jaw. Wide surgical excision with adequate safe margin is the most common treatment of choice. The study aimed to manage cases with unicystic ameloblastoma while preserving the continuity of the mandible (without resection). This article presents a series of cases ranging from 18 to 40 years old patients of both sexes with unicystic ameloblastoma, especially in the mandible showing more male predilection than female. All the cases presented in this article were treated by enucleation and cure

Osteoradionecrosis after postoperative radiotherapy for oral cavity cancer: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe late complication after radiotherapy but current knowledge on ORN risks in the setting of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) is limited. We studied the incidence and risk factors of ORN in patients with oral cavity cancers (OCC, treated with PORT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted including OCC patients (mainly squamous cell) treated with postoperative intensity modulated radiotherapy between 2010 and 2018 with > 1 year disease-free survival. Cumulative incidences of ORN were computed using the Kaplan Meier method.

Metastasis of prostate carcinoma in the mandible manifesting as numb chin syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Numb chin syndrome is an uncommon but well-recognized symptom in medical oncology. This condition can be related to metastatic neurological manifestation of malignancy, often with no clinically visible pathology. About 1% of oral cancers, which are located in the soft tissues and jaws, are metastases of primary tumors located elsewhere in the body. The posterior mandible is the most common site of metastasis of the oral region because of its rich blood supply in active areas of hematopoiesis. This article describes prostate carcinoma metastasis located in the mandible and temporoma

Recurrent odontogenic ghost cell carcinoma (OGCC) at a reconstructed fibular flap: a case report with immunohistochemical findings.

Odontogenic ghost cell carcinoma (OGCC), a malignant counterpart of the odontogenic ghost cell tumor (OGCT), with aggressive growth characteristics, is exceedingly rare. A painful swelling in the jaw with local paresthesia is the most common symptom. We described a case of 47-year Korean woman who had a rare central epithelial odontogenic ghost cell carcinoma which recurred at reconstructed fibular flap. Immunohistochemical differences between OGCT and OGCC analyzed using primary and recurred surgical specimen. On the basis of this case, the tumor started as an OGCT and transformed into OGCC w

Mandibular pain as the leading clinical symptom for metastatic disease: nine cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the jaws are a rare phenomenon. Nevertheless, the appearance of non-specific symptoms such as toothache can signal the onset of neoplastic disease in some patients. PATIENTS: In this article, we present details of a 74-year-old patient with a history of breast cancer to illustrate this point. Retrospectively, covering a time span of one year, we could identify nine patients (1.2%) with metastatic disease to the mandible out of a total of 763 patients referred to our Maxillofacial Surgery department with non-specific jaw pain. RESULTS: Four patients were subsequently

Central odontogenic fibroma, WHO type. A report of three cases with an unusual associated giant cell reaction.

Three cases of central odontogenic fibroma, WHO type, that exhibited a prominent giant cell granuloma-like histopathologic component are described in this report. All three lesions occurred in women, and all were located in the mandibular premolar-molar region. One lesion recurred after conservative excision, and the recurrence displayed the two histologically distinct tissues of the original lesion. The authors think that this pathologic process does not represent a "collision lesion" but, instead, is a unique presentation of a central odontogenic fibroma, WHO type.

Diagnostic imaging of tumor invasion of the mandible.

Several imaging techniques, such as conventional radiography, sonography, computed tomography, isotope scanning and magnetic resonance tomography are used for evaluation of malignant tumors in the region of the floor of the mouth and the tongue. At present, conventional radiography, as well as computed tomography and isotope scanning are the techniques preferred for examination of the mandible. In this study, the results of conventional radiographic examination, computed tomography, ultrasound and Tc scanning in detecting tumor invasion of the mandibular bone, are documented and correlated to

Optimizing outcomes in pediatric microvascular mandibular reconstruction: A 23-year institutional experience.

BACKGROUND: The vascularized free fibula flap (VFFF) is a well-established technique for addressing critical-sized mandibular defects, including those in pediatric patients. However, surgical risk factors and impact on growth potential are not well understood, particularly in skeletally immature patients, nor are the methods to optimize growth and outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed children who underwent mandibular reconstruction using VFFF between 2001 and 2024 at our institution. Complications were classified using the Clavien-Dindo scale. Data were analyzed using Pearson's r co

Strategic Muscle Coverage in Free Fibular Mandibular Reconstruction: An Osteotomy Approach to Minimize Plate Exposure, A Retrospective Analysis of 580 Consecutive Patients.

BACKGROUND: Free fibula flap reconstruction represents the gold standard for mandibular reconstruction following oncologic resection. However, plate exposure remains a significant complication, particularly in patients receiving postoperative radiotherapy. Traditional reconstructive approaches emphasize precise hardware contouring and basic soft tissue coverage but frequently fail to provide adequate muscle protection over hardware, especially in irradiated tissues. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of 580 consecutive free fibula flap reconstructions performed between 2018 and 2

Mandibular reconstruction using an iliac bone flap with perforator-supported external oblique abdominal muscle island: a pilot study.

The deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flap is one of the bone flaps commonly used for mandibular reconstruction. Observation of the skin paddle and Doppler ultrasound are methods that are usually used to monitor DCIA flaps after mandibular reconstruction surgery. The aim of this study was to introduce a novel DCIA flap with a perforator-supported external oblique abdominal muscle (EOAM) island for postoperative flap monitoring. This study included five patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction using this modified technique. The DCIA flap and the EOAM island supplied by the ascending b
