Can ultrasound be used to screen uterine malformations?

Eighty-nine patients were examined by ultrasound during the second phase of the menstrual cycle. The operators were not aware of the patients' history or results of previous ultrasonographic or radiologic investigations. The operators' aim was to diagnose uterine malformations graded as normal, suspected, or abnormal. Ultrasound identified 7 of 9 patients with a didelphic or complete septate uterus and 2 out of 3 with a bicornuate or partial septate uterus. Two other cases were suspected (one with a unicornuate, the other with a didelphic uterus). One false-positive case occurred, and 10 patie

Phenylketonuria. Experience at one center in the first year of screening in California.

One year's experience with phenylketonuria during the calendar year 1966, the first year for compulsory newborn screening in California, was reviewed. The over-all prevalence rate from reported cases in California during this period was one case per 19,500 persons tested. Fifty-seven persons suspected of having pku were evaluated, and 25 of them were determined to be phenylketonuric. Eleven of the 25 were infants in whom the abnormality was detected through the newborn screening program or because it was detected in a sibling through a screening program. All the newborn phenylketonuric patient

Overview of BMI and Other Ways of Measuring and Screening for Obesity in Pediatric Patients.

Despite a long history of advances in measuring body size and composition, body mass index (BMI) has remained the most commonly used clinical measure. We explore the advantages and disadvantages of using BMI and other measures to estimate adipose tissue, recognizing that no measure of body size or adiposity has fulfilled the goal of differentiating health from disease. BMI and waist circumference remain widely-used clinical screening measures for appropriate risk stratification as it relates to obesity.

Acceptability of childhood screening: a systematic narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: A systematic narrative literature review was undertaken to assess the acceptability of childhood screening interventions to identify factors to consider when planning or modifying childhood screening programs to maximize participation and uptake. STUDY DESIGN: This is a systematic narrative literature review. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO via Ovid, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library) to identify primary research studies that assessed screening acceptability. Studies were categorized using an existing theoretical framework of acceptability consis

Biofilm Formation and Quantification Using the 96-Microtiter Plate.

Biofilm formation in microtiter plates is certainly the most commonly used method to grow and study biofilm. This simple design is very popular due to its high-throughput screening capacities, low cost, and easy handling. In the protocol described here, we focus on the use of 96-well optically clear, polystyrene flat-bottom plate to study biofilm formation by Leptospira spp. and quantify the biofilm formation by crystal violet (CV) staining. We also describe an alternative method, based on phase contrast image analysis that we believe is more suitable for accurately quantifying biofilm growth

Feasibility of an Online, Interactive Body Mass Index Parental Notification Letter (e-BMI).

School-based body mass index (BMI) screening is required in 50% of states with parent notification letters distributed among 11 of those states. Additional research is needed to effectively communicate screening results to parents. We conducted a pilot investigation of parent acceptability of an electronic, interactive BMI parental notification letter (e-BMI) along with the feasibility of implementing an e-BMI letter in the school setting. In addition, we assessed parental attitudes and practices regarding their child's weight-related behaviors. Electronic letter distribution and parent receip

Single-Breath-Count Test: an important adjunct in the triaging of patients in a mass-casualty incident due to botulism.

Clostridium botulinum toxins, the most poisonous substance known to humankind, are considered to be a [US] Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Category A bioterrorist agent. Despite this concern, little has been published with regard to the tactical aspects of triaging a mass-casualty event involving botulism victims arriving at an emergency department. Because neuromuscular-ventilatory failure is a principal reason for botulism's early morbidity and mortality, using a quick and sensitive test to evaluate this possibility is imperative. The purpose of this article is to propose the adop

Laboratory challenges in primary aldosteronism screening and diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The laboratory has a critical role to play in the screening and diagnosis of primary aldosteronism. This review highlights some of the important analytical considerations and the new developments in the determination of aldosterone and renin. METHODS: The review considered the published literature and clinical practice guidelines in the area of primary aldosteronism. RESULTS: A brief introduction to primary aldosteronism is provided. A detailed description of the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical considerations for the laboratory determination of aldost

Instruments and scales for assessment, screening, and psychoeducational diagnosis of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate instruments and scales for psychoeducational assessment, screening, and diagnosis of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. DATA SOURCE: This review followed the methodological procedures recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses - Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Its research question was, "What are the main instruments and scales for psychoeducational assessment, screening, and diagnosis of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder in school?". Cardiac screening in the young for the detection of cardiovascular disease and prevention of sudden cardiac death.

Sudden cardiac death in the young is often due to silent inherited cardiac conditions. Although evidence increasingly supports cardiac screening as a preventative strategy, policies and frameworks differ globally. Structured screening frameworks that utilise AI-enabled technologies show great potential for enhancing disease detection and risk prediction.
