The success of measles eradication depends upon a laboratory network to rapidly analyze samples obtained as part of surveillance and case investigation. The Pan American Measles Laboratory Network was established in 1995. A measles outbreak occurred in Dhankutta town in year 2056 Falgun to 2057 Baishak (3 months). A total of 130 cases were registered at the Dhankutta District Hospital. A large proportion of the cases had severe disease with complications and were admitted at the hospital. None of the patients registered at the hospital died. Interestingly, 50.0% of cases were in higher age group (10 years and above) which is an unusual trend in developing countries. All the cases gave history of measles vaccination, which points towards the need for investigation of vaccine efficacy and cold chain efficiency.

A serosurvey for measles, mumps and rubella was conducted in Italy; incidence based on statutory notifications over the last three decades was also calculated. In Italy the diseases followed an endemic-epidemic pattern, with an incidence peak every 2-4 years, and had a limited reduction of incidence attributable to childhood immunization. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and subacute measles encephalitis (SME) are both rare complications of measles virus infection. We analyzed the clinical course of eight patients with liver dysfunction in measles. All of the patients showed an elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), but no jaundice. These levels returned to normal about 3 weeks after the onset of the rash. A percutaneous liver biopsy was done in two cases. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical features of measles-associated pneumonia (MAP) and to identify other pathogens involved.

We reported a patient with measles encephaloneuropathy. A 26-year-old woman in her 15th week of gestation became febrile and developed cutaneous eruption typical of measles on July 1 1997. Five days after appearance of the rash, fetal death was identified and the fetus was removed. Following the operation, she became comatous. As many as 617 patients with measles were examined. Of these, 306 subjects presented with a complicated form of the condition. A way is suggested for the prognostication of complications, relying on clinical factors and on a method for non-uniform sequential statistical procedure. In 1990 the Institute for Medical Research carried out a serosurvey in the state of Kelantan to study the age stratified immune prevalence rates for measles and poliomyelitis. Our findings indicate that 981 out of 1,097 (89%) of the population screened had measles antibodies and more than 90% (366 out of 400) had antibodies to all three serotypes of poliovirus.
