Immediate Implant Placement in Conjunction with Maxillary Sinus Lifting and Grafting.

Bone deficiency in the posterior maxillary bone can be associated with a large sinus cavity and this dilemma can limit implant placement for dental rehabilitation in this area. The maxillary sinus lifting technique can be the solution for many clinical situations with minimal bone height, allowing the placement of longer implants. Autogenous bone graft is a safe and reliable material for reconstructive surgery. In this article, a case of an elderly male patient with inadequate maxillary bone height is presented. Simultaneous maxillary sinus elevation and implant placement with autogenous parie…

How to avoid intraoperative and postoperative complications in maxillary sinus elevation.

Maxillary sinus floor elevation, via the lateral approach, is one of the most predictable bone augmentation procedures performed in implant dentistry. but both intra- and postoperative complications can occur, and some of them are severe. Our aim is as follows: To review the pertinent literature on the topic, especially assessing the risk factors related to complications. To give clinical recommendations to minimize intra- and postoperative complications with the ultimate scope of improving the standard of clinical care and patient safety.

Assessment of maxillary sinus fluid volume for postmortem diagnosis of drowning.

INTRODUCTION: Drowning is a comprehensive and exclusive diagnosis at autopsy. Autopsy findings such as pleural effusion and waterlogged lungs contribute to the diagnosis. Herein, we aim to reveal the practical usefulness and postmortem changes of the maxillary sinus fluid volume to diagnose drowning. METHODS: We evaluated 52 drowning and 59 nondrowning cases. The maxillary sinus fluid volume was measured using a computed tomography (CT) scan, and pleural effusion volume and lung weight were manually measured at autopsy. The utility of these three indices for diagnosing drowning and its postmo…

Mucocele in the maxillary sinus involving the orbit: A report of 2 cases.

Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is a benign, slow-growing, expansile lesion. Maxillary sinus mucoceles are usually associated with painless bulging of the cheek; however, orbital expansion is rarely observed. Maxillary sinus mucoceles can be classified as primary or secondary according to their etiology. An impediment to sinus ostium ventilation is thought to be the cause of primary mucocele, while sequestering of residual mucosa after surgery in the wound and long-term retention of tissue fluid have been suggested to lead to the formation of secondary mucocele. This report presents 2 cases …

Coexistent Actinomycosis and Fungus Ball in the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report.

Actinomycosis is rarely accompanied by fungus balls. It is difficult to distinguish between actinomycosis and a fungus ball due to their similar clinical and computed tomography scan results. Thus, a meticulous histopathological examination is required for definite diagnosis. We report a case of actinomycosis accompanied by a fungus ball, found incidentally in a patient without rhinologic symptoms. The patient was successfully treated with endoscopic sinus surgery, followed by short-term antibiotic therapy. We suggest that shortterm antibiotic therapy may be more appropriate than long-term ant

Prevalence of and factors associated with maxillary sinus cyst in a Chinese population.

PURPOSE: This study used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to assess the prevalence of and factors associated with maxillary sinus cysts (MSCs) in a Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 2,571 CBCT scans of 5,000 sinuses were analyzed. MSCs were diagnosed on the basis of imaging features within the maxillary sinus. Sex, age, dental condition, and anatomic condition were assessed. Associations with these factors were evaluated with logistic regression and a generalized estimating equations model. RESULTS: The prevalence of MSCs was 15.46% at the sinus level and 23.44% at the patient leve…

Ghost image of an ectopic tooth in maxillary sinus: A diagnostic challenge.

Ghost images are artefacts of anatomical structures or foreign objects that oral and maxillofacial surgeons should take into consideration to prevent misdiagnosis and mistreatment. A 38-year-old male patient referred to our clinic for dental implant treatment. Orthopantomograph (OPG) revealed an impacted distomolar at the apex of maxillary right third molar and an ectopic supernumerary tooth in the left maxillary sinus. Despite the ectopic supernumerary tooth appearance on OPG, cone beam computed tomography images revealed that there was not a supernumerary tooth in the left maxillary sinus. N…

Proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma in the maxillary sinus: an unusual presentation.

Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is a rare histological type of soft tissue sarcoma presenting as a subcutaneous or deep dermal mass in the distal extremities of young adults. Recently, a more aggressive, so called 'proximal-type' ES has been described. The literature is limited on the clinical features and management of ES originating in the head and neck area. We here report a case of 16-year-old female who initially presented with progressive swelling and pain in the left cheek. On physical and radiographic examination, a malignant neoplasm was found in the left maxillary sinus with bony invasion. …

Direct approach to the anterior and lateral part of the maxillary sinus with an endoscope.

OBJECTIVE: The Caldwell-Luc (CL) approach with a sublabial incision is used to manipulate the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus. Paresthesia is one of the major complications associated with the CL approach. We developed a new method, "direct approach to the anterior and lateral part of the maxillary sinus with an endoscope" (DALMA), that negates the need for a sublabial incision and minimizes dental paresthesia by reducing the risk of anterior superior alveolar nerve injury. This study aimed to describe how to perform the DALMA technique, and to review its effectiveness and associated comp…

Removal of the Residual Roots Displaced Into the Maxillary Sinus via Endoscopy.

Minimally invasive endoscopic surgery has been developed for various indications in the craniomaxillofacial area. The case report presented in this article is focused on the possibility of removing the residual roots displaced into the maxillary sinus by means of an endoscopic technique. When planning endoscopic surgery to access the residual roots displaced in the maxillary sinus, we performed 2 different approaches into the maxillary sinus, a transnasal approach through the middle or inferior turbinate and transoral approach via the anterior maxillary sinus wall. The endoscopic surgical appr…

Sinusitis Due to the Presence of a Dental Implant Inside the Maxillary Sinus.

The migration of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon event of occurrence. Disrespect for concepts of implantology, low alveolar bone density at the site, high incidence of masticatory force in posterior region, and clinical intercurrences predispose to failure in rehabilitation.
