Non-epithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx: a clinicopathologyic study. VIII. Adipose tissue tumors (lipoma and liposarcoma).

In a study of 256 non-epithelial neoplasms involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, only two lesions were classified as adipose tissue tumors (one lipoma and one liposarcoma). The lipoma was found incidentally when tissue removed from the maxillary sinus was studied histologically, the patient having been treated with a Caldwell-Luc procedure for maxillary sinusitis. The liposarcoma produced a large mass involving the nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid area, hard palate and maxillary, temporal and sphenoid bones. The tumor extended into the cranial cavity and eventual…

[The endoscopy of paranasal sinuses. Diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities (author's transl)].

This paper deals with further experiences in endoscopy of the maxillary sinus and in possibilities of endoscopy of frontal and sphenoidal sinuses. Some coloured photographs taken during endoscopy are shown. As the result of 301 sinuscopies of maxillary sinus performed, it could be shown that in 36% of the cases x-ray findings didn't exactly correspond with the endoscopy findings. In further 22% there was no correlation at all between the x-rays and findings at operation. This shows the great importance of sinuscopy and reveals its diagnostic values. The author used the endoscopy of the maxilla

Micro and nanoparticle deposition in human nasal passage pre and post virtual maxillary sinus endoscopic surgery.

Realistic 3-D models of the human nasal passages were developed pre and post virtual uncinectomy and Middle Meatal Antrostomy. A 3-D computational domain was constructed by a series of coronal CT scan images from a healthy subject. Then a virtual uncinectomy intervention and maxillary antrostomy were performed on the left nasal passage by removing the uncinate process and exposing the maxillary sinus antrum. For several breathing rates corresponding to low or moderate activities, the airflows in the nasal passages were simulated numerically pre and post virtual routine maxillary sinus endoscop

First-line management of sinusitis: a national problem? Overview.

Traditional concepts of sinus disease as primarily involving the maxillary sinuses are giving way to understanding of the primary involvement of the ostiomeatal complex. Recognition of predisposing factors is also improving, as is localization of disease in the ethmoid, maxillary, frontal, and sphenoid sinuses. Because of the interdependence of the sinuses, acute sinusitis is rarely limited to one sinus. The diagnosis of acute disease is relatively easy compared with that of chronic sinusitis, which mimics many other conditions. Antibiotics and decongestants typically constitute initial therap

Three-dimensional linear and volumetric analysis of maxillary sinus pneumatization.

Considering the anatomical variability related to the maxillary sinus, its intimate relation to the maxillary posterior teeth and because of all the implications that pneumatization may possess, three-dimensional assessment of maxillary sinus pneumatization is of most usefulness. The aim of this study is to analyze the maxillary sinus dimensions both linearly and volumetrically using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to assess the maxillary sinus pneumatization. Retrospective analysis of 30 maxillary sinuses belonging to 15 patients' CBCT scans was performed. Linear and volumetric measureme

Progressive swelling and radiopaque mass in maxillary sinus: formation of stone.

Although radiopaque lesions located in the maxillary sinus are rare, differential diagnosis should include a number of pathologies. Formation of stone, namely "antrolith" in the paranasal sinuses is a very rare phenomenon and it should be considered in the differential diagnosis, as it is usually located in the maxillary sinus. In this article, we present a 47-year-old male case with unilateral chronic sinusitis for a long time and calcification in maxillary sinus in the light of clinical/radiographic findings of the lesion and treatment strategy.

The use of maxillary sinus dimensions in gender determination: a thin-slice multidetector computed tomography assisted morphometric study.

Gender determination is an important step in identification. For gender determination, anthropometric evaluation is one of the main forensic evaluations. In the present study, morphometric analysis of maxillary sinuses was performed to determine gender. For morphometric analysis, coronal and axial paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) scan with 1-mm slice thickness was used. For this study, 140 subjects (70 women and 70 men) were enrolled (age ranged between 18 and 63). The size of each subject's maxillary sinuses was measured in anteroposterior, transverse, cephalocaudal, and volume direct

Detection of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the nasal cavities and evaluation of sinus disorders in patients undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Orthognathic surgery can lead to sinus alterations, including sinusitis, attributed to the exposure of maxillary sinuses during Le Fort I osteotomy. Furthermore, being a hospital-based procedure, there is potential risk of complications arising from bacteria prevalent in such environments. This study evaluated maxillary sinusitis occurrence and the presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the nasal cavity before and after orthognathic surgery. METHODS: Ten patients with dentofacial deformities underwent Le Fort I osteotomy. Clinical evaluations using SNOT-22 questionnaire wer…

[Modern endosurgical technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of maxillary inflammations and tumors (part 2)].

A total of 102 patients with inflammatory diseases and tumors of the maxillary sinuses were examined and treated using endosurgical technologies. X-Ray computer-aided tomography and magnetic imaging helped determine the access to the maxillary sinus, and the endosurgical instrument was inserted through the anterior wall of the sinus, medial wall, and maxillary tuberosity. Endosurgery was the most effective in polypous sinusitis, mucocele, inverted papilloma, and for biopsy. Endosurgical technologies allow a full-scale surgical intervention with the least invasion.

[The diagnostic reliability of the occipitomental radiograph of the paranasal sinuses. Correlation with magnetic resonance tomography].

100 conventional occipitomental radiographs of the paranasal sinuses were studied independently by five radiologists. Predictive values were determined, based on MRI as the gold standard. Sensitivity and specificity for detection of mucosal thickening in the sinuses were: maxillary sinus: 0.73/0.76, frontal sinus: 0.20/0.85, ethmoid sinus: 0.38/0.87, sphenoid sinus: 0.14/0.96. In the maxillary sinus polypoid thickening was demonstrated with a significantly higher sensitivity than that of diffuse mucosal thickening (0.82 versus 0.65, Chi-square-test, p less than 0.01). Because of the low predic

Roentgen examination of maxillary sinus, antral puncture and irrigation--a comparative study.

The various radiological findings of maxillary sinus were compared to those at antral puncture and irrigation in patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis. It was noted that roentgen findings of opacity and fluid level of the maxillary sinus are definite evidences of sinus infection and a mucosal thickening is not an indication of sinus infection.
