CT features in second cancers of the maxillary sinus.

Five patients with a second maxillary cancer (squamous cell carcinoma), which developed 6 to 17 years after initial treatment for the first cancer on the opposite side, were compared with 21 control cases with a primary cancer on the basis of computed tomography (CT) findings. Generally, the second cancer was found at an earlier stage. The specific CT findings of early sinus carcinoma were uneven soft tissue distribution in the antrum and tumor permeation with bone fragments remaining at the original tumor site. These findings may be helpful for distinguishing this cancer from benign chronic s

Therapeutic efficacy of intra-arterial docetaxel and nedaplatin infusion concomitant with radiotherapy for T4 maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy with docetaxel and nedaplatin for T4 maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma (MSSCC). Data were retrospectively analysed for 22 consecutive patients with T4 MSSCC who underwent intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy. Participants received intensity-modulated radiotherapy (70 Gy in 35 fractions) concomitantly with docetaxel (60 mg/m2) and nedaplatin (80 mg/m2) administered every 4 weeks for a total of three sessions. The median follow-up period was 49 months (range 12-91 months). T4a tumours were found in 16 patien

Maxillary cementoblastoma--a rarity.

BACKGROUND: This paper highlights the unusual and rare presentation of a cementoblastoma in the maxilla. It also discusses a review on this odontogenic pathology. CASE REPORT: We present a cementoblastoma appearing in an atypical site in a young girl. The presenting clinical features with radiologic features are reviewed. Also discussed is an approach to radiological interpretation. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the seventeenth case to be reported in literature. DISCUSSION: Cementoblastoma is a benign true neoplasm which forms a mass of cementum or cementum-like tissue on the ro

[Anterior cranio-facial resection for malignant tumors: report of 91 cases].

Between 1987 and 1994 we performed 103 anterior cranio-facial resections in patients affected by tumors involving the ethmoid, the nasal cavities and, sometimes, the orbit, the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. The cibriform plate was always involved. The tumor invaded the frontal dura in 20 patients without intradural neoplastic vegetations. These were present in 6 cases. Ninety-one of these patients had a malignant tumor; from the histologic point of view we had 50 adenocarcinomas, 16 epidermoid carcinomas, 8 estesioneuroblastomas, 6 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 5 melanomas and 6 infrequent type

Epidemiologic patterns of frontal and maxillary sinus cancer.

A significant disease in mortality rates for maxillary and frontal sinus cancer was found for older females, particularly in urban areas of New York State, over a 30-year period. A similar observation was made for males residing in rural areas. The decline in female rates might be related to the discontinued use of carcinogenic agents such as Thorotrast, whereas that in males might be related to changes in those industries associated with an increased risk for these cancer sites.

[Clinical analysis of trigeminal neuropathy as initial manifestations--an etiological study].

The differential diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy is quite challenging because there is a significant variety of causes for the disorder. We reviewed our cases of trigeminal neuropathy by studying first the initial manifestations in order to evaluate their underlying disorders. Sixty-four patients with trigeminal neuropathy came to our Out-Patients clinic. We have excluded from our analysis any patients with atypical pain, facial migraine, nasal sinusitis, pain from inflammation of dental pulp or facial bones, and pretrigeminal neuralgia. In 53 cases (83%) we identified the causes; 35 of the

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the sinonasal region. A propose of a case.

We describe a 70-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis and pulmonary fibrosis who presented with a month's history of pain in the left lateronasal region and inferior eyelid. On examination there was left exophthalmos, difficulty in coordinating eye movements, inflammation, erythema, and pain. Computed tomography showed a 3 cm mass in the left posterior ethmoid region, a biopsy specimen from which showed a small cell neuroendocrine tumour. He refused operation and was treated unsuccessfully with four cycles of cisplatin and etoposide.

Endoscopic surgery of a sinonasal inverted papilloma: Surgical strategy, follow-up, and recurrence rate.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) is noted for its high rate of recurrence and malignant transformation. Although many clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the endoscopic approach for SNIP, the surgical strategy has been the subject of much debate. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the endoscopic endonasal approach in SNIP. METHODS: A systematic review of patients with a diagnosis of SNIP and who had surgery at our institution from June 2005 to March 2013 was performed. All the patients who had postoperative follow-up for >2 years were enrolled. Eac

High-risk HPV Does not Appear to be an Important Risk Factor for Sinonasal Carcinomas in Turkish Population: A Tertiary Center Experience.

Background. The sinonasal tract is the second most common site of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related carcinomas in the head and neck. Published data on the association between sinonasal tumors and HPV are quite inconsistent among different regions. Material and methods. We performed high-risk HPV DNA in situ hybridization (ISH) and p16 immunohistochemistry on sinonasal carcinomas diagnosed between 2006 and 2016. Results. Of 105 sinonasal carcinomas, we found only two (2%) HPV-positive cases; both had non-keratinizing morphology and were diffusely positive for p16. By histologic type, HPV DNA p

SWI/SNF-deficient head and neck neoplasms: An overview.

With wide-spread use of next generation sequencing tools in surgical pathology, a variety of neoplasms have been increasingly recognized to be associated with specific recurrent defining genetic abnormalities. This has led to recognition of new genetically defined entities and refinements of preexisting heterogeneous neoplastic categories. Among these, neoplasms associated with inactivating mutations involving different subunits of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex have received special attention. In the head and neck area, SMARCB1 (INI1) and SMARCA4 (BRG1) are the main two SWI/SNF comp

Salvage surgery improves the treatment outcome of patients with residual/recurrent maxillary sinus cancer after superselective intra-arterial cisplatin infusion with concomitant radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: We have performed superselective intra-arterial cisplatin infusion with concomitant radiotherapy (RADPLAT) for patients with maxillary sinus cancer. The promising treatment outcomes of this non-surgical treatment were reported in past studies. However, few clinical studies have been conducted to evaluate the outcome of salvage surgery following RADPLAT. The purpose of this study was to analyze the treatment outcomes of salvage surgery for patients with recurrent maxillary sinus cancer after RADPLAT. METHODS: We assessed 45 patients who had recurrence following RADPLAT between 1999 an

Efficacy of the Endoscopic Triportal Transmaxillary Approach for Treating Lateral Middle Skull Base Tumors: A Technical Note and Retrospective Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The endoscopic approach, chiefly via the maxillary sinus, has growing applications for the lateral skull base, and can be classified into the use of "endonasal" or "sublabial" entry. Although the endonasal transmaxillary approach has been well accepted, it has a limitation with respect to the lateral exposure. A possible solution is the use of the sublabial transmaxillary approach via the canine fossa, which assures lateral accessibility. In clinical practice, we have taken advantage of the concomitant use of the endonasal and sublabial transmaxillary approach for selected patients

Medical therapy of maxillary sinus inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) in the maxillary sinus is a diagnostic challenge. As IMT has various names, it has various findings in magnetic resonance image. Although destructive pattern in computed tomography and hypermetabolism in PET CT suggest malignancy, it is debatable whether it is a tumor or inflammatory lesion. Treatment of IMT usually includes surgery. However, IMT can be dealt with medical treatment according to histologic type and localization. We report a rare case of IMT in the maxillary sinus which is controlled by medical therapy.

En bloc resection of the primary tumour and cervical lymph nodes through the parapharyngeal space in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the maxilla: a preliminary study.

We retrospectively studied 72 patients with maxillary carcinoma (48 of the gingiva, 22 of the antrum, and one each of the hard palate and maxillary bone). The 5-year survival was 73% for those with gingival carcinoma, and 45% for those with antral carcinoma. Nine patients died of local recurrence, three of cervical metastases, six of distant metastases, and five died of metastases in lateral retropharyngeal nodes despite successful control of local and regional disease. We have recently done en bloc resections of the maxilla and cervical lymph nodes through the parapharyngeal space for patient
